I hope you are keeping safe and well. We understand that because of the current COVID-19 crisis you, your family and friends may have lots of questions about what you can expect as you commence your postgraduate university life in the UK. Therefore, as a valued applicant with the University of Derby, I would like to update you on our plans for the 2020/21 academic year.

I am pleased to say that it is our intention to start the next academic year, as planned, on Monday 21 September when our University Welcome and Induction programmes commence, ahead of teaching starting on Monday 28 September. There will be a small number of programmes that will have different start dates and if this applies to you, we will contact you further about this in the coming weeks.

Planning for your first term

Although we would very much like to be able to welcome you on to campus early in the new term – and while we are continuing to make plans that would enable this to happen – we also need to be realistic in saying that it is not currently possible to provide absolute guarantees. We anticipate social distancing measures are likely to be in place for some time in the UK, so are planning for a number of scenarios. These range from a full campus-based experience to a fully remote model of teaching and learning, and hybrid versions of these two approaches.

Our commitment to you

There is clearly a great deal of uncertainty around the world at the moment, and universities in the UK are no different to any other organisation in having to navigate our way through this challenging period in our history. However, I can promise you two things.

Firstly, I can be absolutely clear that all decisions we make will place a clear priority on the health, safety and well-being of our staff and students. We will be implementing strict hygiene processes, following scientific and World Health Organisation (WHO) advice, including ensuring that everyone can socially distance.

We have already shown, when Covid-19 first appeared in the UK, that we can move quickly to support and isolate students who may have come into contact with the disease. Our International Student Centre was in constant contact with our international students, offering advice and guidance. We will continue to provide this service.

Secondly, that whatever learning environment we are able to deliver to you, we will not compromise on the quality of experience and opportunities that made you choose Derby in the first place. You will benefit from our strong background in delivering online learning, as highlighted by some of our current undergraduate students who switched to blended learning when the lockdown came into place in March.

In short, we want to welcome you on to what will be your campus as soon as we can. We want you to enjoy our outstanding facilities and vibrant city. We want you to fully immerse yourselves in University life and everything it has to offer. But, above all, we want you to be safe and well, and I hope you understand that we will prioritise that over everything else.

Our University’s important work

In the meantime, I hope you will share our pride in the work our University is doing to support the national fight against Covid-19. Our Derby campus is currently home to an National Health Service ‘hot hub’ providing assessments for people with symptoms of the virus, our Nursing students have volunteered to work on the frontline, and we have provided a wealth of essential kit and equipment to local hospitals.

Staying in touch

We will update you further in due course. In the meantime, do not hesitate to let us know if you have questions or concerns with which we can assist, or that will inform the plans we are making for September, as your views are extremely important to us.

You had better have patient till July like how so many people in this forum have said.

By July, all schools and UK government will have given clear decision.

All schools are trying hard to lure students to pay deposit to hook them. Be in control and do not be dependent on them.

If you pay your deposit and do not come, your money has gone with no refund.

This is a mind game.

But the deadline for payment to secure your admission is still the same.
This is frustrating and confusing.

Personally, I am waiting for July to make a final decision and no university can pressurize me into parting with a kobo. Cambridge University have clearly expressed there will be no in-person classes for their 2020/2021, so anyone going for the University clearly know what to expect.

Now, this is getting depressing.

RalphJean:
Cambridge University has become the first UK institution to announce it is moving all lectures online until summer 2021.

https://www.lbcnews.co.uk/uk-news/cambridge-university-announced-move-to-hold-all-le/

The university said "given that it is likely that social distancing will continue to be required, the University has decided there will be no face-to-face lectures during the next academic year."

Tutors have been told that lectures will be held virtually, including live-streams. However, the institution still plans to hold seminars, work shops and small group-based learning in person with "strict social distancing" in force.

A Cambridge spokesman told LBC News: “The University is constantly adapting to changing advice as it emerges during this pandemic. Given that it is likely that social distancing will continue to be required, the University has decided there will be no face-to-face lectures during the next academic year.
"Lectures will continue to be made available online and it may be possible to host smaller teaching groups in person, as long as this conforms to social distancing requirements.

"This decision has been taken now to facilitate planning, but as ever, will be reviewed should there be changes to official advice on coronavirus.”

Alice Benton, the university's head of education services, told student news paper Varsity plans are currently being formulated to ensure the virtual lectures "will be of the best possible quality".

Cambridge is the first to take such a radical step, but the University of Manchester announced last week that it was conducting all lectures online during the autumn term.

The Russell Group institution took the move amid “real uncertainty” over when social distancing will end and said the lecture theatre "does not easily support spatial separation", but added it hopes to run some face-to-face learning for small groups.

It comes after the regulator told universities to inform applicants whether or not they could expect face-to-face teaching next year in advance of them accepting offers.

The Office for Students said bosses must give students “absolute clarity” and not offer false hopes of a “campus experience”.

Most campuses have been shut since April with classes and exams moved online.

There is growing uncertainty across the sector over how they will operate next year, with institutions already facing huge financial losses from an expected fall in overseas students studying in the UK this autumn.

It is likely to prompt questions over tuition fees, with home students paying £9,250 a year and international students paying up to three times that.

Michelle Donelan, the universities minister, has said institutions can charge the full fee as long as online learning is “quality”.

But some students have expressed concerns they won't be getting their money's worth if all the teaching is done online.

Alex Jones, a second year Cambridge natural sciences student, told LBC News: "Being in a contact-heavy course, there isn't really a substitute for teaching that we get in the lab.

"Already this term we've had half the number of contact hours we were originally scheduled to have, and 10 weeks of fieldwork we were due to have were cancelled.

"If the same thing happens next year it's hard to see how it's worth £9250 when we'll be getting a lot less teaching."

Other British universities, which have been closely watching Government guidance while hesitant to be the first to act, could now follow suit.

Your school must have asked you to provide proof of English language skills (WAEC, IELTS, Letter from your previous institution certifying that your previous study was delivered in English, Certificate:- if you've previously completed a course in the UK) before giving you unconditional admission.
Whatever document you submitted to your school to prove your English language skills should be included in your visa application submission to avoid stories that touch.

It very possible ...it will be put in terms and conditions or the fine prints that nobody reads. So before you pay make sure you are clear on the refund policy and it's something you are comfortable with before you proceed

Normally, you wouldn't need anything else if they don't ask you for it before issuing your CAS. It will be stated on your CAS that your English skills have been assessed by them in which case, you'd only need to include your certificate in your visa application documents.

PS: Do you hold citizenship of an English-speaking country as listed by UKVI? Was the language of instruction indicated on your undergraduate certificate? Is your MSc admission offer conditional or unconditional? How did the school assess your English skills for this admission offer? What UK school granted you the admission and for which course? Did you at any point complete any course in the UK or any other English speaking country? And did you provide this evidence to the school? Will you be taking a pre-sessional English course at the UK school?

Hope you don't find my questions intrusive. I am asking because Ghana, like Nigeria, is not on the UKVI list of English speaking countries and this has led schools to ask for proof of English skills.

No I do not think so, hence why I asked if you’re going to that university. The best bet is to wait for the official confirmation from the UK GOV.

I know I won’t be paying all that money just to study online.

No, University of Lincoln for instance said they will include all "teaching techniques" face-to-face and online lectures etc. But they moved their resumption date from September to October 12th.

Can't remember all the details because I deleted the email by mistake.

Schools will come up with different plans just be up-to-date with the school you have accepted as well as the UK Govt.

@mamacajah

My first degree is "Economics" and I presently work in the banking industry as an sales person/Account Officer.

mamacajah:

What's your first degree and your work experience? is it related? would doing this course help you in your career path?
The course is too generic , hence my questions.

Don't believe that, the school will refund your deposit though the exchange rate may affect the amount you received.

Ya. Some schools will and some won't depending on the terms of condition especially after receiving CAS.

Anybody in Bournemouth?

Please Kindly give me insight on Bournemouth Uni, Average Accommodation for student with family of 4 and life generally in Bournemouth, transportation, etc. Also is there African store in Bournemouth?

I have offer to start this September.

Thank you

The Uni is rank top 100 in UK.
Average Accommodation for family of 4 means you need to get at least 2bedroom flat from £750-900.additional monthly bills will cost you at least £300 but you can get council tax discount as a student. For the Transportation, you can commute on bus for £60 monthly. But if you are to travel to London by Train, your ticket will cost you £60 one way but you can get a cheaper ticket if you travel when is not busy or you buy your ticket in advance. For stores, you can visit Pakistan stores to get few of your African item's but if you want more 9ja foodstuffs, is advisable you travel on Weekend to Peckham, Croydon e.t.c to buy Yur bulk purchase. On train service, is almost 2h 30mins to London. Bournemouth is a nice area, you have seaside around rhere. Gud luck
