Again ill correct you, we used to order for Yankee and UK school catalogues back in 2001

Infact i rmbr all the phones i used after that period, Nokia 3250, Sony Ericsson p910i and the likes

In 2005, phones like sendo x, sagem myx 6 and 7 and Samsung d500 series were already common and that's probably the time you know well

Yahoo messenger became common around 2002 when boys used to use what they called Gene to order goods online, particularly PhatFarm and FuBu

I have seen it all, nothing towey u fit tell me around that era

Don't expect genuineness 100, unless you're probably a cultist and need the op to be clearer with his confession so you guys can pounce on him like was done to the other guy years back. ??
Sure, but obvious lies that discredit the story are different from concealing details. If it's about concealing details, he already gave enough details that could be used to track him, so I think the OP was smart enough to use a fiction motivated by his experience, you're only the ones getting confused with the whole thing claiming it's genuine.

You talk true brother.
Another thing then is getting signal. People dey climb mount Everest to see network to call that time. Later they made one phone like that Turaya, which they claim can work anywhere.
Infact it's very good to experience different eras in life, one will keep laughing when reminiscing.
I do believe that's a satelite phone, some people still use it up till today.

We should just focus on the message and forget the story.

You're still saying same thing I said about internet. Yahoo messenger was the popular thing on internet then. And boys do night browsing in cybercafes. Nothing like modem or browsing phones. Most people don't even own or know laptops as desktop computer was the common thing that time with windows 98 or so.

Pls show us the receipt for phone and sim card you bought in 2001 as you claimed.
You are right about the Internet exposure in 2001 though but everything changed when Java and symbian phone was introduced into the Market grin grin

You're now talking the truth. You didn't even buy it for yourself, yet you come here claiming SIM cards and phones were very affordable and common in 2001, just because you were lucky to get them free from someone. Please make research to know how much those phones and SIM cost that time. Some people bought SIM over 40k. And 40k isn't joke that time, those were periods they were selling measure of garri around N15 or thereabout. Even 40K isn't beans as at now, how much more that time.

Brother, buying phone and SIM card no be child play those years. Anyway, I commend your honesty.
you are right once again, it was costly then but that does not give you enough reason to discredit the Op story,

1. He might have changed the timeline to protect himself, it's called Wisdom
2.or he might have been using a Mobile phone then as Claimed, even though it was costly, it was available..

3. Maybe it's even a stolen phone he was even using.

And if I can remember then, the SIM card costliness dropped within 18momths to an affordable price..

Lets forget about issue of phone as I realize many people who were not old enough or born that time to have live experience of how things were, all checked Google and were arguing based on what they saw on Google. Those who were old enough then, couldn't differentiate between 2001/2002/2003 or were twisting things to support their false claims. Even apart from cost of acquiring phones and SIM, network signal was another big problem then, very very limited then. Only few spots had signals, people had to climb and look before getting few bars to call. So then, it's one thing to buy phone, another thing to buy SIM, another problem to have signal to call. Most people who succeeded getting phone end up using it to play game because of signal. So, if anyone claim to be student come here claiming he was in the luxury of his room around 2000/2001 calling his student friend who also had a phone, I'm smart enough to know that little detail is a big lie.
I should stop wasting my time arguing with anyone who claimed using phones was very common in 2001/2002.
The liars and their indomie generation supporters who don't know things can keep fooling themselves
Ok apart from phone, what about school fees scratch card. Do any school own website or produce scratch cards way back in 2000/2001 when internet was still young then?

I'm done arguing with anyone about the issue.

Yes bro, that was quite later. Around 2005 when this forum was created, only very few were able to access this forum on their phones, while majority used cybercafes. Phone browsing was still new and color-phones were just becoming popular. I remember the cheat we used to do then was MTN cheat. mtnloaded@the website you want to access. Little by little, things evolved into what we have today.
Life was quite different back then. I will try not to waste my time anymore arguing with people who don't know what they're talking about

I played pacman tire on Samsung c100 those days. That was the time color-phones were gradually becoming popular. grin.

I think life in the past was better than now. The farther the past was, the simpler and peaceful life was, you see, trying to go advanced and sophisticated is the root of problems.
I always feel our fore fathers enjoyed life most. Although we enjoy some advantages they lacked, but taking peace and simplicity out of life is our undoing.

I don't think OP is the owner of this story. Or he tried mixing his real story with lots of lies. There are lots of contradictions and lies.
From his write up, one could infer that he likely got admitted to uni around 1999 - 2001 and was initiated around one of these years. But the way he kept mentioning 'phones', 'calling his friends with phone', 'ayee guys collecting his school fees scratch card' etc. My question to OP is, where did he see mobile phones and scratch card in 1999 to 2001? Except for the indomie generation who might be young or not yet born that time, we know there's nothing like phones that time, same thing with internet, so why was he mentioning phones and scratch card?
I can keep picking out things and contradictions in his story.
Let me agree with you he got admitted 99 that means he graduated 2005 at the earliest if you add 1 year ASUU strike to it.

GSM came into Nigeria August 2001, through Econet and MTN. Phones and Sim cards were expensive for many students but some had it. By 2002, the price of sims and phones started going down to rates affordable by many students.

Nokia 3310, came out worldwide late 2000 and by 2002 it was the most popular cheap low end phone in Nigeria . Many students had it or they had other cheaper phones. I was a student then so I know. That's a milestone phone for tracking the timeline of cheap phones in Nigeria. The only problem then was per minute billing by GSM operators was still on the high side so students would make calls and cut it quickly or they would flash and text a lot.

So I ask you why should the OP not mention GSM phone calls?

By 2001, 2002, 2003 scratch cards had become common place. Glo came in 2003 and by the time they came, scratch cards and cheap phones were everywhere. To disrupt the market they came with per second billing and that was a game changer.

So I ask you, why won't OP mention scratch cards?

The guy is talking about what happened around 99-2005, if your timeline is correct, so what the heck are you talking about?

The timeline is congruent with his storyline or am I missing something here?

PS: OP may even have graduated even much later than 2005 as a result of delays due to his cult related activities.

I like your analysis and it would make me revert on my promise not to argue anymore.
GSM came, lets say Aug 2001. Everyone heard about it but everything, very newly kicking off, only very few privileged could own Phones and SIMs till that year ended. In 2002, phones were still expensive, all the same more people were buying, but the real issue was that SIM cards were even more expensive than some phones. Lets say you were still able to scale through and get a phone and SIM card, issue of network signal was another big challenge then. Even as at 2003, many places still have limited services. So, which planet in Nigeria was OP when as at 2001, phone was so easy to get for him and his friends, they were also able to buy SIM cards, they were also able to have enough network signals to stay in the leisure of their rooms or any location they were to call one another? Anyway, someone like me is smart enough to read between the lines.

Then, he didn't say MTN recharge card. He said 'School fees sratch card'. Which Nigeria university produces school fees scratch cards in 2001?

Moreover, I was the one who named 2001 to give OP some grace. What he personally said was that he finished 2004. Meaning he most likely got admitted in 1999 or earlier (judging by some of his other posts). And when in 2nd year in 2000, all these started. I can keep picking out things in his post because I read every of his posts with rapt attention.

I like the intention of OP but the unnecessary lies in the stories are obvious which discredited the story, and made impossible for any part of it to be believed as truth or usable to share with others as gospel truth. OP himself can't deny. Only you people turned yourselves to his mouthpieces to defend blindly.

So in essence, I only see his story as a realistic fiction that did justice in orientating our naive teens about evils of cutism. I think that's the most important thing anyway.

2001, if you had a phone as a student you were a big boy or big girl. And yes, big boys and girls had phones in schools as at that time and they would oppress other students with it. What bigger boys were in schools then than these cult boys who were by then veteran big time armed robbers or involved in one shady deal or another? Some of them where even children of the elites or very rich.

GSM companies started by having network coverages in city centres and then spread to the hinterland gradually. Any school located in a city centre would have been covered in 2001.

This is the last time I will respond to you on this issue.

2001? You're only trying hard to defend yourself on this public forum but sincerity is far from your claims.
Lagos, Abuja and maybe PortHarcout were the first places in Nigeria to have network signals maybe till 2002/2003, later when it began to spread slowly to other places.
So even if phones and SIMs were common things affordable by rich students in year 2001 as you claimed, except they stay in those popular places, they won't have access to network to make calls. Moreover OP claimed he was from a poor background, not a son of Elites or very rich parents.

What about the school fees scratch card? Tell us about how your university sold scratch cards to you in 2001. undecided

Some people will just come here to lie anyhow thinking only zombies and Jambites are on NL.

If you don't believe in the Ops story, just exit and stop trying hard to discredit it.

Meanwhile you have been told to stick to the message which you claim you do, then why are you displaying the obvious tact of discrediting the message in itself?

Like you have some sinister motive for doing this, I can't say but it's good to do the right thing by allowing sleeping dogs lie by either continuing with the thread as it is or exit it.
