Title and Subtitle

A book’s title is the first extremely important piece of book metadata you’ll be asked to provide. Your book’s title is how your book introduces itself and is part of a reader’s overall first impression of your work. However, coming up with a compelling book title can be arduous work. You’ll want to brainstorm several ideas and then test them with your friends, family, and reader audience before settling on the one that is original, memorable, just enough words, and easy for your readers to say and type for years to come. Here are four guidelines to help you craft a compelling title for your book.

1. Follow the PINC Acronym

PINC was created by Michael Hyatt (former CEO of Thomas Nelson and author of Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World). It stands for Promise, Intrigue, Need, and Content. In essence, your book title should do one of the following four things:

Make a Promise. Your book title can be your promise to your reader—what they will get out of reading your book.
Create Intrigue. Your title can engage your potential reader in a compelling way—drawing them in to learn more.
Identify a Need. Your book title can point out a need in someone’s life. It may be a need they already know they have, or it might be a need they become aware of through reading your title.
State the Content. A book’s title can also simply state the content of the book—letting the reader know exactly what they will learn or receive from reading it.


2. Make Your Book Title Original

Titles cannot be copyrighted in the United States. Therefore, two or more books can have the same title. However, if you use a title that is the same or very similar to another book, it makes it hard for your title to stand out. Be sure to search any potential book title you are considering to make sure your potential title doesn’t already have an insane search volume or a negative connotation on the web in general, and also search it on Amazon to make sure other books don’t have the same title before settling on your final title. Having an original book title helps your book stand out.

While you want your book’s title to be original, it should still match its contents. Whether your book is fiction or nonfiction, the title should reflect what’s inside. Weighty books should not have cheerful titles, and conversely, funny books should not have grave titles.


3. Make Your Book Title Memorable

Creating a memorable title is also important. If your title is too short or too long, people won’t remember it. One- or two-word titles often don’t convey enough information and are harder to remember than titles that make a statement. The book title Sing is actually harder to remember than Sing Your Way to Peace. Titles that are too long can lose a reader’s attention. New studies are showing that attention spans have dropped from 12 seconds to 8 seconds, so make an impression, but quickly.


4. Optimize for Mobile Reading

Consider that many readers are looking for their next book on their tablets and phones, so make sure your book is mobile-friendly. That means you have to create a book cover and text format that translate to the small screen. Your book title should be no more than 80 characters long to help facilitate easy reading in this format.

When Should I Publish My Book? Picking Your Publication Date

Just because a book is finished doesn’t mean the timing is right. Your publication date is important. There are certain months that would be perfect for your book and make your pitch to retailers and media outlets easier, and some months you should avoid altogether. Below are some tips to help make sure your book doesn’t launch with bad timing.


1. January – New Year, New You

If you are publishing some kind of self-help or project book (i.e. diet, personal growth, career, home improvement, etc.), then this is your month. People are starting off the year thinking about change, and they’re in the market for books to help them.


2. February – Love

As you think about your book release, you want to think about the mood people are typically in the month it comes out. February is obviously the month when Valentine's Day falls, so love is in the air. If you are publishing a cookbook, plenty of people will be looking for ideas for that perfect Valentine dish. Romances and poetry books are also strong releases during this month. A lot of people pop the question on Valentine’s Day, so if your book is wedding-themed, then now’s the time to get it out.


3. March – Spring

Spring is in the air and so is Easter. People are starting to think about that summer garden, which makes gardening books a good release. Easter typically falls in March or early April, and people are looking for inspirational books, religious tie-ins, and picture books to put into Easter baskets.


4. April – Travel

Spring is nearing an end, and so is school. People are starting to think about summer, and more importantly: vacation! April is a good time to publish travel books or books about exotic locales. April is also National Poetry Month, so it's a good time for poetry as well. People are starting to think about their summer reads, so if you are hoping for your book to wind up on someone’s beach blanket, make sure you are thinking about marketing—even if your book won’t be out for two or three months.


5. May – Mom

May publishing is centered around one person: Mom. Yes, people do read and buy other things, but personal memoirs, coffee table books (such as photo books), inspirational romances—or any other book that goes perfect with a bouquet of roses—are all good releases during this month. Cinco de Mayo is also this month, so if your book falls into Chicano literature, then this is the month to release it.

Maintenance Is Key

To consistently perform over a long period of time, you need to actively maintain your assets.

Once you're done researching your keywords, creating an amazing book cover, proofreading the book to make sure there are no unnecessary typos and eventually publishing your book...half of the work is now complete.

You still need to put in the effort to ensure your books are well maintained.

Know this, just like everything in life, the pareto 80:20 principle will always apply.

This principle says that 80% of your results will come from 20% of your efforts.

80% of the riches in the world is controlled by 20% of the people


Just like all fingers are not equal, all books are not equal

In publishing, this means that 80% of your revenue will come from 20% of your books (roughly speaking)

I've seen this in my business so its no joke. All books are not equal...no matter what you do, there'll always be those books that perform averagely and, sometimes below average

But, the strange thing is that you also, occasionally, get those books that completely blow it out of the park and more than compensate for other books that aren't doing so well.

Some publishers subscribe to a set it and forget it approach to their business...once a book is published, they don't do anything to maintain it..they just move forward and keep publishing.

I take the complete opposite approach..I actively maintain ALL my books

how?

1. By checking their sales figures against a target I set for each book
2. By actively monitoring the conversion of the ad campaigns backing them

If the campaigns are doing very well, I double or sometimes triple the daily spend. If I can spend $1 to make $5, I'll keep throwing money at that ad all day long!

On the other hand, if the ad isn't doing so well, then I put on my engineering hat and start split testing different variables

1. Is the book description converting well?
2. Is the price point good for that niche?
3. Is the content good?
4. Am I targeting the right audience with my ads? etc.

There's a lot you can work with...and it's always fun when, after much tweaking, I turn an average book into a winner.

Treat publishing like you'd treat a serious business, and it'll pay you like a serious business

It's not about giving out things for free.

A Colleague Sold His Amazon Publishing Business For Six Figures

Do you brand your publishing business around you or around a pen name?

A lot of students ask me this question.

It depends on a number of factors..

1. Are there plenty of authority figures in that niche?
2. Do you understand that niche very well?
3. Do you plan to monetize that niche by creating a backend course or upsell?

If there are plenty of authority figures in that niche and, more importantly, you notice the authority figures tend to do a lot better than the unknown self-published authors, then it's perhaps better to brand it around your name.

However, if all those authors are based in the USA and your customer base are mostly US people, you might be at a disadvantage being an author from Africa. Customers may be more comfortable buying from a fellow US author than from an African author. So, if you're going to go this route, you might want to use only your English name(s).

Secondly, whether you use a pen name or your English name will depend on how well you understand the niche and the topic of your book. Customers will email you from time to time to help them with stuff in the book they don't quite understand. As a pen name, you can perhaps hide behind your computer and get away with it. But, if you've put yourself out there as an expert and you're unable to address their question to their satisfaction, they might go the review section of your book to lay out their grievances and/or call your authority to question.

So. if you're going to put yourself out there, make sure you know your stuff.

Finally, if you plan on monetizing that niche is some way e.g. if you're in the health and fitness niche and you also happen to be a fitness trainer, it makes more sense to brand it around your name so your customers know you personally. This way, you can sell them a fitness program as a back end upsell once you have them in your email list. They can visit your gym and work out under your guidance
