1) The Historical backgrounds and worldviews of people in the core North is DIFFERENT from people in the South and these are molded by the religion of ISLAM.

2) The Legacy the the Uthman dan Fodio's Jihard.


The Jihard sought to correct some perceived evils in the various Hausa kingdoms by toppling the ruling Hausa Dynasties and establish an egalitarian community in which every body will be equally and justifiably treated under the banner Islam.

3) To achieve num-2 above, the Fulani Jihadists stressed Religious (Islamic) identity over all other identies, including ethnicities.

4) Politics of Colonial Nigeria. Those who have lived together under the Sokoto Caliphate practicing similar (Islamic) culture and inter-marriages for about 100 years before Colonial rule were regarded by the British Colonial Government as one homogeneous unit- the Hausa-Fulanis.

5) There are examples of similar different but similar ethnic groups/Towns being regarded as one unit (of administration) during the colonial rule e g Ogori-Mangogo, Ikwerre-Igbo, Sango-Otta.

Recently, I have also seen some people from Ilorin referring to themselves as 'Yoruba-Fulanis'

Again, I appreciate your contributions. I agree with your point about sharing the same geographical space, very solid point that makes sense, especially relative to my example of other southern tribes mixing up. You're very correct, they don't share same lands, so it is say easier for them to choose to be separate entities. So let me focus my observations on the North itself. Like I said before I believe you are right and everything you explained is true and correct. But I still feel there is more to this bond, I think it goes deeper than that and so far no northerners I know have been able to come up with an explanation beyond this same area you have covered. Sometimes, I feel they know more but are hiding the info, like maybe it is meant to be a secret for only hausa-fulani to know about, just an opinion though, I'm not saying that's a fact, but sometimes it feels that way. The question you may wonder is why I feel, or why do I feel there is more to this bond than is being revealed? I will answer like this, many years ago, I used to think Hausas and Fulanis were the only tribe in the North, until whether by chance or whatever, for the first and only time in my life, I dated an Hausa girl from Kaduna. Well, at first I thought she was Hausa, like because she didn't look Fulani. Because she was the fleshy type, so first time i saw her and heard her accent i thought she was hausa, cuz fulanis are usually the slender, slim types. Sorry I don't mean this as an offense or abuse. Anyway, after some months of dating, (very sweet girl, well behaved, coolheaded, respectful, submissive and stuff like that, and very very neat), she told me she wasn't actually Hausa by tribe even though she speaks Hausa. I was shocked to my bone cuz I automatically thought she was Hausa prior to her revelation. She told me she was from Kafanchan area in Kaduna but they were not Hausas, can't remember the actual tribe she said she was. And then she was like there are plenty different tribes in the North, just like we have in the south but the only difference is majority of them speak Hausa, like it is the common language, so most people think all of them are Hausas. So now back to my original question, in this case where you have many other northern tribes whom also intermarry with Hausa ands Fulani, who also share similar culture and share the same geographic location, how come it is only hausa-fulani that formed the single unit identity, why don't Northerners say Hausa-Nupe or Kanuri-fulani etc, how come it is only hausa-fulani that merge together in this way? This is the major reason I have this feeling that the bond goes beyond your explanation. I don't know, maybe it is an exaggeration on my part, but just sometimes it crosses my mind as to why that unique unity is singled out.

Hope you guys can educate the fulani herdsmen to shun voilence. Nigerians are tired of primitive actions which is not of this present civilization. I hardly see any of you guys condemning their actions and you expect people to see you differently.

Agreed, but you guys can do more in stopping it. If not for their men, their women are quite beautiful. But it will take a very long time before Nigerians will accept them as a loving people. The present leadership now is not even helping them. In other countries, if one citizen dies, the whole nation will be on standstill, but here people die in hundreds and nothing happens. Even soldiers die aimlessly. Nigeria will be a better place if their elites are cautioned.

Hausas are two centuries backward. I don't have a problem with them developing because they have a lot of catching up to do with the South.
