Hi guys,
I was meant to travel this month to start the summer semester but as it stands now, my flight has been cancelled and the school has decided to move summer classes online.
My question is this, do I defer till fall though I have deferred once before but I don’t think online classes are ideal for me from here.

You should contact your graduate advisor. They’ll advice you better.

Eniolakiite:
Yes if you’re a graduate assistant and you filed your tax returns already

International students who received the stimulus check must have filed their taxes using the form 1040 (this form is meant for resident aliens and citizens). If you haven't passed the substantial presence test as an international student, the correct form for filing your taxes is the form 1040-NR (this is meant for non-resident aliens).

Instead of awaiting, why not do a bit of research yourself. One tip: Use grad cafe to search for your course. Updates usually carry if it was a funded offer or not. That way you can know which school funds or not

I will do as suggested. Many thanks.

Isn't it illegal to file using the form 1040 as an F1 student visa holder?

@TheGrandChemist already said it..."If you haven't passed the substantial presence test as an international student, the correct form for filing your taxes is the form 1040-NR (this is meant for non-resident aliens)." Or 1040-NR-EZ.

Most international students file the wrong tax which has not resulted in any kind issue to some in the past.
But it's not going to be wise at this time to depend on the luck that nothing will spring up later in the future from inappropriate filing of tax. Best thing is to do the right thing (1040-NR and 1040-NR-EZ) to avoid getting in trouble because of $1k+ from education credit and some few extra dollars.

As an F1 student who hasn't passed the substantial presence test (non-resident alien), it is not right to file your tax with the form 1040. Instead, form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ is the right form for that purpose.

Well one can’t be too sure what will happen by fall semester too. I have been wondering how incoming students would get in. It seems they will have to attend online pending when the virus thing is resolved. A friend who applied to school in Canada has also been told to be prepared to take the classes online.

For now, WES wrote that delays may occur for documents that arrived after march 10 because of the virus. One will just have to wait or check out schools that dont require WES.

Every country is experiencing difficulties this time, not just USA. And like no one expected this, one can't predict any country that might be worst hit if something else happens.

Ashirioluwa:
After the covid-19 is over, US might not be a place to go for now. Because everything is upside down. Unemployment hit the highest number in decades. A lot still going to lose jobs after September

As it turns out, if you’re a US taxpayer and you filed for 2018 and 2019 tax returns, and meet certain conditions, you will get the 1200. Attached image is from IRS website.

From the IRS page, international students are not qualified since they file 1040-NR and 10401040-NR-EZ, unless they have wrongly filed their taxe as a resident.

Won't IRS know if you fill the wrong form and not give you your tax returns tho?? And if truly non-resident aliens should not get the stimulus package, how come they are? Many international students got today. USA knows their residents and everyone on each visa. And i think for tax purposes, international students are sometimes classified as residents. It also seems if you pay tax in the US and have SSN and with income less than a particular amount, you will get this covid-19 stimulus check cause that is what is happening which is good because this pandemic is a really bad thing for everyone everywhere.

The thing is IRS process your tax based on the form you submitted, it's the duty of an individual to file the right tax. I have friends that are presently owing IRS up to $2k from 2018 tax returns.
For an international student to qualify as a resident alien for tax purposes, you must have been in the U.S. for 5 years (I am not too sure about this figure). E.g, someone who came into the U.S during Fall 2017 and has been filing tax using form 1040-NR/NR-EZ since then can file form 1040 by 2022.
Don't be too sure about the bolded, even if the U.S. knows the onus is still on you to do right thing. You can't claim ignorance of the law. Does the government want to roast you and you're aiding it by rubbing your body with gas or the governmentwants to help you? I bet you know the answer!
Some guys filed form 1040 (meant for residents) in the past and have successfully adjusted status today, so you might be hearing from them that it doesn't matter what form you submit for your tax. Nobody can tell who will be affected in the future.

"And if truly non-resident aliens should not get the stimulus package, how come they are? Many international students got today."
So far you filed your tax using form 1040 and have your direct deposit set up, you'll get the stimulus package. It's automatic! Whether something will come up in the future from this or not, nobody knows.

Some of this info are new to me tho. I followed my school's guide to file taxes using information they placed on my student account and got what I was supposed to get based on how much they deducted.
And many, a lot of us who are international students got covid-19 stimulus package today. I also kinda heard they gave cause most can't leave to go to their countries to get the benefits there. Anyway, its a great relief during this pandemic especially with how it has vastly affected many people here in the USA. we hope for better days. And I will be waiting to get Buhari stimulus package too smiley

This information is very correct. Also, I think things like this should also be discussed here on this platform. For example, I filed wrongly in 2018 using TURBO TAX. My school had presented Glacier to me free of charge, but Turbo offered better returns than Glacier, so I went for Turbo. It was later I realised that Turbo filed me as a resident instead of NR. I then had to correct my tax filing using form 1040X. A few weeks later, I got a message from IRS directing me on how to pay back the excess. As a piece of advice to who cares, do not file your tax returns using TURBO TAX. Sprintax, Glacier or whatever your school offers you is your best bet.

That’s sad. I remember being warned about that turbo tax. And as you rightly pointed, good to follow school recommendations and steps.
