Hello everyone - I'm not quite sure whether this is the right section to post this.

Anyways, I currently hold a Master's degree and I also recently gained admission into a PhD program in a UK university but with no funding from the school and the estimated total cost of the tuition and living expenses amount to about #16 million for the 3 years.

So, I decided to come seek the opinion of folks here with better experience if it really worth spending this amount in the long run or should I rather invest this amount?

Thank you in advance!

Normally, you should look at the salary scale of the people doing what you will get to be doing after you are through with your 3 years PhD program,
juxtapose it and weigh your options if it is worth it.

That is the only reasonable thing we can advice you right now with the little information you gave up there.

All the very best.

OP, you have to go back to your drawing board and do your calculation again, so you don’t make a very hasty decision, and get stuck in your second year.

Since you already admit there’s no funding from your Uni, there is NO WAY 16M would be enough for the 36 months of your research (Tuition fee and living expenses). I haven’t added conferences, symposium and seminars which you must attend as a PhD student. And I won’t advice you to actively work (that is depend on 20hours/week) to pay your rent and others, because, trust me, it’ll affect your research!

Your annual tuition won’t be less than £12,000 and living expense about £8,000, which will rise if you stay in London. So you’re looking at £20,000 per academic year.

16M is about £35,000, which means by your second year you’ll be stranded if you don’t get support from your school?

I am very doubtful 16m will fund your tuition and living cost in the UK for 3 years.

The average cost for a Masters tuition and living expenses is around 12m....

I think you should do your calculations well before taking that step.

By the way - having a PhD is a personal decision. If you haven’t got loads of experience working in your industry, and you do not plan to be an Academic, I am afraid your PhD will make a little difference to your remuneration.

You will technically be overqualified.

You can easily make your money back, if you are having your PhD in one of d STEM courses, and have a chance of working in Europe, but if you will be returning to Nigeria after ur PhD, then I will suggest u get funding(scholarship).16M is a whole lot of money bro, but again maybe you a from a very wealthy family. Wish you d best.

First of all, #16mil for a 3 yr PhD in the UK? Are you sure?

With current black market exchange rate, that may not pay tuition for 2 yrs in any UK uni.

Please recheck your values.

My answer to your question is a question, sorry: ever heard of anyone who return from a UK PhD and regretted?

Why don't you just travel to Canada or something so you can work and school there at the same time.

In the UK there is no funding, no job while studying and no promise of a job when done.

My advice is simply this: PhD in UK is overrated. You can get the same degree in other European countries and you will be paid at least a 1000 euro monthly and not you paying. Example of such country is Germany, Portugal and Spain. They have English programmes and you don't need to worry. If you have to learn the language then do it.

"Is spending 16million on a PhD"***

Not

"Does....it worth it".

1. Just as others have said, you got your estimates wrong. It's way more expensive.

2. If you would try to get a job there or another developed country, it's a great idea. If you're returning to Nigeria, you had better be a politician's kid.

Those that don't have money will say "it isn't worth it"
Those that have the money will say "it is worth it"
The Optimist will say "It is worth it"
The pessimist will say "how can you even think about that"
.
.
As a realist, I would say this: studying for the PhD should have a reason why and that justifies the intention to spend 16 milli. Besides, 16 million is only an estimate. I spent over 20 million now. The UK educational system is very promising and encouraging and why the expense is overwhelming, the quality of education is second to non. Given that you are in line with your study, and with God on your side obviously, you can actually gain more after the completion of your study. Statistically, a lecturer earns at least £35k and above and the remuneration structure is fab! Now, if you don't intend to go into academia or research study, any employer will value your degree; it comes with a handsome package and a very well due respect. Alternatively, you can start your own firm because you will most definitely have an innovative idea during these 3 years programme undoubtedly,
For me, the money counts but contributing to the general body of knowledge is a bolster.

After getting the certificate, if you work with your profession, would you be able to make N20m in 3 years as salary and other packages?

If no, think twice

There are many European and Asian schools that offer free Tuition/Accommodation scholarship to foreign students for Postgraduate Courses. Search through Google, they usually start the Application around July to December.
Good luck.

Not at all, People are wiser now.

You can go to Germany where schooling is FREE or other schools in Europe which are free.

In Germany, you can get a job easily after you PHD, then get a bluecard while working and get a Permanent Residence after 33 months of Working.
if you learn German language to B2 level you can even get the Permanent Residence after 22 Months of Working.

In UK, you will just dash the money to their Govt.

As they say,If you say education is expensive try ignorance.I have read about some PhD holders in Nigeria driving Dangote's lorries for monthly pay while some ended up as classroom teachers at primary schools. If you have the wherewithal and there are possibilities or prospects of securing well-paid jobs after your PhD programme in UK I believe it worth it.If there are also prospects of working in UK in the course of your study it is also a big plus but if all these are not possible I advise you to invest part of the money in a lucrative business and use some part for your PhD in Nigeria.

you should be looking for scholarships and grants not wasting that money

16 million is a bad investment for a phd.

use some of that money to immigrate to canada and do your phd there, you might even get scholarships
