I regret leaving my old mother behind?

May God be with her

9 years in New York

Today marks 9 years without not seeing her

See u soon iya Ibeji?

Miss her food nd her jokes

This is one reason I have not left. I can't leave my parents and siblings behind and enjoy the good life. I rather enjoy this slum with them. I'm abroad and my parents are suffer. My conscience won't take it. I will make it here.

Let me reel out two statistic for you

1) According to NDIC, less than 5% of Nigerians have anything above 500k in their accounts.
That is why the insurance claim is capped at 500k (this is verifiable stats, check it out)

2)most Nigerians, both the ones in business and in paid employment make less than 150k per month (I think the figure was up to 90% sef) This is according to research done by NOI polls.

So from the two facts above
Your talk of "many ballers" is negated

We may be living in our bubbles as "upper middle class"

But Nigerja is largely a poverty stricken country
Just like most of Africa
they have monies in asset. It is easy to purchase asset in Nigeria. In many developed countries, you can’t just get an asset. Building a house is one of the simplest thing to start in Nigeria. You see why I mentioned standard of life is relative. That said. There are many guys doing well in Nigeria. Well may be I am just surrounded by many....

I know, and the affordable services from tailors, to salon( In one salon at the East Coast, I was told plaiting fee is 250 USD, what I do for 10 dollars, I almost turned back except for the fact that I needed to).

This is weird but I just got tired of speaking fluent English without a mix of Swahili as I had no East African around.

The little things!
your moniker sounds interesting . It reminds me of Washington Dulles airport . I miss D.C.. anyway, no place like home. I schooled and lived there for a few years before returning home and it has always been the best decision ever.

My regrets for leaving naija is not leaving earlier.
What I missed for leaving naija are:
1. 'Shortcuts' in getting things accomplished as you have to follow due process and procedures here in UK.
2. As Ibadan man, I missed my regular Amala and abula at ola mummy, Skye, iya ope etc
3. I missed my regular get-together with my friends all over drinking joints at Iwo road.
4. Can you imagine, sometimes I miss some of naija crazy ways of doing things. The noise, crazy drivers, cursing when a driver messed up, playing loud music all around the town, hawkers making noise in the neighbourhood etc

Nevertheless, I thank Jehovah God for taking me and my family out of Naija.

Wetin eyes see for naija, mouth no fit talk am finish.

Being hearing this song since childhood, Naija still never better, it is getting worst day by day..

Walahi it is getting worst. No hope for people like us except to work hard, make good money and make things easy for our children so they won't be like us.

This thread just made me feel somehow, no wonder people are engaging in ritualism and all sorts.

So Disgusting

If they give u free visa, it's your type that will run to the airport without looking back.

I wonder how u will be abroad and your parents will be suffering. Makes no sense.

I cannot imagine myself living outside Nigeria...for what? After schooling there I came back home. Now, I'm planning to buy a home for my family in Toledo so that each time we visit, we wouldn't have to lodge in hotels. A part of the house would be rented out. My family and I can visit anytime without the hassle of looking up hotels around town.

You are probably surrounded by many people doing well. Same here overseas. Some will say debt is plenty and struggle is hard. Not everyone is struggling. Some people can afford to pay for a house cash down without taking a mortgage.
Major difference between abroad and Nigeria is that atleast overseas especially in developed ones, the country levels almost everyone so the disparity between the rich and poor is not much. The poor can also afford alot of basic necessities to live a good life.

No you are wrong. Read my post. If you are doing a certain amount you find it very hard to leave that place. Will Bill Gates leave America if America becomes Nigeria tomorrow. Why? He has created a niche for himself. When you create a niche for yourself? You don’t have any regrets about your decisions. A country is not rated based on amenities but by GDP which we can term “productivity of the people”. Whilst I will agree that sometimes there needs to be basic amenities for people to be productive, it is not a basic requirement. You should be able to innovate. Put simply then, Nigerians are not productive as one would expect. Reason for the non productivity can be seen from comments on this thread. Nigerians calling Nigeria shot hole on social media. You see where the problem is. You don’t have to have any regrets living in or leaving Nigeria!

Read my first post again and it is not in anyway stated that i have regrets of any kind(s) leaving Nigeria, if anything i hinted at being glad i lived in Nigeria because it contributed to who i am today.

when you talk about GDP, i want to assume you know the factors that affect GDP, relate these factors as to their presence or absence in Nigeria today.
Again, CONNECT THE DOTS.

i've never been a politician and I can't be one. hungry people join Nigerian politics. the mistake most people in the diaspora make is their thinking that only those who have made it here are politicians. I'm a service provider in the health sector . Last year, we already met our annual target in August. What we made there after was in excess and every staff smiled home after profit sharing was declared last December. My friends I left behind , those who were mocking me back then for taking a decision of returning home are nowhere close to my achievements. Ask them to send home just 100usd and they'd block their family member's line forever. Shockingly, I spend on them whenever I visit US. I don't even inform them anymore of my schedules and visits as they've turned parasites.

there are 6 factors that affect GDP. Natural Resource, infrastructure, population or labor, human capital, technology and law. Of all 6, 5 are centered on human. We have got a good natural resource- oil . Human makes the law and adopts technology. We have good population. You see that we are not just productive as a nation. We have all failed both home and diaspora. The thread is about having regrets and I said you don’t have to have any regrets. You only have regrets when you feel you are not doing well. Read my post. You didn’t need to mention me if you didn’t understand me. No one judges you based on any amenities, you are judged based on your productivity. Should we get more productive, it will translate in amenities. The question is do you want to leave Nigeria so you can be productive or you want better amenities.

thank you for this. This goes to back to the law. Which is a weak system in Nigeria. The gap between the rich and poor in Nigeria is to wide. The tax law don’t favor the poor. So we have bad laws and law makers, who are still Nigerians. You see the problem is not about leaving or living. Is about the people!

This question is largely for Nigerians in diaspora. I wish to share their experiences on disappointments and regrets that they have for leaving Nigeria to live abroad.

Situations such as severance from extended family members, issues of cold and the rest were what some persons have mentioned in the past.

Please share your experiences and views.

Thanks

Most especially I miss the general freedom that every day to day life in Nigeria offers. If you’ve never left the country before you won’t understand. There’s more freedom sort of in Nigeria vs obodo oyibo where there are damn too many laws that, in many ways, you are restricted in what you could freely do. They often say that very soon the government would release laws on how human beings should sleep in their own bedroom. It’s that crazy. I also miss the sense of community in Nigeria vs the extremely high level of ‘minding your business’ that exists abroad that people rarely interact with each other. It’s somewhat better or similar to Nigeria in southern US vs Northern US here but overall it is lower here in the US vs Nigeria.

Lastly I used to miss our food, culture etc but with the plethora of Nigerians here in the US, in recent years plenty African stores have popped up here and there selling nearly every single item you could buy in a Nigerian market and with Nigerian events such as parties, weddings taking place regularly, I no longer miss this aspect.

My 2 cents.
