I'm a young man of 25. I met this very beautiful girl, aged 23 now, we've dated 4 years now. She's so humble, the love grew out of nowhere. She does everything a woman would do for a man and I do everything a man will do for a woman.

I found myself not doing anything without her and she cannot do anything without involving me, we actually love each other very much.

She started pestering me to have a blood oath with her because she was scared I would leave her. I laughed it off cos I knew I wouldn't cheat on her, she is everything I wanted in a woman.

Trouble started when I brought her home to meet my parents, I was actually happy that I had found my wife...

When she left, my father asked me where she was from, and I told him and my father told me I can't marry her because she was from the same village with me and thereby related by blood thereby marrying her is an abomination that she was my sister so to say and said our kinsmen would not be Involved if I insist on marrying her... I felt my world crumbling down like a pack of cards...

I told my girl and she was like, it's an old tradition and nobody will dictate to her who she would marry and she loves me and there was no going back...

As a man, I thought about it and wanted to let her go because I wouldn't want the stigma to be on us and my unborn kids... I showed her some attitude to make her hate me but she didn't, rather she would rather beg me not to leave her even when I'm at fault. I feel bad anytime I do anything to hurt her feelings...

Now, I actually want to get her pregnant and damn the consequences, do a court wedding if the need arises and relocate with her out from our state and start a new life elsewhere...

Another mind is telling me to let her go so we can move on with our lives, or even be a fugitive for her... I however know she will hurt herself if I leave her... I'm very confused about everything, I seriously need help... Why is Igbo tradition this way? I found love with this girl, now everything is about to be stripped away from me, just like that... I seriously need an advice please...

First off love is not a do it die affair, if it doesn't work I'm 100% sure u wud find 50 other gals like her of better only if u know how to go about it so dont get carried away. I'm not saying she's not special, everybody is unique in their own way.

Secondly ur tradition affects u when u are attached to it or when u stay with people attached to it. It's like a belief system.. So u can't marry that gal aslong as u plan to live in this country. Just let her go and what are her parents saying also? They are not bothered about the tradition? If they are not good bt ur own parents are to it's still a major issue.

I don't really believe in tradition bt this is my 2cents based on the scenario. It's too much of a headache to go in. U need peace in ur family not unncesary issues cos u must marry sm gal at all costs.

Finally the 2 families shud consult and decide or get ur church involved.

Also the fact she asked u to do a blood oat gives me the creeps, seems she’s known what she’s doing all along and trying to hook by all means. Cud be innocent bt seems more like sinister. Leave that gal alone. It’s too complicated and maybe detrimental. There are a thousand other gals out there I promise u.

Traveling out cannot save you from the consequences of your actions. You're still going to lose each other anyways and even in a deadly manner if you decide to go into it cos no one openly goes into incest and escapes the consequences. So its better to lose her in a peaceful way. And stop asking why the Igbo tradition is like that. Its been there ever before you existed.

See this one ooh, you wan to marry your sister abi. Dont try it brother, your father must support your marriage because it comes with massive blessings that will go after you to your unborn children. Love gbakwoku. Tell her the reasons and love her like a sister and let also see you as brother. I have such situation with my cousin, we were so close to each other but no immoral things to the extent that any time my gf comes she will be mad at me. But I have to talk sense to her and avoid her for like one year and she regain her senses. Like in my place, we do not marry from the same clan. but we can marry from the same village but a distant clan. Take your dad advice and avoid her. Love is stupid to reality and if you follow the stupidity of love you will miss the important stuff associated with life and well-being. Also stop having s*x with her. That's nsoala, sacrilege because you have root. Remember what makes the love so strong is because of the same relation blood that runs in you guys veins.

Marrying your blood relationship is frowned up in many cultures. That can not be against God.

In my town, I’m Igbo, people from same ‘umunna’ kinsmen are biologically linked. This is a huge extended family...same great great great grand parents. This is not recorded in any technological data but they have a smart way of investigating and finding out your link.

If such practice is strong in your place, it’s advisable to honour that. Let that girl go. Don’t be a rebel. It might bite both of you in the bum.
