My Sorjorn Into Rice Farming In 2020. by ikelords(m): 10:25am On Feb 02, 2020
Sometime in 2019 I made up my mind to go into rice business of which, I started by buying processed rice from mills, print my own bags and bagged it then supplied it to markets in one of the big cities in the south east, the profit margin was cool but the time it took for me to recover my money from those I supplied discouraged me, so I pursed and restrategized on how to benefit greatly from the rice value chain in Nigeria.
Shortly after I stopped supplying already milled rice, Buhari closed the border and rice business started booming, I started receiving calls from those my customers to supply them rice that they will pay cash, I didnt mind them at all because I have made up my mind to quit begging people to pay me for goods I supplied them. Around December 2019 I made up my mind that I will be going into rice farming proper.

So I and my friend started making contacts on how to start farming rice, the people we met refused to teach us, a lot of promise and fail, God so kind I came in contact with a relation of mine who is a fadama facilitator and lucky enough he was well grounded in rice farming and have numerous contacts of rice farmers in the south east, I and my friend was linked to a youth leader in one rice farming village who helped us sourced for land at the rate of 1k for a chain and 25k for a hectare ( 25 chains make up a hectare) we paid for 10 hectares.

The bush was burnt and the land was measured we got almost 10 hectares, but the land was bigger than 10 hectares, the man later told us to farm as much as we can, if we have the resources and the strength to do so

Save yourself alot of stress friend. Why not focus on what you are doing already? And correct or improve your operation model. Direct farming is a new terrain to you and there lurks its peculiar intricacies which are new to you. Will you be able to weather the storm till the very end? Dont tell me you will combine farming rice with milling rice and packaging? Ain't you over stretching your self like that? Best of luck friend as you have made up your mind. See you at sales time.

Thank you boss for your input, I have always admired your contribution on previous rice thread where the menace of quela bird was discussed. Why I decided to quit was because I was being owed a lot, I was at the mercy of these guys in the market, so I dont want that to happen again, i want to farm and sell it to processing plant. More of your deep critisim and guidance is need as an experienced hand in rice farming

My friend before the border closure, anything goes with local rice. Now with border closure, cash and carry is the order of the day.

As you have secured the land, I wish you the best.

But on a second thought, you are better off doing the formal. Market forces determines your decisions; next steps. But in the latter, you simply do not have control over anything ( including your sales price ), prices of inputs, labour, weather etc. The only thing you have control over is your "interest" and your good management practices ( GAP ) if you can manage the risks and dynamics very properly.

Border closure in 2019 till date is an interesting dynamics in the agricultural space, it only and will favour those already in the line of businesses it seeks to protect. But for new entrants, its might yield another untold results. The border might just be flung open anytime.

Ask me for clarifications if you need to.

I am yet to recover from some reckless new farm openings gone bad and so have lost a lot of personal monies, so my tone has changed and I speak and write big grammar more now grin I sit more at the analysis table than I do in the fields now.

Good Idea.
1. How many KG of rice can be obtained from 1 bag (100kg) of Paddy?

2. How much does milling cost per 100kg

Thanks

Birds during the raining season migrate and before they return we should have harvested. Thanks for pointing this out, that was my fear before i decided to venture into rice farming there was a thread saliubello did on his previous experience with birds and the damages they caused, I learnt a lot and took preventive measures by asking lot of questions from experienced farmers on when the birds migrate and when they return and time to plant to get the best yeild. Boss you will still teach me pepper and garden egg farming when the time comes o! Am loyal sir

a hectare of land when planting by broadcasting it takes 55 to 60kg and in return you are likely to get about 3.5 to 6 tons of rice paddy, this also depend on your agricultural practice. If you are to mill 70% is to white rice and 30% is for the rice bran/ husk. Let's say you get 1 ton from one hectare which is 1000kg, 70% of it is 700kg for white rice while 300kg is the rice bran.. I hope you understand

Yes I understand.
How much does it cost to mill?
I'm thinking of buying unrefined rice and then milling it.

@ikelords, I planted upland rice and not lowland rice. The difference is that upland rice are plant on dry/moist soils while lowland rice are transplanted in marshes and wetlands. Which are you planning on doing??

I didnt buy the land, it was leased. They have farming lands for sale but for those buying more than 10 plots and the price is reasonable.

36 cans of non selective herbicide was purchased for the 10 hectares, this will be used to kill the weed before planting and also 30 cans of selective herbicide was also purchased, this will also be used to kill weed after 3 to 4 weeks of planting. It is called selective because it kills the weed and leave the rice.

The reason for buying farm inputs early is because it is cheaper now, when buying during farming season the price is usually very high.
