I think this is true. Many people study courses that they have no natural love or passion for. The only motivation for many is the socio-economic benefit not because they have a natural affinity or inclination for the course.

I can tell you that every OAU student is brilliant because no matter what you must score 200 in jamb and post-jamb before you can get admission. Anything less than 200 is automatically no admission - even if your father is Buhari and your godfather is Trump!

But the problem is many students are using their brilliance in the wrong direction. Each course has its peculiar needs. Someone who's brain was created for education will want to kill himself because of medicine or pharmacy.

I suggest that they review our educational Systems.

Also that they give proper guidance and exposure to secondary school students about other courses; how they improve the society and examples of successful people in those fields.

Me as an example, my father saw me as a wasted effort when I insisted on studying geography. According to his calculation, the only opportunity for a geography graduate is teaching. Well maybe that's true if I relied on my certificate alone. But no, I retrained and re-educated myself and today doctor na king for him lane and I'm a king in my lane.

But to be candid, if other departments wanted to train us to the real standard -haa!- 70% (in fact 90%) of us will not graduate. Unfortunately, health sciences don't have the luxury of push-and-go since they deal directly with human life.

honestly speaking,, u really dealt with d issue,, I quite agree with ur stance ...

In abroad, the lecturers would be in serious trouble by now. It is an indication of failure on their part. Their inability to educate properly or teach their students.

Nigeria education is fundamentally deficient largely due to parochial and archaic lectures and lecture system.

In developed universities, a lecturer once he or she notices a dip in your thesis or assignments, he arranges a meeting with you to discuss what the issues may be with you. He can go as far as referring you to Guidance and Counseling unit. They go the length to have you understand. A school's performance should never be judged on mass failure.

Richdad
You mean the lecturer should stop them from being marlians?

And these same students go abroad and come out tops
Our education system is broken totally. If proper admission criteria are used to admit students, such mass failure should be impossible.

I also feel jamb is not suitable for university admission anymore. We need HSC or A level system back. That allows students to mature academically and prepare for independent learning.

Such mass failure is a waste of resource and time.

Students should also be given grants or bursery depending on the family economic background. Financial issues are affecting many students too.
Fuel subsidy is not more important than education subsidy already in place and extra bursary.

Healthcare and education subjects students need even more bursary as they will be key sector staff

Instead of reading your books and getting a better grade in the course of study ,you are busy running around on social media.
When you have an extra year ,then you will know what a school is and social media is not !!!
Lazy generations!!!

That you scored 200 & above in JAMB EXAMS does not necessarily mean you are brilliant..with the scourge of massive Examination malpractices in the country, even to scored 300 in jamb or distinctions in SSCEs is now so cheap..

Exactly. For courses like Medicine and Pharmacy, applicants should be interviewed so that their suitability for that trajectory can be better approximated by the programme tutors.

Scoring jamb is not necessarily the point. Do you have the social skills and emotional intelligence necessary for being a pharmacist? Honesty? Able to think laterally and under pressure...?

If they give you a calculation question right there in front of everybody on the interview panel, would you be able to do it

Its not now that they have failed that everybody will suddenly remember that they should have gone for something else. The admission criteria should be more stringent to avoid conversations like this

What's wrong with that result? It was meant to only separate those that truly prepared for the exams from those who didn't... Not really a test of brilliance.
Bro you cannot understand. This guys are very brilliant I have allot of friends there...but pharmacy is very tough..more tougher than medicine..

Pharmacy is too tough in OAU
Imagine offering BCH303 as an elective!!!
Course that's a core course for BCH students, even they struggle to pass it.
Our educational system needs reviewing, and the culprit is, our students this days are getting extremely LAZY, they want to flex too much while studying.
I always feel sorry for those pharmacy guys...the course is more tougher than medicine...I mean far tougher...

This is a testament of their porous method of teaching, the whole department needs a complete overhaul, the school should sack the lectures taking that course.

honestly the lecturers ability should also be questioned.. And the government and the academic world in nigerial has failed... For instance a guy in my set that just graduated from kogi state uni(now paau) is already a lecturer in a federal poly in the state. Well it not that i wish him bad but this guy still has carryoves to wright, he wrote all and i mean all his exams using phones in the exam all but because he is a politician boy.. Mhen this guy cannot speak one correct sentense o so i just imagin what and how he will lecture and explain things to students
