NimrodEndOfDays:How? No monopoly, we have so many other cement company (Dangote largest line) doing well (See Bua report on fp today). The other area we have government protected monopoly is telecommunications (GSM). 1 Like |

Re: FG Prohibits Exclusivity Rights In Sports Broadcasting by eldoradoxx: 7:57am On Jan 10, 2020 |
Dangote and BUA are into manufacturing and the market is free from everyone. Hi TV (a Nigerian cable tv) came into the market but was killed soon after because it once beat Multi choice and secured right to broadcast EPL. It was killed by Multi choice (A south African company) that fears any local competitor. Multi choice knows that its gold mine is in its exclusive broadcast right of EPL and ECL anonimi: |

Mynd44: That may create issues because you can't dictate the rate at which multi choice should sell in an open market. But they can mandate that content be bought by a consortium of say atleast 4 unrelated media firms with at least 50% of them Nigerian 1 Like |

LegacyB: The worst in proper perspective. You cannot legislate the price of what you don't produce. Otherwise you reduce supply and create black market hiked prices. How far with rent fixing laws? What have they yielded? More properties available for rent at the fixed prices? 2 Likes |

Re: FG Prohibits Exclusivity Rights In Sports Broadcasting by eldoradoxx: 8:03am On Jan 10, 2020 |
The question is why can't a Nigerian watch EPL on his Strongtv or NTA or Channels TV or whatever TV he watches. Why must he pay exclusively to South African company- Multi choice before he can watch EPL etc? Like I commented earlier, we need to expand our economy not shrink it. To allow Multi choice exclusive broadcast right of EPL is to kill our local cable TV stations because many people subscribe because of the football games which they can only watch on DStv. This can be a very complicated policy that it takes a lot of brain work to do a good job. If you force dstv to sell, others may buy for peanuts and hence discourage further investments by dstv. I expect that the policy should be fine tuned such that for every year, the FG set a price floor and price cap which would be based on the amount that Sky Sports and BT sports sold to Nigeria. 1 Like |

Argue like an enlightened person, I'd Dangote a monopoly? Have u not heard of other cement companies in Nigeria? That Dangote happens to be the largest does not make it a monopoly. Aside DST or the sibling Gotv, where else can you watch EPL and Champions League. That is what monopoly is NimrodEndOfDays: 1 Like |
