Then ask questions, don't assume and conclude. It is easier to make none. Stay on your lane and everyone would be fine. smiley

To start with.... you are not supposed to hand over your phone to them.

What kind of madness is this? In the UK for instance, driving with Google maps has even been incorporated into the learning process; you will be taught and even examined on the use of Google maps for navigation before you can get a license.

Just look at my country?!

Modified:
Just found out the actual rule from FRSC is that drivers should not touch their phones while driving (even if it's for google maps navigation).

This is standard practice and law all over the developed world. If you must use GPS navigation on your phone, have the destination set and hang the phone before you set off; manipulating your phone while driving is an offence anywhere.
that's why you should read first before rushing to comment.

@OP I feel your plight and the punishment meted to you is too harsh.

Nevertheless the FRSC is right when they said drivers should desist from using google map especially when the said driver is holding the phone.

You can buy a car phone hanger and stick your phone to that to save yourself of the embarrassment from the Road Safety officials coz there are far too many accidents caused by people holding phones while driving.

Even in some states in USA, holding a phone either for google map or any other thing is an offense and the police will pull you up if they see you with that.

We Nigerians always want a better nation but we most times don’t obey simple rule of law.

Note: I assume you held the phone in your hand while using the google map
They are right because that alone can cause distraction which may lead to an accident

If u don't know how sat navigator works, ask...
Rather than display your ignorance here...

I know how it works. I use it all the time. If I am not using the voice prompt, I always have the decency to pull over and check my positioning and how long I have to get to the next turn off. Yes it delays me somewhat, and yes, it is inconvenient, but it is a smaller inconvenience than a parent having to carry his broken child to a hospital because I don't want to spend an extra 5 minutes getting to my destination.

Yes he is thank you. He broke his legs in the incident, but was operated on and is walking normally now. The driver was using a phone while driving and she ran into him while he was standing by the road side. I don't know whether she was on google maps or texting or calling. I did not ask.

Wow! We still have a lot of surprises in this yulitide. Men of the Federal Road Safety Corps have just impounded my car. Asked what's my offence, they said, show me your phone and I turned my phone to him, and the guy said you are under arrest for driving with the aid of Google map on your mobile phones. Wawu!! I'm like seriously!! He said, madam it is a serious traffic offence. I asked to see the team lead, their team lead came and after hearing fro his collegue and me said, "the law forbids motorists from using mobile phones in any form while driving, as it can lead to accident". I can see you are using Google map on your phone. Madam it is distractive so follow us to our office.

This is unbelievable!! You see ba, I have an emergency and have requested for a ticket so I can deal with this later but they said No. I must drive to their office. Well ladies and gentlemen, I've been given a ticket of N4000 payable to Remita my offence is using GPS. They have my car and my keys and my drivers license. When I'm done paying to remita then I will be checked into national hospital for mental examination for using GPS while driving. The real mad folks are those who believe is an offence to drive with Google map. They called Google map a distraction. So if you are driving in Abuja, ditch the GPS and drive on, get to middle of the road stop and ask any road safety or traffic warder thus; oga where is the direction to Apo, Asokoro or just any where you are going. You don't need direction map. The worst kind of illiteracy is the illiteracy of a government.

Please if you have an opportunity to live in a saner place , now is the time to weigh your options and check out. A lot of things don't make sense here.
This system of which people impose law on motorist in this country is too much even in advance countries people used GPS to get to their location This our leaders self.

I always make a good attempt to read the "report" before commenting. But the post which contained the clarification from FRSC was by an individual further down in the thread; it wasnt in the original post. You absolutely do not expect me to read through every comment and opinions dropped by individuals in a thread do you?

If she was holding her phone, then its wrong. If she has a phone holder, its ok. Cos even cars have GPS. The thread title is misleading

This is very simple strurv (in falz voice). It is like they want all road users needing directions per time to redirect all their requests from maps systems optimized to make navigation easier just so navigation can be much more harder and time wasting and they'd stop their work and become THE navigators instead.

All these organizations that are meant to be looking for workers are loaded with requests and no room for expansion in many years. In comparison with some of the developing countries even inside Africa these isn't enough man power to have an official on the road doing stop and query or what ever they do nowadays. That's why the integration of technology such as cameras and other devices is rampart and taking over. You F up camera snap you, you get ya bill with evidence.
Maybe It's going to take at least 25 years before Nigeria reaches there.. and it's with a capital MAYBE

DM me if you can. This is not an established offence. I will do this case for you if you are interested and they will rather pay you damages for wrongful arrest. Besides, you can't move around aAbuja without GPS. There are just few directional signs

She probably held the phone in one hand while maneuvering the steering wheel with the other. That is a sure hazard and I commend the FRSC for putting a stop to her antics.

When answering calls ensure to put the phone down and use the speaker mode. You should not hold the phone while driving because you are bound for an accident, if not on that day then one sure day.

When using Google Maps buy a hanger for your phone or switch on the voice mode which gives directions while driving.

Sat nav works by real time....
When u stop, it stops....
It directs u as u drive....
Cars now have GPS installed on their dashboard.....
They aren't stupid, manufacturers know what they are doing....

There's no proof anywhere it puts road users at risk or it increases the incidence of accidents on the road... ...
If anything it helps naive drivers avoid wrong turns, thereby making roads safer....

She is not telling the whole truth. A phone holder or parking on the side of the road to enter address would have saved her from a fine. It is irrelevant if she was on Google or changing phone's music playlist connected via Bluetooth. She is getting fined for being distracted via the use of an handheld device while driving.
