Look at these fools talking about Monopoly. When you remove the Monopoly from Dangote, then I believe you would be making sense. At least it would create more jobs and a large competitive market.
How? No monopoly, we have so many other cement company (Dangote largest line) doing well (See Bua report on fp today).
The other area we have government protected monopoly is telecommunications (GSM).

nice move, hope they try and end monopoly in the manufacturing sector currently being enjoyed by northern hegemony
Re: FG Prohibits Exclusivity Rights In Sports Broadcasting by eldoradoxx: 7:57am On Jan 10, 2020
Dangote and BUA are into manufacturing and the market is free from everyone. Hi TV (a Nigerian cable tv) came into the market but was killed soon after because it once beat Multi choice and secured right to broadcast EPL. It was killed by Multi choice (A south African company) that fears any local competitor. Multi choice knows that its gold mine is in its exclusive broadcast right of EPL and ECL

Made sense where?
You pay for something and a government asks you to share it to your competitors for free?
Is that how government has made Dangote and BUA grow into overreaching monopolies?
Please no vex me for early momo o.

DSTV isn't compelled to share. They are compelled to resell such rights at commercially viable costs.

Meaning is AIT Wants to buy the rights to also show UEFA games, DSTV must sell to them

That may create issues because you can't dictate the rate at which multi choice should sell in an open market. But they can mandate that content be bought by a consortium of say atleast 4 unrelated media firms with at least 50% of them Nigerian

Hmmmm.... this would be the best achievement of lai mohammed if truly excecuted but this is NIGERIA .

The worst in proper perspective.
You cannot legislate the price of what you don't produce. Otherwise you reduce supply and create black market hiked prices.
How far with rent fixing laws? What have they yielded? More properties available for rent at the fixed prices?

Good idea...

But do we have broadcast companies that have the finances to compete with DSTV for say, broadcast rigths for Premiership??

HITV failed because in the end they could not compete with the financial juggernaut of DSTV.
we've Startimes

Who grounded TSTV?
Re: FG Prohibits Exclusivity Rights In Sports Broadcasting by eldoradoxx: 8:03am On Jan 10, 2020
The question is why can't a Nigerian watch EPL on his Strongtv or NTA or Channels TV or whatever TV he watches. Why must he pay exclusively to South African company- Multi choice before he can watch EPL etc? Like I commented earlier, we need to expand our economy not shrink it. To allow Multi choice exclusive broadcast right of EPL is to kill our local cable TV stations because many people subscribe because of the football games which they can only watch on DStv.
DonFreshmoney:
angry grin

This is a very bad idea. DSTV should be the only cable broadcasting all Football matches. Its not their fault we don't have suave businessmen who are brave to invest in cable stations. Imagine if one useless cable like startimes have monopoly rights to premier league and dstv retains their champion league rights.. are you saying we would start hunting and buying for 2 or more cable TV to watch matches?

It's not by force to subscribe for Dstv, if you are broke, you can go for GOTV or Strong TV. Dont be who you are not.

This can be a very complicated policy that it takes a lot of brain work to do a good job.

If you force dstv to sell, others may buy for peanuts and hence discourage further investments by dstv.

I expect that the policy should be fine tuned such that for every year, the FG set a price floor and price cap which would be based on the amount that Sky Sports and BT sports sold to Nigeria.

Argue like an enlightened person, I'd Dangote a monopoly? Have u not heard of other cement companies in Nigeria? That Dangote happens to be the largest does not make it a monopoly. Aside DST or the sibling Gotv, where else can you watch EPL and Champions League. That is what monopoly is
