It's really astonishing the amount of counselling I've had to do for women who have sunken into depression after finding out the gender of their baby - and I've noticed most of these women are pregnant with girls.

The only time I encountered someone unhappy with a male pregnancy, was because she already had 3 boys and was desperate for a change the 4th time round.

Why is such mentality prevalent amongst our women? In fact, the way some of these pregnant women act makes me question if women hate their gender so much that they can't bear to bring in another of their kind into this world.

It's a patriarchal society and in some parts of the country, having a male child is equivalent to having peace and stability in the home for the women.

Look around isnt it obvious.

Why add to the number of growing females with an increase in the decline of values. And besides the Prophesy is with the male child.

No matter how hard feminists try to sell the idea that women are game. For every womans good consider having a make child first.

i think it's due to pressure from their husbands and the society at large.

While we know that the husband is responsible for determining the sex of the child. If you are African lady, for your peace of Mind. Do what u can to ensure u have a make child on the first few attempt. Many men are staying married today just because of their sons.

Away from that as the world goes to an end and that prophecy of 7 women to 1 man occurs. Many women will end up unhappy and bitter. So why add to that number ?

Men have thier struggles too... and their is to hustle.

It is because of the society and how they have been conditioned to reason whike growing up.
And when married their husbands and his family in extension mount pressure on their wives to give birth to a male child for them so as to continue their so called legacy and lineage.Who the thing help I nor know.I think there are exceptions though not common I know of a man who wanted 3 kids and the wife had 3 girls and wanted to try for a boy.The husband said no that 3 was 3 and that he was okay with it and did not care. The wife was just pressuring herself and they just have 3 daughters.

Hmnnn.... I guess she does not want surprises later in Life. I think some women see male children like an insurance policy to a man's estate.

My sad observation is a huge part of that pressure comes from women in the husband's family.

What century do you live in?
Is the man complaining or don't you know that females can inherit their father's property?

1) Asking questions you already know the answer to.
2) women who are ardent foot soldiers in ensuring such misogyny thrives will also tell you that there’s nothing like oppression grin

Here we go again..
Why not shut up if you've got nothing reasonable to contribute. "misogyny this, misogyny that" lipsrsealed

You’re one of the foot soldiers of misogyny she spoke about.

It’s an undisputed fact that patriarchy/misogyny still thrives because women enable/tolerate it knowingly and unknowingly.

Your small circle isn't a good sample size to depict the heart desires of over 100 million Nigerian women. Most women will want a change after having two or more of a particular gender. For example, after two boys majority will desire a girl, same way after two girls they will desire a boy. Another issue is family pressure from the husband and inferiority complex on her part but generally many want both genders.

1. They feel it 'cements' their place in their 'husband' s home and access to his wealth/inheritance

2. They have a better relationship with their husbands.

3. Their in-laws (read women in their husbands' families) pressurize them for male children.

4. They want to be served as MILs in future.

Times are changing and people are becoming more content with whatever sex of children they have especially as people are now having just max 2 kids.

Am not married yet but I think most women are of the impression that a male child would make their husbands happier, and since most women want to please their husbands they prefer to have a male child.

Secondly, it's generally harder to get a male child as female eggs swim faster or survive better (not sure am right) so they prefer to get a male child and get it out of the way.

As enlightened as I am anytime I see a woman with three or four only female children sometimes I feel sorry for them honestly, dont really know why I think this way even though I know deep down it doesnt matter.

shocked

It's so sad that a fellow woman can say this. Do you have male kids? If so, does this make you feel superior to other women who don't?

Tradition/culture which I believe is a major factor

Some cultures make having a male child a do or die affair, wife has no place in husbands home if she doesn't have a male child, when the hubby dies the uncles swoop over everything because there's no heir. angry

The extent to which women married to such cultures go to have a male child is something else because they believe all will be lost.

Most women may not mind not having a male after having the no of children they desire but when they think of the future and tradition they go all out- fasting and prayer on the mountain sex selection etc.

I still cant wrap my head around it, different threads in this section showing women's agony on their inability to produce a male child.

A woman in my church had 5 girls anytime they ask for those looking for the fruit of the womb she will be the first to run out, last last she had a boy as the 6th see the way we were all rejoicing because we know her feet is now firmly rooted in her husbands house.

The 2nd lady told me point blank that shes happy she had a boy as her 2nd child because 'for my place if you never born boy you never start'

Nothing wrong in wanting variety most couples desire to have boys and girls under normal circumstances and may not even mind if they have just one sex but pressure from the village people and the tradition of the husbands place is always the issue.
