Bros just take it slowly, take time to think through all your decisions, once you are convinced that it what's best for the school, care less about what people say, bcoz making sure that the school continues to operate is you honoring your Dad, which isn't the priority of the staff and since they have little or nothing to lose in the end. Also, everyone can't be that bad, try to find an ally that can be giving u details of how the school operated before you took over and also about what staff think, u could also do open appraisals, ask them what they think is best for the school and if they have the school at heart. You could also add incentives. In the end you and your staff did be fine when they must have adjusted to the new rules and change of power which is normal and expected. Cheers 2 Likes |

If you allow this people to ruin the school, they will leave after the destruction Be fair in your judgement and do what's right Stop all the rubbish with tact and not exuberance Make new rules, introduce auditors etc Be tactful 3 Likes |

This is a simple matter. There are certain things you needed to do but never did. 1. Call a meeting of all staff (teachers, security, cleaners, support staff, etc) and provide refreshments. Tell them that as they know now, that your dad is dead and there is a new management in the school and that you need their help in helping you run the school. Ask them to give their various opinions about how things need to be done and you also suggest if you have a better way of doing those things. In this way everyone feels good that they are seen as relevant and also policy makers for the school. Pls remember to provide free food 2. You should not be scolding anyone, older or younger than you. This is called creating unnecessary enemies for yourself. Call the person and dialogue with him. During the dialogue, provide a little snack for the person. You will be surprised how many doors Coke and biscuits can open. You don't need to fire the old security staff. You just need them to upgrade their practices and be professional. 3. From time to time, hold meetings of which you provide staff with timely updates on how the school is going and how well the decisions taken in the first meeting are going. 4. Delegate relevant duties to various staff members according to their abilities and make everyone feel like they are contributing to the progress of the school. 5. The money must be in your control and let them know that the reason for this is because you are new to the management of the school and need to be able to learn the cash flow process. Let them know that it's not because you don't trust them but it's because you need to know how to properly run the business that secures their salaries every month. No need for gra gra or jagajaga behaviors. You create unnecessary enemies if you do that. Make everyone like you because already they are seeing you as a threat. Let them know that you are new and willing to learn from any of them. Don't be afraid to ask advice from any of your staff members even if you know the answer to the advice. It will make them feel important and respect you more. The problem you are running into is that you are doing big boss and trying to act like small oga at the top. E nor go work. 6 Likes 2 Shares |

I don't think you fully understand how to be a boss secondly u have to fish out the bad eggs and drop them. thirdly stop recycling security personnel from the same company . fourthly, the school business is always full of gossip YES I am in the system as well staff must gossip so you have to be very tactical and diplomatic in your dealings with them 3 Likes |

Jokerman: This is my advice. First, let everyone have the school/staff policy. Second, keep a short distance from the staff. Third, this should be at the end of the session, change the head mistress/ Principal... Look at the few efficient ones and promote them to vice positions and get a new Principal outside. Give Award to the good staff and take note of those who do eye service. May God continue to bless your work |

Be patient. You have to be smart. You may employ "divide and rule". You have to old meetings on more frequent occasions and hear what they have to say. Give them some sense of responsibilities. Overlook some things as though you never saw them. After all these, relieve the very troubling ones gradually of their jobs. He who wants to catch a monkey has to do like a monkey. 2 Likes |

The staff seem to have problem with your age more than anything else. You are just experience what I can call the " mini Nigerian syndrome." That is, attempt making a positive change and the whole world goes against you. The school has a size able number of pupils. If it is possible, employ and old experience person as a school administrator who handles the whole thing excluding finance and reports to you directly. Give the administrator a free hand and if it is possible, head hunt such a person from a competing school. 1 Like |

Over haul that place. Employ staff that will be potential replacement and gradually work your way to firing all the old staff one after the other. Dont do it at once. |

Keep changing the workforce gradually In particular the Supervisor you talked about. The problem you talked about is perculiar to every family business, some people will even tell you your dad used to settle them like it is them or your dad that established the school. The entitlement mentality amongst Nigerians is something else. So you need to keep changing to different people who are willing to work with the established ethos of the company. Afterall you can love a company or you want, but a company cannot do the same for you. Its the harshness of capitalism, its a business not a cooperative society. Just keep doing what you are doing now. In some months time you will results |

There is something called a RESET button. You need it right now. Sack all toxic staff as fast as you can. Hire a fresh set and possibly hands off the recruitment process till the end (later stages). Also tell your mum that she needs some rest and doesn't need to be too involved in the day to day running of the school. They can use sentiments to get to her too. 1 Like |

OP, kudos to you for trying to senitize a corrupt system. As a security consultant, the Serial Oscars (Security Officers) are poorly paid and as such the teachers are bribing them handsomely. This is what you should do. 1. Don't fall for the teachers gimmicks. Stand your ground. Moreover, apply the carrot and stick approach. 2. Reward hardwork and punish indiscipline. 3. Prepare a new memo stating the mission statement the school stand for; her rules and regulations and the consequences of breaking such rules. 4. Get close to few of the teachers and tell them to pass info about who are the bad influences in the schools. 5. Since you said some of the teachers are close to your parents, your parents can play a part too. Check my blog for all things security at www.securitymattersafrica.com |

Apparently there is nothing wrong with your style because its u . Is there anyone of the staff who is truly supporting ur style? (not in the favour-seeking way) If there isn't any bro you need to change. Your wife and Mom are telling you to cool down... It seems no one is even really supporting ur actions. Well they say "Power Corrupts... and absolute power corrupts absolutely. You need to change and understand the dynamics of good leadership if you aim for that tho!. School laws are meant to be made which is commendable you are trying to make and enforce. But you enforcement should not be rude or presumed harsh or unjust. Learn to caution with love evn if it pisses you or get ready to loose your Dad's business to winding up |

Law 45: Preach the Need for Change But Never Reform Too Much at Once. Judgement “Everyone understands the need for change in the abstract, but on the day-to-day level people are creatures of habit. Too much innovation is traumatic, and will lead to revolt. If you are new to a position of power, or an outsider trying to build a power base, make a show of respecting the old way of doing things. If change is necessary, make it feel like a gentle improvement on the past.” Thank me later 2 Likes 1 Share |

Jokerman:Why do u need some advice when you’re doing things right? You’re forcing a culture of integrity and accountability. Give them a set dateline to either embrace these cultures or be fired. At the end of the day, people will gossip more if u let them run down an inherited legacy from ur dad. New sheriff is in town, fall in line or be fired! |

Adekaka12345: Follow this and in addition... Do a survey/check and find out who the bad eggs are, look for a way to discuss with them to see if it can be sorted and if you noticed it can't be settled, wait till the long vacation, secretly recruit their replacement without informing them, give them the info a week to the resumption. The thing is they will always try to corrupt the new ones. Getting a principal from outside is not really advisable because of insubordination, it is more advisable to look for the good ones (existing staffs) with adequate qualifications and experience and put them up for the promotion (to principal), if you want to hire any external or new person, let it be a quality control officer to help in running the school efficiently. Hope you are not withholding any info concerning this from us? |
