The Federal Government has announced abolishment of the policy of preference for catchment areas in admitting new students in Federal Universities.

President Mohammadu Buhari announced this yesterday at the 45th convocation ceremony of the University of Benin in Benin City.

The President who was represented by the Deputy Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), Suleiman Yusuf, therefore, directed all federal universities to ensure that every local government, all states, and all geopolitical zones are represented in their admission of the new entrance.

President Buhari warned that any institution found to go against the directive would be sanctioned, adding that he has directed the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the Nigeria Universities Commission to ensure compliance commencing from the 2020 admission season.

President Buhari said the NUC and JAMB have been directed to thereafter carry out a comprehensive student audits to ascertain compliance.

”If you look at the demographics of the various Nigerian universities, it reveals a preponderance of over localisation and over indigenization with only a few universities including those owned by the federal government having a semblance of national institutions in terms of the national spread of their staff and students population.

“Universities should be more broad-minded, less parochial and eschew over indigenization.

“Government expects university managers to do a lot more with less, given the economic reality confronting us as a nation today. This calls for innovative and transparent management practices.

“Funding is not just about the quantum of fund disbursed to universities, it also includes the judicious management of available funds to ensure that we get more mileage on whatever funds are expended”, he said.

Finally ......UNN has been the only school I knew off that it was easier for a Yoruba man , northerner or south south to get admission than an Igbo man

Had a friend from Edo who entered economics with 218 average ....why someone from IMO n anambra can't even get with 260

My Gombe neighbor got pharmacy with 235 while I know people from Igbo who got 270 n didn't get

If you are from bayelsa 260 can get u medicine but if you are from Igbo ...305 might not get you in

Felt it was messed up ...because unilag ,UI and OAU won't give Igbo's that treatment ,same with ABU or uni port

UNN model is the model all schools should follow

45% national merit ,40% state merits , 10%( staff kids, host community ,special case ) 5% ( well man know man

cool After how many decades of evil policy which had denied many the rights to University Education? We are good in allowing any crisis to become a tragedy before doing anything. You are free to play politics and tribalism with other things, but not education. That IBB guy...hmmm, that former rural dictator still addressed by many as a former president happened to have been the Demon sent to destroy such a beautiful Nation.

It took too long, but better late than never. I hope it's not just a talk-the-talk policy.

For high scores in IELTS, send a mail to editus dot ng at gmail dot com, if you are in Lagos. A competent private tutor will respond immediately. Don't take that exam more than once.

Catchment area has not helped the growth of Nigeria high institutions, the locals turn it into a village Market square where anything goes.,
The employ mostly lecturers and non academic staff from their community, make so much money from admission racketeering from non locals.

The local lecturers don't bring much value to scholarship because they see themselves as protected, you threaten to sanction them and they rush to the traditional rulers for intervention, I see this in my school.

Quality brains are prevented from coming to federal institutions because of this useless policy meant to bridge the education gap between the North and South since independence which has failed.
This is a good development, so when will the abolish Educationally Disadvantaged States policy which discourages competition and makes students lazy as they get admitted with the least qualifications

what they should have abolished is the educationally disadvantaged states that Abokis use in getting unfair advantage in university admissions, somebody from Anambra with a score of 250 in Jamb would be denied admissions into Unizik and Unn while an Aboki with 220 would be given admission. hopeless country with a hopeless university system that doesn't promote merit.

There is still quota system joor, why can't we have like 80% merit, 20% educationally less developed states.
Why must all states and LGA be represented?
