This is a topic that bothers me a lot. The sexist way in which the bible portrays women as inferior beings and property of men. I have had these discussions with women over time and it seems most of them shy away from this topic.
This has made me wonder if they(women) have really ever sat down to read the bible or if they have read the bible,do they really comprehend what they have read?
In this thread I will not for once go out of the bible. I will quote sexist verses that portray women as inferior beings and everyone is free to look up these chapters and verses for themselves.

With regards to the scripture text above, Ephesians 2 v.15, the word ‘Abolish’ is used. Abolish, a verb (attached to an object), means to “formally put to an end to (a system, practice, or institution).” Its etymology is from the Old French word, aboliss, from the Latin word, abolere meaning ‘destroy’ (Oxford Dictionary of English: 2010).

The Amplified Bible adopts the use of the word; annul, from the noun, annulment; The Fifth edition of the Oxford Dictionary of Law defines the word annulment as:

1. A declaration by the court that a marriage was never legally valid.
2. The cancellation by a court of a bankruptcy order, which occurs when it considers that the
debtor was wrongly made bankrupt.

3. The setting aside of legislation or other action by the European Court of Justice.

What then is the ‘object’ that was abolished? It is the Law of Commandment contained in The Ordinances. The ordinances are also known as the Law of Moses or the Mosaic Law. Apostle Paul also refers to it as “the Letter” (2 Corinthians 3:6) or “the law” several times. This Law is different from the Law of God which is found in Exodus chapter 20.

You may ask, “What is the difference between these Laws”? Firstly, the Law of Moses was written by the hands of Moses (Deut. 3:9, 31, 24) while the Law of God was written by the finger of God Himself (Exodus 31:18). The Law of Moses was temporal and ceremonial in nature: they regulated the Levitical priesthood, sacrifices, rituals, meat offerings and drink offerings, etc. It had in its confines laws that regulated the society; laws of food, of purity, of morality, and instructions on whom to install as a king when Israel demands for one.

The Law of commandments contained in the ordinances, the Mosaic Law, are bound between Deuteronomy 4:48 and Deuteronomy 28:68; we see ordinances concerning prohibited food, divorce, tithes, cities of refuge, leprosy, first fruits, etc. This Law, which was written in a book (Josh. 8:31, 2 Chron. 35:12) was placed outside the holy ark of covenant (Deut. 31:26) and deteriorated with time (Josh. 8:32); in contrast, the Law of God was written on a stone (Exod. 31:18, Exod. 32:16) by God Himself, placed within the ark, under the mercy seat (Exodus 40:20), and it endures forever (Luke 16:17, Psalm 119:160).

The clearest indication that these two Laws are separate is given in the Book of Daniel, Chapter 9:11 (when Daniel was praying to Jehovah):

We have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in His laws, which He set before us by His servants the prophets. Yes, all Israel has transgressed Your law, and has departed so as not to obey Your voice; therefore the curse and the oath written in the Law of Moses the servant of God have been poured out on us, because we have sinned against Him. (Dan. 9:10-11, NKJV)

Other differences between the two laws are listed below:

God’s Law, the Ten Commandments, was audibly spoken by God to the hearing of all Israel; Exodus 19:9 says, “And the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I come to you in the thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with you, and believe you forever.” (NKJV).

The Law of Moses was not spoken audibly to the hearing of all who were in Israel but to Moses, to whom the Law was given in private. (Exodus 21:1)


God’s Law was commanded by God Himself on Mount Sinai [Deut. 4:13-14, 2 Kings 21:8]

The Law of Moses was commanded by Moses [Deut. 31: 24-26, 2 Kings 21:8].

The Law of God was written by God Himself (Exod. 31:18, Exod. 32:16).

The Law of Moses was written by Moses (2 Chron. 35:12).

The Law of God was rewritten by God Himself (Jer. 31:33).

The Book of the Law of Moses was rewritten by men (Deut. 17:18, Josh. 8:32)

The Law of Moses made nothing perfect (Heb. 7:19).

The Law of the Lord is perfect (Psa. 19:9, James 1:25) and makes perfect (Psa. 19:7).

The Law of Commandments contained in the ordinances, the Law of Moses, was hostile to all men and women; and was against all; and curses all men under its influence (Col. 2:14, Deut. 31:26, Gal. 3:13).

The Law of God does not grieve anyone and it blesses (Psa. 119:1, 1 John 5:3).

The Law of Commandments contained in the ordinances is carnal and is termed “The Carnal Law” (Heb. 7:16, Romans 7:25).

The Law of God (Romans 7: 25) is termed “Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:2) or “Grace” (Romans 6:14-15).

The Law of Commandments contained in the ordinances, the Mosaic Law, kills (2 Cor. 3:6).

The Law of God gives life (2 Cor. 3:6, Prov. 3:1-2).


The Law of Commandments contained in the ordinances justifies no man (Gal. 3:11, Romans 2:27) and judges no one (Col. 2:16).

The Law of God judges all men (Jam. 2:10-12).

The Law of Commandments contained in the ordinances was made for the unrighteous, lawless, ungodly, sinners, killers, whoremongers, homosexuals, thieves, liars, blasphemers, lawbreakers etc. (1 Tim. 1:10 – 11).

This law made for sinners was also called the Law of sin and death (Romans 7:8, 23, 25; Romans 8:3).

On the other hand, the Law of the Spirit in Christ Jesus, the Law of God, was made for the just and righteous (Titus 3:4-7).

The Law of Commandments contained in the ordinances condemns everyone as a lawbreaker (James 1:9); its purpose is to reveal sin and condemn the sinner (Romans 3:19-20).

But, there is no condemnation to all submissive to the Law of God (Romans 8:1).

The Law of Moses is termed “Bondage” (Gal.4:24, Gal.5:1).

The Law of God is termed “The Law of Liberty” (James 1:25, 2:12).

Why was the Law of Commandments contained in the Ordinances added to the Law of God, you may ask?

Galatians 3:19 says, “What then was the purpose of the Law? It was added [later on, after the promise, to disclose and expose to men their guilt] because of transgressions and [to make men more conscious of the sinfulness] of sin; and it was intended to be in effect until the Seed (the Descendant, the Heir) should come, to and concerning whom the promise had been made. And it [the Law] was arranged and ordained and appointed through the instrumentality of angels [and was given] by the hand (in the person) of a go- between [Moses, an intermediary person between God and man].” (Amplified Bible, Classic Edition)

This text shows that the Law of Commandments contained in the ordinances was supplementary; it was added to the Law of God due to the wickedness of the children of Israel; and its edict was to be in effect till the seed of Abraham was revealed.

Concerning the ordinance of divorce; the seed, Christ Jesus (Gal.3:16), said in Matthew 19:7-8: They say unto him, why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so (KJV). In verse 9, Christ raises an objection to the Law of Moses (governing the Jews only) and enunciates the Law of God to all men – Jews and Gentiles, concerning divorce: The Legislation of Moses was a deviation (though a concession (with the right intention) due to the decadence in the hearts of the Jews) from the eternal standard of righteousness embodied in the Law of God; it wasn’t God’s design for marriage since men sprung into existence, and Christ re-establishes the original law – the Law of God; thereby, revealing the civic yet temporary nature of the Mosaic Law.

Many problems we have either as Christians or Athiest or opportunists is this: we don’t read especially as black people.

Now, Kobojunkie, there is a very well known biblical narrative example of exactly what Funaki advanced about women being criminalized and the man going scot free for a mutually committed offence

Fair enough, the woman caught in the "adultery act" doesn't have a name mentioned to her, right? Hmm, but have you ever thought, why doesnt the woman have a name? Also, why wasn't a man caught in the act with her or why wasnt there, a man caught in the act with her brought forward also?

Well, this whole matter smells fishy, and so, simply points out to the fact that, this was a set up, to get Jesus, as the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees were a wicked and desperate lot, who have been running out of patience with Jesus and so an innocent, home alone woman, was dragged out of her bed to the "market square" and deliberately made to look guilty for a not real and present sin.

The adultery charge against her was an invention by the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, created in order to deceive. This is why there is no and/or was no man was caught in the act. It, altogether and all along was a fictitious adultery act she committed. The teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, fabricated all this, based it on false information, and so this woman was falsely accused of doing something wrong that has a punishment of death by stoning. This all just done, in the quest to trap Jesus, get Him into trouble, a dilemma, vicious circle and/or in a tough nut to crack situation.

The teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, with stones in their hands to ready to unleash, eagerly waiting Jesus' judgement, obviously were saying amongst themselves, "He is not going to say she hasnt sin, would He" and "or is He going to now", they probably thought too.

The teachers of religious law and the Pharisees, believed they have got Jesus in a tight corner and/or spot, that is not easy to escape from and that they have given Jesus a difficult John 8:5 question and perplexing problem He wouldnt be able to resolve. This was a practice session for the teachers of religious law and the Pharisee, as they later and eventually became very skilled and proficient at setting people up, on trumped up charges and be sentenced to death, that similar, in the end, was done to Jesus too.

Even if there was a man caught in the imaginary adultery act, isnt it ironic and typical that he was allowed to escape and so be let off the hook and noose. Anyway, Jesus being all-knowing, all-wise, all-seeing saw through their whole charade, fraud and monkey busines, so no harm came on the woman and the rest is now history because God always has the back of the defenceless

This was a lot more nastier than it looks when looked at only at the surface, because there really was not offence or crime committed. The woman was fitted up, as in, meaning, she was set up for something that never happened. This is why a man was not available to present and bring forward, as evidence, just as she was.
The woman, based on her apparent well known past, was dragged forward before Jesus, on a trumped up charge of having committed a non-existent adultery. Jesus saw through the web of lies and the rest is history that the woman was let go unharmed.

If you are referring to the woman who was caught in the act of adultery, it appears she was indeed guilty and Jesus knew of her guilt. Following their own laws, they were ready to put the woman to death right there and then.
I suspect Jesus invoked the law of Sin and Death, and the possible guilt that each one of them carried, in getting them all to drop their stones and walk away.

Jesus and his disciples encountered at least 5000 people that we are told of in the gospels, I doubt mentioning her name would have made the story any different than we have it

It is not ironic or non-typical in those days that the male sinners were not subjected to the same punishment. I mean you only need to read throught the 613 statutes of the old covenant to understand that women were no better than property or slaves according to those old traditions and so it is no surprise that the woman the only one dragged out to be punished.
