Hello nairalanders I need you all help... I suddenly lost my sense of smell and taste about 3days ago.... I am not having any chronic catarrh or any nasal problems... What could be the cause of this please? Now whatever I eat don't have taste in my mouth, even if a house is burning I can't smell it too... Please help me on how to get rid of this ailment... Who else has experience this? I need your advice please

This is a covid 19 symptom. Please go check yourself. It happens to many cases

MrBigiman:

Please dont go to any hospital as these could be mild covid symptoms, and going into a hospital may help spread the infection. Rather if you are not short of breath, and having to high fever, then do self isolate for 1week. Ensure you keep your distance from close members of your household, and ideally they should self isolate also for 2weeks, or for 1week from when they start experiencing symptoms themselves.

Loss of taste and smell at this critical period is covid until proven otherwise.

Cheers

How can i get admitted by NCDC? my short breath seems to be getting worse

Any contact with someone with covid?, any travel history? Any cough or fever, is the shortness of breath both when you sit and when you walk?, and hope it's not out of panic also? Also if you use a good device worth checking your observations and oxygen saturation just to make sure you are not significantly I'll already.

If you feel worried at all and unable to cope with your symptoms, it's best you give NCDC a ring and follow their advice. I am not so sure how it plays out with them I am afraid. However worth giving them a call.

What state are you located in? Have you been able to reach the NCDC in your state yet?
Do you have any pre-existing conditions like Asthma, Diabetes, Heart Problems, etc.?

No travel history.

I normally find that first question funny. How do we identify someone that is positive? Nigeria is exposed already and many people have the virus walking around you.

Yes Short Breath happens whether sitting or walking.

I'll look out for the oxygen devicetest .

Thanks a lot bro.

I hope you have a face mask. Transport yourself kia-kia to the nearest NCDC hospital. Why? Because that breathing problem could escalate before you know it. I wish you the best on your recovery.

Waiting for ncdc is just wasting of precious time. If I should get any symptom of covid19, i would transport myself to Yaba centre and will be there until I'm tested.

If they should fail to conduct a test me, I would broadcast it in all social media networks.

What are they doing with billions of naira allocated for that purpose if not to conduct test.

Facebook, twitter, nairaland and other blogs are there to tarnish ncdc officials if they fail to carry out their duty. At least local and international communities will see what they really are

When you needed help you got hundreds of replies but now persons are asking you questions and you can't take time to reply back vividly and sometimes you do not reply at all.

Typical Nigerian... Anyway I have my reasons for asking you these questions. You may feel better now but it's best you worry about the people you are infecting which we do not know until you get tested and be free of all doubt.

Don't make evil knowingly... Go get tested. Covid19 is not a death sentence.

I lost my sense of smell and taste too just 2 days ago.

It started after a mild catarrh, slight headache n fever.

I have taken Amoxil and paracetamol.

The fever and headache has gone but still can't smell even when my nose is free

I have inhaled vapor from a boiling water,
I regained it and lost it again later.

Any suggestions?

I understand you believe you are recovered now. But loss of sense of smell and taste are not regular symptoms of CATARRH either. We are not here telling you to go get tested because we are primarily worried just about your person. We are also worried about the many people who may have come in contact with you while you were infected, even before you noticed your symptoms.
Testing does not only serve to help you as a person, it also helps those who have been around you get contacted for testing, in addition to helping paint a better picture of the spread of this disease in your community. All this is to help develop data that we hope in the near future will aid in bettering your healthcare system.

For example, you reported this case on Sunday, it is friday, you claim to be better. Would it not had been better if you had a test center not too far from your home where you could have more easily gotten the test you needed, and had your mind cleared up about what this was many days before now? Obvioiusly yes, but instead you had to suffer the nightmare of not knowing, for many days more than you should. To prevent a recurrence, and to have the facts in your case as well, testing remains the absolute best thing you can do, whether you believe you are recovered or not.

Head's up, many of the covid-19 cases experience a relapse after an initial recovery from symptoms. So, please continue to isolate yourself until you are over the 14-day mark and are at least 5 days in the clear without symptoms of any kind.

Go get tested please. If it is the one contribution you are able to make to better your communities and lives even during this pandemic, please do it and do it safely. From my understanding, the test is at no cost to you, so what have you got to loose?

Nigeria's isolation centers are rapidly earning reputations as little more than concentration camps where captives are starved. Check out this lady's complaint.

U saying this as if getting tested in Nigeria is easy. I called NCDC number, wasnt going tru. I tried their whatsapp no, after much questioning and holds they said they will get back to me. A doctor eventually called me the next day, asked me several questions (same as the initial person i spoke to). He eventually asked if i have shortness of breath and i said no. He said they will get back to me but i have not heard from them since last week Thursday. Since im better now, ive decided to forget the whole ish. My only concern now is that 2 people in my house are now down with malaria, and one of them is coughing.
