you can consider taking it up - since the action of the officers contravenes what their superiors have said in the media
unfortunately, you do not have a video, so they will almost definitely lie

good luck

You are welcome my dear....for speaking the truth.

@OP I am sure you now understand your offense.

Why not pull over and go through your map, rather than do that while on motion.

Think!

If u must consult a map, pls do so when the vehicle is not in motion. Don't endanger other road users because u wanna find directions.

Truth be told, the lady is 100% wrong and they are 100% right. I am assuming she was using google maps while driving otherwise they wouldn't have stopped her.

A lot of things can happen on the road in that split second one is staring at the map on his/her phone. The proper procedure is to pull in at a rest area, a petrol station or any other safe parking spot, memorise your route including landmarks, then move. Hanging a phone on the dashboard and driving while googling is very distracting. Later when they hit someone's child; like someone hit mine; they will be begging up and down and crying false tears. Using a phone while driving is dangerous.

I know that selfishness is ruling us here but we should try our best to consider other road users' safety even if we are not concerned about ours.

Technology is meant to make our lives better not worse.

It might not have been Google Maps that was the problem, it must have been you using your phone while driving.
Don't lie to get sympathy from silly miscreants like yourself.

Concentrate on the road next time with your two hands on the steering or pull aside and park safely to use Google Maps because you're not the only motorist in motion. The law is: no calling, no texting, no browsing (Google Maps included) while driving. Why go about spreading acrimony?

You wanna endanger the lives of other struggling Nigerians because you're more civilized than FRSC? Bunch of lawless kids forming victims upandan.

I don't think it is just the use of GPS that is your offence but the use of GPS while at the same time driving. I think it is possible to stop for a moment, make use of it for direction before you continue with your journey.

The use of mobile phone in any form while driving is not allowed in Nigeria.

At the risk of sounding like one of them, I have to agree I consider the use of GPS a distraction (more about the way we use it). So many times I have entered cabs and the driver would stare at his phone for seconds to get the route. I get really uncomfortable in those few seconds. Few times they look up and make sharp swerves.

However, I do not think the problem should be the use of GPS in its entirety. The problem should be the use of handheld devices and its resultant inattentive driving. I would prefer a situation where it can be set before driving and on speaker too. This is a better option, since so many persons would rather not hang their phones.

They issued a statement to this effect recently. You can look it up, juxtapose it with your situation and know if your case can be appealed.

Seizing your car is going too far though, your DL is enough.

Your statement clearly captures a sound view on GPS usage. Unfortunately, we live in a country where fire brigade approach is often use to tackle problem.

Since the ban of Google map, I disturb road regulatory agencies alot on the best/fastest route I can take to get on to my destination or they describe how I can get to an exact location. Their answers have always been Oga just take straight, u go reach there.

The government gave a primitive measure to address this. It shows the kind of illiterate and ignorant people that are at the corridor of power.

Of course, impound car and seize license for using google maps, that's the level of madness you can expect from the Federal Road Stupidity Crooks. Where the rest of the world are already moving to driverless cars using GPS to navigate, these crooks want to oppress people for using GPS maps. Because GPS maps have been helping people to avoid one ways and wrong turns, so bribe collection for such offenses have reduced, they are very angry and frustrated grin

I think her story is half truth. Looking and checking out roads on a google map while you are actually driving is very dangerous. This poses a danger to yourself and to other road users and structures around.

It is okay to pull over and park properly and study your map before moving on. No one will quarrel with you for listening to gps instructions as you drive , but looking at a map as you drive could be due to a mental health problem and I support the referral for a mental health examination.

We like to sensationalize things! If the phone was placed on an holder, you won't be arrested. The offense here isnt the use of google map but clearly her use of her mobile phone.

and the same frsc would turn a blind eye to crazy danfo drivers and taxi men who load their cars beyond the loading limit whilst driving on our roads...the same road safety would not bother if dangote trucks crush the hell out of all of us as a result of codeine drinking drivers..

I am tired of this country called nigeria under buhari..its almost like all the agencies have gone mad...

Abuja is very different. This may happen in lagos and no FRSC official will care. but things work in Abuja - to a very large extent.

She was probably holding the phone in her hand while driving. She should have set her location then put her phone on a phone holder. Simple.

OP get a phone holder next time.
Even Keke riders use them here
Holding your phone and checking google maps while driving is a very big risk. It'll take a split second and bam, you know the rest..
Make we do things well.

You want to check out because you were arrested for driving with Google maps. Okay. When you get to the other side, you will know that a lot of the things you do here excluding driving with google maps, is actually traffic offenses that we take for granted here - I wonder what other country you would port to, then.

My car comes with a GPS navigator much like Google map. Should it be illegal to drive my car,?

If maps are danger to road users why did auto manufacturers put it.?

Sounds crazy, but the FRSC guys are 100% correct grin grin GPS is very distracting.

1. From her statement, she didn't deny when they asked whether she was using her GPS.
2. Next time, get a phone holder. Nobody can accuse u then.
3. They didn't ask for bribe, they told her to pay into a government account.

Bro please stop talking like this most cars manufactured today come with screen, which maps can be uploaded on to get directions it's a standard.

Secondly Google maps is equipped with voice prompt telling yo to move left or right or you have reached your destination.

We need to stop creating policies that don't make sense in this country, you will be surprised that the man that made this policy has never used the technology so he can't attest to it's benefits, this same man will rather constitute a nuisance on the road asking for directions.

Major businesses in the world have been created using this technology, are we saying the ministry of transport in the countries these businesses operate in are lacking on the intellect of safety? We can't continue to have half baked leaders overseeing key sectors of our economy.

Let me predict what will happen in the next few months, they will go after Uber and taxify, then the management of the companies will complain, after which they will be given special concession, then when road safety stop a vehicle they will ask are you uber, if so you are free, if not you are to be fined.
