There’s a way to go about these things. God is Wise.
Yes, it is true that we’ll be more knowledgeable than our parents in certain areas, but we won’t in entirety be wiser than our parents so much so that they should be outrightly disobeyed.

Wisdom is profitable to direct. If you find that your parents are asking you to do something that’s not the best, and you know better, calmly explain things to them. If you’re not succeeding, involve someone else who they respect, to make them see reasons. This is especially when you’re still under their roof.

You can’t just go about saying your parents are ignorant and should be obeyed only if they are wise. That statement in itself shows that you are not even wise.

If in a case where they refuse all the appeals, what will the individual then do?

As much as we try to respect our parents, it should be noted that atimes they are actually IGNORANT... The issue with it is that people tend to twist it in various ways just so it doesn't sound offensive, but thats just the truth

My parents were not ignorant. In fact all they ever taught is still guiding and keeping me up till today even though they are no more.

African mentality is that you should respect your parents no matter what because they sacrified all they had for you.
This is a tactics used to Guilt Shame you whenever you don't agree with parents

Lol, duhhhhhh. Before nko??
If you bring a child into this world then you must sacrifice to keep it alive.
It's not rocket science
If you don't want to sacrifice then don't go and insert your dick and give birth to kids.
You don't owe your parents for taking care of you..
That is a duty they both agreed to do once they decided to have kids

If I request for a puppy, of course I have to get ready to feed and raise the puppy.
It is my responsibility and duty since I requested for it.
You can never achieve anything if you cling too much on your parents advice
They are biased on many many levels
Some are blinded by doctrine
They had no access to Internet and a large amount of information unlike us.
That is why White people are far ahead of us. They allow their kids to explore life and in doing so these kids become their best selves with great potential to the community and the world.

Well said bro.

This is so wrong, never you refer to your parents as ignorant! No matter the circumstance. If you feel an opinion is wrong, the onus rests on you to decide, but never berates your parents. This is the effect of Western corruption and the worst part is that Africans abuse every civilization.

That's why you should hustle on your own and look away from there money.
That you focused on business doesn't mean you will succeed. All still dey for God hand.

But one of the personal lesson I learnt is you have to use wisdom in having scuffle with your parents lest it turns to dishonoring them.
The Bible enjoins us to honour thy father and mother that it may be well with thee that your days may be long. Your success and long life on earth is tied to honoring your parents.

You can disagree with them but never dishonor your parents or hold a grudge against them. It never ever ends well.
ya thanks, I won't dishonour them, I just want to create a path for myself, a path that I can happily follow and not the one they forced on me.
Las Las, nothing guarantee success, all of dem deh God hand, so it's better to do what makes u happy and fail than do what doesn't make u happy and still fail

thanks man, I saw it. It was a motivational message.
Parents should allow us choose our path, reading ur story, I remembered a guy who his father was hellbend on forcing him to study medicine, cut the long story short, he couldn't make it and he ended up taking his own life when the pressure on him became unbearable.

That's bad

That's where wisdom come to play...

Don't refuse them outrightly to their face but when you depart you do the right thing

Just like when your boss instructs on the way a task is to be carried out which you are certain is a wrong approach. You don't go about schooling him in order to expose his ineptitude and enthrone your ideas.

You just need to apply the right approach and give him feedback on the success of the execution of that task without insisting you didn't get the task done not following his guidelines

Wisdom!

The Bible says obey your father and mother so ye shall live long.

What if you're father is telling you to do something you know is very wrong
Will you obey him or disobey him?

What if your mother supports your father in every negative thing he tells you to do?

Some parents are not wise and are easily manipulated by pastors and imams.

I think you should only Respect your parents if they are WISE

you teach them what is right or ignore it or both. But it is extremely rare that your parents will ask you to do something wrong by law.

There's a stage one gets to in adult life that u don't just gullibly obey everything your parents tell u, especially if u have valid and logical reasons not to.
But one has to explain to them in a respectful manner so as not to offend them.

My grandfather was a very rich but illiterate chief in abeokuta, he never believed in education so he instructed all his children to go into farming and not waste time with school but my dad was the only one that successfully disobeyed him which got him disowned but my dad fled to Lagos, slept on the streets/uncompleted buildings, finished school, started working as a labourer, the owner of one of the house he was doing bricklayer for noticed he always study during break time and got him employed at the airport, got scholarships to further his studies in London and later became the breadwinner of the family.

grin

I hear a lot of these stories and comments above and below that seem to indicate that charting a course that led to a better life in the eyes of the explorer justifies the course.

I beg to differ with the assumption of success based on a differing path with perhaps some empiric evidence.

Who says such fellow will not have been more successful if he had not made those choices and set out along those paths in the first place. The very definition of success can be beclouded by sentiment when you feel you have escaped something.

By your definition a London education leading to the breadwinner status is success. Who ultimately says he could not have been better than that staying on that farm.

In life you can NEVER ABSOLUTELY TELL. That is why every person must obtain a neutral, independent opinion, presented him by an unbiased party as to what success is and is not.

I know lots of people that fight with parents more end up being happy and successful in life.
Do you know that if you take their advice and become miserable later in life. They will attribute it to devil blocking your progress. It's an unending loop of had I know, what if, and regrets.
But if you go against them and prove them wrong and become successful. They will be the ones to boast about you nonstop.
That is to show you the level of bias that most parents have.

Even the Bible says " age doesn't translate to wisdom" calling someone ignorant doesn't imply any insult, it just means that they aren't knowledgeable in a particular area.

Sad and bitter as it may sound, but if there is one thing that is stopping African youths from discovering their true self's and exploring their imaginative senses then it is the African parent especially mothers. they are just too protective for their own good.
From your name, to the schools you attend, to the courses you study, to the woman you marry, to how and where you choose to live your life , they want to decide everything for you. This is so suffocating and actually hinders their children from discovering their self and learning about life along the way.
As an example, tell me which African parent will allow their 18year old son or daughter to leave home, rent in another place and live their lives free. But this is actually very crucial in developing character in a person. the feeling of being free and alone, to do whatever your heart chooses. The concept of leaving home is so misunderstood here that if you do it, you are labeled a rogue child, a tout, or even a criminal. No one seems to understand that you are just trying to carve your own path in life, you just want to be independent of anyone's opinions.
Finally, I would say that sometimes it's actually good to go against parents and society as a whole. You have a brain of your own, use it to make your own decisions in life. Live your life free, don't burden your self with anyones opinions. The only thing is that we should be considerate in whatever we do. We should try to show some level of concern to our parents even when rebelling against them. And if you believe in God, then never forget prayers.

Uncle, ur English too much abeg grin
When my father was in primary school Nigeria's agricultural sector was still booming and was known world wide, by the time he was in secondary school Nigeria was already starting to concentrate on the oil sector, as the only educated he could predict the nearest future, all his brothers and sisters proceeded to own lands etc but the economy eventually took the turn he predicted and they all sold their lands and went bankrupt so you tell me if his story would have been the same if he had not insisted on completing his education.
