Don't know about N80k in Canadian dollars but N80k is £160 which is about half what an IT consultant or any professional consultant will earn at a mid management level which is around £250-£500 day rate. With adequate tax planning and usage of pension allowance, one can keep almost all of that.

For paid Employees a decent mid to senior management role should yield anywhere between £150 and £300 daily before tax so you can call N80K anywhere between half a day to a full day's pay, while after tax, you can call it anywhere between half a day to 2 days net pay.

When I see people make this mistake of comparing earnings by converting a foreign currency to Naira I laugh. The exchange rate is not reflective of the comparative cost of living between Nigeria and that country. For example any guy can get a good hair cut for 1k in Abuja. Some can get a good haircut for N300.How much is a haircut in London.
The rent in a high brow duplex in Maitama Abuja is on the average 3M.How much does it cost to rent a duplex in NY or London.Lets even say a flat.
Electricity per kilowatts in Nigeria is one of the cheapest in the world. How much is electricity.
I hope you get my drift.Someone earning over 1.5M per annum in Nigeria can live a fairly comfortable life in any of the Nigerian cities talk more of outskirts. ie 125k per month.Convert that with current exchange rate of N430=$1 is $3488.
Someone earning that a year in any developed country is a welfare case.

So why the comparison. There is no basis for using that indices to compare cos the realities are totally different.

Hello Nairalanders,

I will be 30 years in a few months and I have never felt so much unease as I do right now. I work with one of the federal parastatals and I am currently on level 10 going to 12 next year. I have a Master degree athough it is not exactly relevant to my current job.

The problem is that my organisation uses the Ministry salary structure and my monthly net is below 80k even as a level 10 staff.

I am not married and I am academically inclined. Asides having a Master degree, I have over 8 professional certifications.

I have been trying to clinch a transfer of service to a better parastatal where the remuneration is better and where my knowledge/experiences as a science graduate will be better appreciated but it has been a bit difficult.

However, just before the COVID-19 episode in Nigeria, I got the right link for a transfer of service to a better parastatal but the process got stalled with the COVID-19 palaver.

I have 4 siblings who are Canadian citizens and they have been on my neck to migrate. I never took the calls seriously until this lockdown period. My siblings are arguing about the uncertainty of the Nigerian economy post-covid and advising me to seize this opportunity to migrate and start a new career over there?

My question therefore, "is it wise to stay back since I have gone quite far in my public service career and just wait for the opportunity to transfer my service to a better paying federal parastatal OR do I migrate to Canada and start a new career?

Your honest inputs will be highly appreciated. Thanks!

@CrazyMan @1forall Please I need your help in pushing this forward for a wider view. Thank you.
oga leave before you regret will kill you latter.

Good point about purchasing power. Just building on the previous posters comparison. Although the trade off for this higher purchasing power in Nigeria is peace of mind that comes from security, adequate healthcare systems, and the knowledge that you have embedded your kids within a buoyant economy and given them every chance to build on your achievements.

It's even lower than 138k I mentioned.
it's about 127K per month....The annual pay for a new employed pharmacist is #1,527,126, do the calculation.. A new pharmacist starts on CONHESS 09. For a Doctor it's #2,642,189

There are allowances they earn Sha but that's their basic salary.

Check below for a pharmacist!
So is the 220k u mentioned the basic salary for a Doc

This that every one is leaving for Canada. Who will now remain to fix Nigeria

Most of you people just like to reap from where you did not sow.

And you are not going to the Canada to solve any problem for humanity but just to get 'good employment' and now pray that Nigeria catches fire and averyone remaining there should go to hell.

For those of you badmouthing Nigeria. Remember 'ajo Ko le da bi ile' (Other people's country can never be.like your own country)

By God's grace Nigeria shall be great again in my life time.

That's the fact that we all dont want to accept, out of all those saying leave leave, some have never tried a little part of the application process to even know how feasible and easy/ hard it is ... That canada thing na luck and if u get family there or u going student route.

There is a truth that all of us can not leave Nigeria but in this guys case, he got 4 siblings there...certainly he has 80% chance of being successful at it and with the qualifications dt could boost his points.......As long as that is where God and his destiny wants him to be..its going to be a smooth journey. I wish the OP the best. Dont resign as someone suggested.

As a Nigerian youth, there was a time I was hopeful for Nigeria but all hope is lost...all my efforts to try d canada thing na ish...been in d pool now with our low scores, tried a provincial application. With the rate of high scores in d pool now, no chance.
Even have an uncle there that my mum contacted, d part where when u have a relative, hes been there for 10 to 12yrs.. he said he never have status to help....he can't help.....Life...
I will try and make the best for myself for now. God has got my Future....its all gonna end well....

Canada it is.....

What are you talking about sir?

It all boils down to the individual

One who had no plan for his life in Nigeria will not be successful abroad.....

And the curse of being a Nigerian is that most Nigerians will not be rich, whether they stay at home or abroad...

Their fates are already sealed....

So for many many Nigerians
Its living a "normal" life in Nigeria VS a normal li

fe abroad

You don't seem to understand what I'm talking about. The system is rigged to favour the white Americans. All these my colleagues that die poor, these people worked very hard in their life time. Try to talk to some Nigerians that have lived in U.S. for 20years and above they will tell you the same thing.

My brother, I had lived in two other countries including Canada. No doubt the quality of living in Canada is high but It comes with a prize. In a country where people are paid by hour should make you ask why. You have to work your ass up daily. If you want to enjoy the kind of life you are used for the past 30 years then you will constantly be thinking of Nigeria and it will push you to come back to Nigeria for a vacation. Definitely you will miss your social life in Canada, the grooves and the layback Nigeria brings. You will miss your friends in Nigeria (for real). On the other side, the things you take as Luxury in Nigeria are taken for granted in Canada. You will never be debt free if you live in Canada and that is is how the society is structured. You work and work and work. No break. The phone you use is on contract, the water you drink is not free, the house you live is on 25 to 30 years mortgage. No free TV to watch. When yo hit 50 + years those things we call luxury in Nigeria but are taken for granted will not make meaning to you again. You start thinking more of social life and Nigeria. You want to come back or want your kids to come back to Nigeria to study. If you make it in Nigeria, then there will be no place like Naija to live.

Good talk my brother. But most of these people will not listen to you, they think you don't want them to succeed in life. But they will find out in due course.

You asked why i didn't stay in Nigeria? I was ignorant like you at the time and don't have anybody to advise then. Dangote registered his business 2years after i left Nigeria. He never left Nigeria and so many others. Nobody will give you anything in America and I'm not trashing America just telling the structure that was set up over there. You should have stayed in Nigeria and work hard, you probably gave birth to your kids in America, why can't you give to them in Nigeria, or do you think we don't work hard in Nigeria, you went to a country that gave you a platform to make money and advance in your career, you are here telling young men who have no career, underpaid, right grossly abused in Nigeria, not to move to a better country when the opportunity come, but you moved while you got the opportunity.

When Dangote registered his business, why can't you come back to Nigeria and follow his footstep, oh sorry you couldn't come back because you were in America working hard to make money, you forgot that Dangote's father was then the richest man in Africa, you forgot Dangote's uncle borrowed him 50,000 naira which is like 500,000,000 naira in today's economy, you forgot that he had back up, in Nigeria how many people enjoy 24/7 electricity and water, good roads, quality road and education, effective health care, but you come here to open your wide mouth to thrash a country that gave you the opportunity to advance your career..

See oga, if you no get better thing to talk, just keep shut..

No need for that

Many of them do not understand the concept of finance and teamwork, hence them ending in such way.

America is a country that even an idiot who came in at the age of 25 can pay $120 in an index fund per month (opening a ROTH IRA helps too) and retire a millionaire in his 60s, passing that money to his descendants as a head start.

But many Nigerians (blacks) dont know how finance works
From our spending habits you can tell
