Its is nt neutralization process. It's dilution. Neutralization is when acid and base react to form salt and water only.

Mathematically
C1 = 30% = 0.3
V1 = 100ml
V2 = 100ml + 100ml( beverage of zero conc.) = 200ml
C2 = ?

Solution:
C1V1 = C2V2
0.3× 100 = C2 × 200
C2 = 0.3×100÷ 200
C2 = 0.15= 15%

Therefore, the alcoholic concentration has reduced by half upon addition of a 100ml beverage of zero concentration.

Doctors in the house, is the guy correct with his ideology?.

It didn't change the alcoholic content but it reduced the concentration (made it easier to drink)

Yes and it's simple science expressed by the formula
C1V1 = C2V2

C= Concentration
V=Volume

So if you add a non-alcoholic drink to an Alcoholic drink there will be an increased new Volume (V2) while the new Concentration(C2) will decrease.

Proudly a science student cheesy

To answer this, let's understand these basics
Alcoholic drinks are labelled with their alcoholic contents usually in percentage. For example to determine the alcohol content of beer of 5% alcohol in a 50cl bottle. 5% alcohol is same as saying that there is 5grams of alcohol in 10cl or 100mls of beer. Therefore if someone consumes the 50cl or 500mls, he has taken in 5 x 5 =25 grams of alcohol ie 25gms/500mls
When he "dilutes" this beer in question with a non alcoholic drink, say sprite of 30cl or 300mls and drinks the whole content, although the concentration of the alcohol is now 25gms/800mls, he has still taken in 25gms of alcohol.
Now the physiological effects of these two concentrations ie 25gms/500mls and 25gms/800mls may differ in their time of action. While it may take 25gms/500mls faster to intoxicate because it is more concentrated, 25grms/800mls may take longer because it is less concentrated. Note that their intoxicating effect is as a result of the concentration of the alcohol per unit volume of the total drink, it is NOT that the sprite has a special power or ingredient that neutralized the alcohol.
Using the example the OP sited therefore, the lady may not feel the effect of the alcohol until after sometime when the concentration of alcohol in her system reaches the threshold that leads to intoxication.

Love this, am not even good in related maths subject, but if I get you right, make I kuku ma drink am(alcoholic), once drank, it's just a matter of time, I shall be intoxicated.

That means, if I want to be intoxicated in the next two hours, mixture is allowed. Smile....that's nice.

Lol

I will drink in the morning, and be intoxicated in the afternoon. Very peaceful!

Very good.

You have stated it more succinctly and very graphically.

I read through all the comments, this here clearly explains the case in very few words. Thumb up.

Then, what is the originality of the percentage from the source?

I thought this is a minor headline, but getting more exposed via multiple comments.

That is the percentage per unit volume. Or concentration, in chemistry term.

If you dilute it, what you get is reduced concentration but the alcoholic content remains intact.

E.g. dissolve 10 cubes of sugar in 100 ml of water. Also dissolve same 10 cubes in 1 litre of water. The 100ml sugar solution is sweeter than the 1 litre sugar solution but that doesn't change the fact that you have taken 10 cubes of sugar if you drink either of them completely.

So let us not deceive ourselves and face reality jehjeh.
you don't get it. It dilutes the alcohol, if you mix 1 bottle of fanta and 1 beer the tipsyness with only 1 beer won't be the same.

This is not true. Chemical reactions mean that something can change from one state to another. If a diluted drink can no longer make you as tipsy then it is not that same drink. If you were to write the equation for the reaction would the reactants not be different from the products? A change in the number of molecules affects the molecular structure, meaning that the what you have is actually something else. That's why your sugar drink will be less sweet when you add too much water. Water is a chemical too.
By adding water you have initiated a chemical reaction between the molecules of sugar and H20. What you get is not exactly the same. It cannot be the same. Change is chemical structure effects a change in physical properties; in this case taste.

Adding soft drink maintains the concentration of the alcohol content, but reduced the binding frequency for metabolism. Hence less alcohol binds to the alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme per time, compared to taking it alone, binding is fast and direct!

slows down the effect, by diluting alcohol you would take less alcohol overall before you get filled up compared to taking just alcohol

This is why Cognacs like Henessy with little or no water has alcoholic content of 45% while Beer has 5% with plenty of water in it, same as red wine with 12% alc ..

so 3 shorts of spirit or a tumbler is the same thing as drinking like two bottles of beer or a glass of red wine

P.S: if you must mix your Alcohol use water or fruit juice(never use Diet coke or coke), because alcohol dehydrates you by making you sweat and pee so you need water and vitamins from the juice, mixing soft drink and alcohol is like mixing diabetis with liver problem

..
what about mixing with malt. Asking for a friend

Good analogy. In essence, reduced concentration = reduced effect. However if the drinker still went ahead to finish all the content, does it not amount to the same concentration?

Illustration, if Atiku consumes a bottle of red wine of 25% volume and Buhari consume 5 bottles of beer of 5% volume (which can also mean same as 1 watered-down red wine into 5 bottles).

In final analysis, have they not both consumed same level of alcohol?

I'm no science student but I'm thinking maybe some chemical in the coke shouldn't be mixing with another chemical in the brandy hence the result grin

No, It was the brandy doling out undiluted shit on me grin grin grin

Surely it changes the alcohol content.

Alcohol effect depends on its concentration in the consumed volume.
It's like sugar and salt. The effect on the body is reduced when it is diluted.

when you mix alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks, the alcohol is diluted and its concentration is reduced. That's why you can drink more volume of jack daniel by mixing with coke.

All of u saying it only makes it easier to drink or change d taste are wrong let me explain why. We all know conc H2SO4 is acid and if u pour it on ur body is will burn or damage ur skin but when you add water to it it makes it an aq (aqueous solution) and if u pure this new solvent on ur body it might burn ur skin but on a much slower rate dan the conc H2SO4, same goes for d alcohol once u add water or a non alcoholic drink to it it actually reduces d potency of d alcohol and u will get tipy or drunk at a much slower pace dan when u take d alcohol straight.

why are you comparing mass and volume

I'm glad u know ur serial dilution formula, but in analytical chemistry after calculations u need sense to draw ur inference. The 30% in ur beverage is 30ml. Of undiluted ethanol made up to 100ml with ur beverage, so even if u dilute the drink and consume the whole of the diluted drink u've still consumed dat 30%= 30ml of absolute ethanol. So dat 30% will still work on u no worry. However the rate of reaction inside ur body will be altered simply because ur system is more hydrated.
Funny enough u can still see it this way cos it's the same tin. U buy one beer and one fanta u drink d beer first, den drink the fanta immediately after. Have u reduced d concentration of the beer?

I have no problem with ur calculation cos it's very correct. But bro no be every thing be maths. We too cram for this country.
