"Today is a great day... not because we are going to bring the heavens down, but because we are going to demostrate to the world how we feel about oppression." These words were made in on Febuary 23rd 1966 at 3pm, at about 5pm the first shots were fired to begin the first struggle against miniority oppression in Nigeria.
This piece is a result of extensive research on struggle of the Ijo, Niger Delta minority struggle led by Adaka Boro. It also sheds light on the Eastern (Igbo) region view on self determination. I will try to make it as brief as, but I will also make a summary.

Anything concerning the Niger Delta "Struggle" is always wrapped in layers and layers of lies. No offense.

That said, go ahead and publish these lies. They may yet be entertaining.

On the 23rd of Febuary, 1966, 'operation 0' began with the intent of dislodging fedral police taking over Yenegoua before 12am. The battle of Yenegoua, was led by Adaka Boro, general officer of Niger Delta Volunteer Service, with a strenght of 159 soldiers. The battle was lost Adaka and his troops were captured.
Boro was a dismissed police officer who eventually procceded to UNN to study chemistry and eventually became the SUG president. He noticed however that their was a big dinstiction in national politics controlled by- Hausa, Igbo and Yourba. Ijo been the fourth largest ethnic group had no one in the top echloen of Nigerian politics to drive the Ijo nation to prominence and freedom. The Ijo's numbering about two million, had no adquate infrastructure, empowerment, educational ability etc. Ijo nationality, were under the Eastern region and tha was another undoing to their struggle.

Here's the thing, there was no single industry situated in the region, they were all situated in the outside Niger Delta, the fishery industry was 80 miles away at Aba, tie boat yard at Opobo was headquatered at Enugu, with most of its staffs mostly non-Ijo. More marginalzation were felt in 1959 when the Niger Delta Congress won only one seat at the Fedral house through Melford Okilo. In 1962 eastern region election and 1964 fedral election NDC lost to the. Igbo dominated NCNC. In the eastern region house they had four against 110, and 2 out of 58 in the mid western house.
1958 Adaka led a delegation to London, to look into the plight of the minorities, leading to the set up of Willinks commission and the institution of Niger Delta Development Board. Relive at last?

No sir! It wasn't in 1962 Boro began the internal cacus whose primary objective was to " organise ourselves into a strong political force to struggle for our self determination." Adaka with his assistant Owonaro went to country after country seeking suport, even went about indoctrinating Ijo's all over the West African continent on the importance of the struggle. Owanoro later went on to form the WXYZ, to prepare the minds of the Ijo youths for what was coming!!

The stage was set, . Tafawa Belewa was assasinitated by a bloody coup led by Nezeogwu, gen Aguiyi Ironsi took over as head of state. But in the Niger Delta region, something was brewing (hot coffee infact) Adaka leader of the NDVS had resigned his job sold his properties and returned to his hometown in Kiama, where he recruited and trained his soldiers for 6 months. The battle however lasted for 12days after which he was arrested alongside his deputies and sentenced to death. Yakubu upturned their death sentences and subsequently created Rivers State and made Spiff an Ijo man the governor. It was a bitter sweet victory. Even though they lost the battle of Yenegoua, they won the war of self rule and determination; but did they?

The real traitors in Nigeria. Only reason why Ojukwu went to war was because of Niger Delta oil, same with kanu.

The ND people have reiterated it several times that they don't want to be part of Biafra, even those who speak Igbo language have vehemently reject Biafra.

If Biafra mistakenly happen and ND is part of it, South Sudan will be a child's play

Is he a fool for stating the obvious? Did the Igbo's not control the Eastern region, where the Ijo's fell into at that time? What contribution to development of the ND region did they make?

It is remarkable that the so called "Niger Delta People" are so concerned about Igbos taking over their 'Oil' but they have no problems with the rest of Nigeria taking over their Oil

In other words, the so called "Niger Delta People" don't want to be fighting over their Oil with one ethnic group, the Igbos, in Biafra. But the so called "Niger Delta People" are very happy to fight with over 200 ethnic groups, including Igbos, over the same Oil, in Nigeria.

This logic means that the so called "Niger Delta People" are fools because only a fool sets out to make things more difficult for themselves than necessary

How many oil block belongs to Niger Deltans?
How many Niger Deltans head sections in NNPC?

Leave Ndị Igbo alone they are not your problem.
Without oil Ndị Igbo are doing better for themselves.

Nonsense !!

Who made the rule on how self determination should be sought Has any Ijaw leader come out to denounce him till date?

Even Asari Dokubo said he drew inspiration from Boro.
Who the Bleep are you to tell a people how to fight a perceived oppression ??

Was the so called assembly Ojukwu claimed to represent a full representative of the Eastern region ??

Was their a referendum amongst the minorities then ?

Its foolish after what Niger deltas did to igbos during the war they still have mouth to talk

Give ojukwu mandate through their reps ,go back n stabs us in the back ,took our properties

Yet when the whole country abandoned them na we stand by them ...yet all we get are insult n lack of trust

I grew up in port Harcourt ,stay in uyo ...my family have investment in bayelsa ...I know south south people ...especially ijaws ....they are intimidated by Igbo dominance

They fear merit competition would make them lose out to Igbo's ,...the only people in south south who do not fear Igbo's are the delta /Edo ...to some extent cross river

This groups have self believe

Today many ethnic groups stay n make money in rivers state but Igbo's have most investment here

Makinda made over 50 billion from pH ,show me is investment here

Apart from next oil ,show me any other Indigenous company building facility in rivers state thats owned by a none rivers man

Kilimanjaro ,genesis ,market square , everyday these are all Igbo men who made money in rivers state and invested back to the state ...can u say so of other tribes ? No
Yet we hate Niger delta

You didn't vote Eyo Ita. You voted NCNC which was headed by an Igbo man .
Eyo Ita was the deputy national president of NCNC . He became head of Eastern government by virtue of his position in the party .

It was a parliamentary system remember . And he was booted out when Zik returned.
