Listen, in US, Malaysia, Dubai, China.....these people have buildings reaching up into the clouds. They never collapse.

Why do we build 4 storey and 10 storey structure and they are all collapsing two per month?

What the fvck is going on?

Fake and unqualified engineers coupled with compromised system

There are State town planning and Safety commission officials who are suppose to run checks on the building before it even got to decking level, the sit in their offices, collect bribes to approve plans, and only visit your site to write 'Stop Work' when you haven't bribed them.

With the cheap/fake cement in Nigeria today, and the complicity of the Federal Government in refusing to investigate poor quality DANGOTE cement, nobody should be allowed to build more than 4 floors anywhere in Nigeria!

RIP to the dead. Those that still buy the sandbagged DANGOTE cement should continue to risk the human sacrifice! All the federal government agencies need to do is randomly select these DANGOTE cement bags and do quality tests on them. But they will never do it!

Nigeria is a human wasteland and the government doesn't care as long as the corrupt cement maker settles them well !

Nigeria is a SH*THOLE country!

BUSINESSARENAA:
Who possibly approved the plan for eight story building?

Was pilling done on the foundation?

Which government agency was monitoring such a massive project while it was ongoing?

Who was checking the columns, the reinforcements and the concrete mixture to ensure it confirm with standards?

When we have answer to the above questions, we will understand where the problem started.

This is Nigeria not America, nothing is working here. Their own is to collect bribe and sit in AC offices with their pot belly....

For my MSc dissertation, my project topic was causes, effects of project failure. I can categorically tell you that structures don't just collapse. Technology has gone to far now for us to still see ground structures collapse. From my thesis, majority of the cause of project failure in Nigeria is corruption. Stemming from procurement method used, the materials involved, the use of non professionals. This report even says some of the 'quacks" noticed the pillars were not enough. Well I've designed a 5-building with just 8 pillars (columns) and ground floor having parking space. So it's not always about number of pillars, but the strength (number of reinforcements) and sizes of each pillar. In saying this, we have so many good thesis but after we defend this, they are thrown to the store books. No one uses them, so why do we research, it's become a routine just a criteria to get a certificate. I wish we get it in this country I really wish

Africa keeps basking in mediocrity and poor standards in the 21st century. Oyibos have been building high rise buildings and skyscrapers since the 18th century, and I have never read or heard any of those constructions demolished during or post building. Africa is really under a curse.

Most of these collapse started in recent years probably a decade and half ago but prior to that 4 storey buildings were erected in their thousands in Aba and Onitsha with no news of collapse recorded. Most Nigerians believe the quality of cement is playing a major role in the recent collapses

I am very shocked. No month goes by now without a building collapse somewhere.

Are they not mixing the cement well?

Someone has to be held responsible. We are loosing an average of 15 people to each collapse, and in a year we get about 20 collapses. This is not good.

Not just quality of cement, the Quality of IRON reinforncement Rods, is also a major factor.
The Iron Rods sold and used for buildings today, are made from recycled bits of iron and the process of melting, separation and remolding into iron rods have become seriously compromised due to greed.

Another issue is that most builders dont stick to the ratio of Concrete Mix, due to greed and Ignorance.!
I was doing a project last year and the builders were asking me whether it is ten storey building l want to build that l am sticking to the proper mix ratio, to them, it is a waste of cement.
But when l finished the two storey building, we needed to Chisel a place near the door frame so an Iron door can squeeze-in properly, the Concrete column damaged no less that five steel Chisels before a small dent could be made on it. grin grin
The Concrete was almost as hard as Steel.
