Dear all,

I really need an advice. I currently work with one of the Nigerian banks. My monthly take home is about 450k and quite good. My major problem right now is that I have just been transferred from a Branch at one end of Lagos to another end of Lagos. All efforts to convince my boss to deploy me to a closer branch has proved abortive.

Going to work daily right now is a very difficult especially during this raining season and covid 19th period. I spend roughly 3-4 hours on the road when going to work and back home.

I am currently raising my kids on my own right now and dont know how I would manage when school resumes. Before now I drop them off on my way to work in the morning and my friend picks them up to her house in the afternoon till I get back.

I currently have a savings of 2million and would love to start a biz( I dont know what kind) as am comptemplating resigning and start a biz instead so that I can have time for my kids and not die due to stress

Please i really need advice for you all.

Good day, I know how you exactly feel going by this Lagos wahala. But resigning is not the best ideal, while not go into a good network marketing and be settled then you can resign. If my advice is convincing to you or need to know more about it. Feel free to contact me on +2347068164956. Just have thought on it.

I think you're being too hasty and would appeal to you not to make a hasty decision that will cause you damage because you sound like someone who's about to react ( from negative reactions ) rather than someone who's about to embark on a well planned action. There's a difference. Trust me I know.

I qualify to give you sound counsel as a business operator and would like to discredit any thoughts of you quitting you job because of your savings.

Let's take it step by step

1. Financial security is important. Can you reduce your monthly expenses and boost your savings so you can save let's say 300k monthly, which in six months gives you an approximate of another 2 Million Naira

2. Start the process of setting up a business while you're still employed. This way you can weigh the options if it's for you or not. And can easily convert your salaries towards the establishment of the business

3. Do not quit your job until you've had a well to Houghton out business plan and have put it into effect. Remember money is just half the equation, the other half the business

4. Be more tolerant rather than being irritated because things aren't working for you from a place of convenience. Start thinking positive thoughts about the positives of your job. I'm sure it can't be all negative. Whatever it's costing you, give yourself the opportunity to reflect and tell yourself giving it six more months for proper planning won't do you harm

5. Get a second accommodation closer to work. So you can shuttle between both ends. Friday home till Sunday. Have you considered this?

6. Get a nanny and if you can afford it, get a driver too and delegate some of the duties with the kids care to them.

7. Give yourself time. Do not jump to the next thing until that so-called " next thing " has been fully constructed while you're still maintaining the one that looks stressful.
Well said. I just want to add that in case you are considering a nanny, a drive or any carer for those little young champions, pray very well. It's a cold world out there.

My deardnt resign yet. U have 2 options here. 1. Either u relocate closer to ur workplace though the rent might be high I guess or 2. Continue on the new branch but starve yourself to save at least additional 3m to the 2m,if u can achieve it in 1yr,dat would be a good one. In dat process, put eyes down to dat biz u have in mind to start, ask people dat are into it already how they're fairing,go for a biz u have passion for and not a trending one.

My boss is a graduate with first class degree, he left a job of 700k in Mobil to start his own biz, he is now cashing out big with over 4 shop in Lagos, 2 in abj , 1 in ph, he makes over 10 million in profit after xpenses, op if you have a well biz plan open it while you are still working in the Bank find a trusted boy from your village that can handle the biz well.

Please don't quit your job for any reason, the situation in the country at this moment is not too palatable for business owners. besides, you don't expect a business to start yielding return at the go, it needs time. Just try to get an apartment not too far from your new working place and if you don't mind, you can employ me to take care of your kids.

Good luck on whatever decision you make.

Do have a nice day!

I'm sorry to say, but having just 2 Million Naira savings on a 459k monthly job directly implies you're in a financial crisis already but don't know. And rocking the boat will leave you at the disadvantaged position
How do you reconcile items 1, 5, and 6; saving 300k out of 450k, and still have items 5&6 in mind?

Pls take the first comment serious.

Starting business is not just having 2m in fact of the time business is not all about the money you have. So quitting as for me is not an option.

I know banking job is stressful too as a mother however, consider the following

1. Relocation, getting a family members to stay with you I am not comfortable with nanny (personal view anyway) there are still some good ones if you are blessed.
2. Increase your saving culture and have a target
3. Start learning the business you want to start online or offline spend your leisure time with someone who is into that business
4. Have a mentor or get a feasibility study of what you want to do
5. Start the business while you still maintain your job.
6. Grow the business and learn the up and down (Let someone run it for you for now for you to have an idea) sometimes some businesses are very good in paper but not good in practical. I have been involved in many businesses so I know what I am talking about.
7. Trying your best to cope with your present situation and adjust gradually, your decision for not may be bias. But honestly I like the way you seek advises it is good but what you make out of us these matter.
8. Do invest on what you don't anything about or business you will not be in control. Do not give the money to any one in fact as banker you should know better. Save and invest and get returns in the financial system.
9. Above all please discuss with your husband and two of you should consider the options and work together as a team.
10. Lastly don't quit now. A bird in hand is worth million in the bush.

When I was working, I have my company that was giving me almost my salary. I had an investment that was also giving me about half of my salary so by the time I was leaving to face business, the monthly expenses was not left unattended to.

What kills business is when the owner depend on profit for daily survival hence before going into business, you must have enough money to take care of your monthly expenses for the next 1 year or more. Business need to grow before one start eating the profit and even the capital.

Shallow

Having read your piece and the worries you shared. It is important to state the following; Do not resign on your high paying job unless you have figured out the type of business you want to engage in. Secondly seek the advice of financial expert, thirdly ensure that what ever decision you take will be better than your current condition. Finally seek the face of God before you kiss goodbye to your job.

Your last point @emboldened is golden. Two million savings of 450k salary is paltry

I don't know why people are bashing the op for having savings of 2m. She/He is raising kids alone with no support including expenses like fees, feeding, house rent and all.
Op people have said it all, just endure for another year, save up more while still researching about your intended business, better still why not seek investment options. I know of a company that can give you double your returns in one year legit. Check out "themap" on IG and see. That your money could actually work for you while lying dormant. Investment is key.

The golden rule of life applies. You don't leave what is certain for what's uncertain. This rule always applied. Sticking to ones place of comfort and growing out of this zone has proven time and time again to be the best way to handle such kind of situation
