How many Dangotes do we have in Nigeria? I can argue that for every Dangote there are thousands of other talented failures. How many people had Dangote's connection as he is a relative of Dantata, a renowned old money? From my experience, those who complain like you are usually those from elite backgrounds who expect to have the same level of success and elitism in UK or US as they would have had in Nigeria. So they see their friends becoming Ministers, Commissioners, big men here and that's the level they use in comparing their achievement. America gave you a platform to have a solid middle-class status so stop whining and discouraging despondent young Nigerians from having a chance. I know a UK-trained gynaecologist and academic at a solid UK university that felt like a failure all because of his friend became a Commissioner; imagine that level of silliness all because he did not have the opportunity to steal from the nation. Many people just want a chance.

jojoseph:

You asked why i didn't stay in Nigeria? I was ignorant like you at the time and don't have anybody to advise then. Dangote registered his business 2years after i left Nigeria. He never left Nigeria and so many others. Nobody will give you anything in America and I'm not trashing America just telling the structure that was set up over there. And it's a slavery system and i repeat it's a slavery system.

I can relate to what you have just said, especially the poverty-induced envy and jealousy. Presently, I live in fears. Since the people around me learned what I earn from my young online business, it's has been about bitterness- and jealousy-induced calumny. I just realized that living among lazy poor people is the most dangerous thing in this world.

I wonder how Linda Ikeji and Instablog coped in their early days.

@Op, with the kind of link you have to Canada, I really wonder what you're doing in Nigeria thinking of federal job — not as if you're even thinking of business. Canada straight!
This has been my concern as well. I will be rounding up NYSC in a couple of month's time; few months into service year, I was able to get hold of some relevant info, which spurred me to test the waters of freelancing. Luckily enough for me, I succeeded and have been consistently raking nothing below 1000$ for the past few months; I earned above 2000$ at some point. The problem is living life after NYSC. I studied a medical-related course; however, no job in my field can afford to earn me my current earnings for a start; Heck, I'm even earning salaries of workers in managerial roles of multinationals. Given how primitive minded Nigerians are, especially the elderly civil servants, most of whom grin with envy when they see a young lad living the life. Most of them spent several years in service before they could afford a decent car (corolla sports) and a 3-bedroom flat built on loan, which they end up paying back through their noses for several decades.

EXACTLY MY ARGUMENT. ALL YOUR PEOPLE IN CANADA COMBINED THEIR ACCOUNTS TOGETHER AND ALL THEY COULD SEND YOU WAS JUST #150K. AND AM VERY SURE THAT IS EVEN THEIR LAST CARD.

NOW IMAGINE IF THEY WERE ALL BASED IN NIGERIA WITH GOOD PAYING JOBS, IF THEY WERE ALL TO SEND YOU MONEY COMBINED, WILL #150K BE THE BEST THEY CAN DO?

You should have stayed in Nigeria and work hard, you probably gave birth to your kids in America, why can't you give to them in Nigeria, or do you think we don't work hard in Nigeria, you went to a country that gave you a platform to make money and advance in your career, you are here telling young men who have no career, underpaid, right grossly abused in Nigeria, not to move to a better country when the opportunity come, but you moved while you got the opportunity.

Hypocrite and wicked human

I was about 19years old when i left Nigeria and i left because of education. At that time, we only have 4 universities in the country as a result some of us do not have a choice but to travel out of the country. My children were brought back to Nigeria and 3 of them finished thier secondary school education in Nigeria.
Hey, i pray for you IJN to grant you opportunity to travel to U.S. or Canada and in about 20 to 30years now, you will comprehend what I'm trying to convey to you. As I'm typing this message, I'm in Los Angeles stuck because of corona virus and i will be leaving once the boarders are opened. I will not even mind to sponsor you, just for you to go experience what I'm talking about.

America, London or Canada is a journey of no returns 90% to 95% of Nigerians in those countries will die over there do your research.
I'm really sorry for you because you don't know what you're talking about. Firstly, nobody is telling you not to move to U.S. or Canada or do i stop you from going to the embassy no.
Secondly, I'm not telling any young man not to travel, this is their prerogative. All I'm saying is do your research very well , find out what happened to Nigerians that left the country in the 70s, 80s,90s and 2000s.
Right now, 90% to 95% of Nigerians in London, U.S. or Canada will die over there because Nigeria is beyond their rich. They have no resources to relocate back to Nigeria. Ask anyone who have stayed in U.S. for over 20years or more.
These people were young like you when they left the country with the hope to make a better life for themselves. How many of these people have come back to contribute to the development of this country that you know?
Do you know is more easier to make money in Nigeria than U.S. or Canada, this is the message I'm trying pass on to the young people, instead of going to abroad to waste their time and 30years from now be regretting their actions.
If you're one of the poorest of the poor, that doesn't have any hope in Nigeria and you have opportunity to travel out the take the opportunity you might be one of the few lucky one. God bless your hustle.

You're 100% right. But they won't believe you, they are thinking you don't want them to travel abroad. The young generation lack capacity for research.
What happened to Nigerians that left in the 70s, 80s,90s and 2000s, most of them are still there struggling to survive.
The only way i will recommend anybody to travel abroad if you're the poorest of the poor, no university education and you can't feed yourself then you can travel. Because, America or Canada is a journey of no returns. 90% to 95% of Nigerians will die and be buried over there. Go and ask those that have been over there for 20years and above. Is a journey of no returns.

[You said it all. Some people are really born blessed, see opportunity like water.Your siblings are all citizens of Canada while you are also working even though the work is not bringing much but you have a job that is given you something at the end of the month, see me here no job even the
business iam doing no capital to invest in it.Please listen to your siblings and leave this country, this country is a dream killer especially if you don't have strong connection or you are not buyoya enough.Govt job is good but it will make you lose your potential as a young man, those old men in govt parasators can be frustrating especially if you are a brilliant young man.

Move to Canada. In my humble opinion.
Biko.
That your level 12 salary could be a week's pay in Canada. The beginning will be rough. But you are a Nigerian. You are dogged. Go there have a plan. Get a goal. Take actions to chase it based on the Canadian environment. Ordinary DoorDash or Point Pickup in the US for example gives you 100 Dollars per day. Per day. Almost 40k per day. (Don't know what the exchange rate is as I type this).

The only good thing about the civil service in Nigeria is job security of sorts. And freedom to run a business and work. Please if you can,
kindly ignore that stupid conflict of interest rule. It is the most stupid rule of the civil service. They use you for 35 years or so. Then dump you. You have no business experience when and if your gratuity is paid. Your pension/gratuity is of little value due to inflation and loss of value of the naira. There is no cost of living adjustment of any sort. So the only good thing is little job security and freedom to run your own business. The pay is shit. Nepotism is rife. Motivation is usually low.

In my honest opinion, plan well. Save enough. Improve your skills. And go to Canada. You can also work and run your business. Entrpeneural opportunities are there too and the economy more stable and predictable. Financing is also a possibility with good credit rating.

The Canadian option also better favours your CHILDREN. They have much of a headstart. Especially with the opportunity of being born and raised there. Think about it. Hopefully they won't worry like you now about what to do. YOU WILL BE PROUD WHEN YOU SEE YOUR KIDS IN FUTURE. IF NOT FOR ANYTHING YOU WILL BE GLAD YOU MADE THIS MOVE AS IT WILL BENEFIT YOUR KIDS.

Unless you are not up for the initial stress that comes with this move. Otherwise, look beyond the now and see the future. Talk with your siblings. What are the opportunities? What are your plans and theirs for you? Are you schooling first? Are you working immediately? How much are they willing to support to allow you find your footing?

Have a concrete plan with contingencies. Take the bold step. All things go well you have Canadian Residency and Nigerian Citizenship. You can move between countries whenever you want. [/quote]

When Dangote registered his business, why can't you come back to Nigeria and follow his footstep, oh sorry you couldn't come back because you were in America working hard to make money, you forgot that Dangote's father was then the richest man in Africa, you forgot Dangote's uncle borrowed him 50,000 naira which is like 500,000,000 naira in today's economy, you forgot that he had back up, in Nigeria how many people enjoy 24/7 electricity and water, good roads, quality road and education, effective health care, but you come here to open your wide mouth to thrash a country that gave you the opportunity to advance your career..

See oga, if you no get better thing to talk, just keep shut..

When Dangote registered his business i was still in the university so i couldn't come back to Nigeria plus fingers are not equal. You have to follow you dream in life nobody owes you anything including Nigeria. I read a lot about successful people including Dangote so i knew his history.
You're still very young to be making excuses in life, you complain about 24/7 electricity and water, good roads, effective healthcare and education. Let me ask you how many people pay taxes in Nigeria?
America did not give me anything free and i believe if you use your God given common sense you yourself can make it in Nigeria instead of you waiting for someone to come and dash money so you start your life.
With your mindset life is going to be difficult for you.

My brother sorry to about your troubles with American embassy and nothing your father could do about it? Nobody will advise you not to travel, I'm just trying to advise based on my experience and what i see everytime i visit U.S. There's nothing anybody can tell you about U.S. until you come to see it for yourself.
The only way i will advise anybody to travel abroad is if you're the poorest of the poor and you can't afford to feed yourself. Then you can travel, I'm saying this base on my experience and seeing some of my colleagues that are still over there.
We all can not run away from the country and also remember where you're running to, those people doesn't want you. They are only trying to accommodate us.

Nice hearing from you sir. Long time. I understand your viewpoint. Like I mentioned, I don't know of any job that can afford to pay me that high for a start in my field; consider enlightening me if there are any. I think the highest payers for young Rx are multinationals Rx companies, of which I'm quite sure they do not earn close to the aforementioned. An older friend of mine (12 yrs experience in sales) willing to switch to contract manufacturing who currently works for Novartis as a manager in the north does not earn that much. Not to linger on how difficult and almost impossible to get into those agencies you mentioned as a commoner, attaining managerial positions in those agencies take several decades. How has been the field sir?

The field is great...Int'l NGOs pay more than multinationals I believe....and sometimes the experience from a particular job is worth more than the salary (at entry level).....it is quite difficult getting into those juicy MDAs but not impossible....and as a Rx you'll attain managerial position in about 12 yrs (all things being equal)............Like motivational speakers will say; opportunities meet preparation (an acquired skill), sometimes those juicy MDAs might be looking for a skill that they can't get from Polithiefians' children, and you may just be that fit! ....I applied for a position with one of them and becos govt works like a snail, by the time they shortlisted (after several months) for interview I was busy with a project and couldn't attend....they kept calling me after the interview date had passed... And eventually rescheduled another date for me with all expenses paid (very unusual)......I left the interview with my appointment letter; I guess they did this to prevent me from changing my mind.....I was to resume in a month's time or the offer would lapse (stated boldly on the offer letter) but I resumed after 4 months and nothing happened....
