I am in South Africa and this is how...

Ramaphosa announces 21-day lockdown, outlines range of dramatic interventions

President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced a three-week total shutdown, beginning midnight on Thursday, to contain the spread of the coronavirus.

The president detailed a lengthy plan to “save the lives of South Africans” from the spread of the deadly virus, with government projections suggesting the number of positive cases will go into the tens of thousands in just a few weeks if left unchecked.

Ramaphosa was addressing the nation on Monday night.

The president said all South Africans will have to stay at home from Thursday midnight, apart from emergency services, health workers, traffic officers, security services, banking services, soldiers, laboratory services, and businesses involved in supplying and producing food and basic services, like food and medication.

The government will be deploying the army to ensure the enforcement government’s new plan, as enacted in terms of the Disaster Management Act.

A full list of essential services and places to remain open will be made public soon, Ramaphosa said. “Individuals are not allowed to leave their homes except to buy food or seek medical care or get their social grant,” Ramaphosa said.

He said temporary shelters are being identified to house homeless people, people in need of quarantine and those who are unable to self-isolate in their own homes.

Ramaphosa noted the severe pinch business, especially smaller enterprises, would feel because of these regulations, but said a solidarity fund was set up, which invited members of the public to put money into to assist vulnerable people.

If it comes to it, the government will use funds in the unemployment compensation fund to assist smaller businesses.

The government has invested capital of R150 million into the fund, and has already received R1 billion each in donations from the Rupert and Oppenheimer families.

Banks and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange will continue to be operational. Ramaphosa called on all employers to encourage their employees to work at home. He said all major banks will put measures in place to mitigate any problems.

He said there will be assistance to the tourism sector, which is suffering due to a recently-introduced travel ban.

The president called for calm from the public, and said there was no need for panic buying since all essential and basic services will be operational.

“We can ensure a continuous supply of goods, so there is no need to stockpile.”

The government will rollout a supply of water to rural and poorly-resourced areas, Ramaphosa said.

The president, meanwhile, said South Africans returning from high-risk areas will be quarantined for 14 days. Non-South Africans from high-risk areas will be turned away.

Those who arrived from high-risk countries after 9 March will be confined to their hotel for 14 days in quarantine.

Ramaphosa condemned businesses which have marked up the prices of essential goods.

He added that people must not act in their own “selfish interests”.

“We will therefore act very strongly against any attempts at corruption and profiteering from this crisis,” saying that special units of the NPA have been instructed to act immediately against offenders.

Ramaphosa reiterated the need for good hygiene practices.

“We will prioritise the lives and livelihoods of our people above all else, and will use all of the measures that are within or power to protect them from the economic consequences of this pandemic.”

Well, working in health sector, we have to go to work amidst the lockdown.

Anyways, I show my ID if stopped to prove I'm in essential services.

I wear a half face ski mask when going to the store to shop for basic items , I shower with detol soap as it offers 24hrs protection and it's active ingredient is anti viral. Working in the Frontline you have to protect yourself anyhow.

I wash my hands like 20 times a day at work and sanitise afterwards.

Upon entering the hospital they check your vitals and log it in a book. They monitor you especially temperature wveryday in the event you show symptoms you are isolated and the coronavirus hotline is called.

Our admissions have been reduced, visitors have been banned and patients have been educated on what to expect after their discharge into the real world.

So far, we have witnessed no incidences and God will make it remain that way until this all blows over.
Same here,
the last part of your moniker, were u there at some point ?

My family and i are indoors here in Germany, although not same in all parts of Germany, some workers are still going to work, but with measures put in place to maintain social distance for example I needed to visit my Steuerberaterin to submit a doc,but when i called her on phone she told me she's still working but can't have any phisical consultancy unless I scan and send to her...lol . Secondly after I called my friends working in other cities in Germany to know the level of compliance, I noticed it is very difficult to shut down 100% Europe's biggest economy Germany as many people are still working.
However, supermarkets are still well stocked up so men dey house just dey do chop and shop..Lol..
As for the salaries of workers at home, we are yet to know how the sharing formula go be shaa, cos Deutschland must share like PDP.. or maybe na our Versicherungskasse go share shaa. Anyway we trust the government ALWAYS!!!

Normal day with nice weather here in NYC, now the epicenter of the Coronavirus in the US. I stay in most of the time, people are aware and keep a distance even when walking on the across the street and more people wearing masks. ‘Essential’ stores are still open with limited times with signs and warnings about Covid-19.

It’s projected to get much worse with the numbers, especially now with the more aggressive testing, and hoping in two weeks the numbers would sort of stabilize. Yet, somehow more worried about my family in Nigeria dealing with the virus situation, especially my parents.

Staying safe, you should too.

In East Lansing, MI everything is kind of shut down as most grocery stores have reduced hours and the bus system isn't working however, you can request/schedule a ride with CATA. They would pick you up to grocery stores to shop and bring you back or to work for those working. Grocery stores are short of Rice in recent times but I got every other food stuffs I need for the now at home.

grin THANK GOD FOR LETTING ME SEE ATIME LIKE THIS IN THE HISTORY OF AFRICA WHERE AFRICANS LOCKED THEIR BORDERS AGAINST ADVANCED NATIONS OF THE WORLD TELLING THEM THEY DON'T WANT THEM IN THEIR CONTINENT.

I ALSO PRAY TO SEE ANOTHER TIME WHERE THE CITIZENS OF ADVANCED NATIONS OF THE WORLD WOULD QUEUE AT THE EMBASSIES OF AFRICAN COUNTRIES IN THEIR LARGE NUMBERS SEEKING FOR VISA TO PERMANENTLY RELOCATE TO AFRICA...................... grin grin grin grin grin grin grin

CAN SOMEBODY SAY AMEN?

See comment.

Can you as a Nigerian/african also be allowed into those african countries now?

This has got nothing to do with african countries just locking their borders against advanced countries. Everyone is only securing its nation?
