Supermansteve:You can't farm plantain in borno as the environment is not conducive for it. Nevertheless, you can still provide a conducive environment but that might not be sustainable as it will cost you more than what you will realised from it. |

This is the best way of entering farming business and growing the business with limited capital. 1. You need to acquire training, information or experience. Start with limited risk. It doesn't matter how much money you have, it's just not wise to start with a massive high risk investment. This puts you at a very high risk of great loss in case of mistakes made form lack of experience or knowledge. In other words, get knowledge or get knowledgeable/experienced people to work with if you are going to embark on a massive farm business,if not start small. #DoagricItpays#agriculture#agribusiness |

Many years ago, even before the advent of mass rush into agriculture by Nigerians, I saw the opportunities and it's wealth creating potentials and I told few of my friends willing to listen and willing to take action with me that they should invest in agriculture. I shared few of my findings with them. Those that venture out with me then are doing very well now. The journey was not easy but the experience taught me some great lessons I started farm estates many years ago due to my bad experiences. I bought some tens of acres of farmland to be used for farming purpose. Months after acquiring,I faced a lot of issues, from security, poor accessibility, and lots more The height of it all was when fulani cattle herdmen came to feed their cattle with my 9 months old cassava destroying about 50 acres in the process. A year down the road,I abandoned the land and the idea of starting a farm estate where people interested in agribusiness can buy a land, farm the land, in a well secured, accessible to road, market etc. And over the past 7 years,I am happy that numerous of our clients are satisfied and can farm in a well secured environment with access to market. These are what I did wrong in my first land acquisition 1. I acquire my farmland in the midst of no-where,where I was alone with no farmers around. I learnt this in a very hard way. No farmers was within 10km of my farm,I was seriously exposed. Now,we have farmers both in the community where our farm estate is located and city farmers which you can interact with, collaborate and share ideas and knowledge. 2. I didnot ask questions on the security of the farm. I was rushing to get started with cultivation and was blinded to the fact that my farm cultivation cannot succeed without a well secured area. The guy that sold the land was just interested in selling land and after money have exchanged hand,he left me to my own destiny,I have to fight, spend lot of money to secure the farm When I discovered that it's not sustainable,I had to abandon the land. That's why on our farm estates,we make sure that apart from selling you problem-free,secured farmland, we provide the necessary support from cultivation to accessibility to the market. Those on our farm estates can testify to this. 3. Poor accessible road The access to the farm was poor,I had to turn 360° round the farm to know what's happening on the other side of the farm. If anything happens on the farm,it will take days to know. There are lot and lots of what I want to share concerning land but I will have to stop here. If you need problem-free,secured land, then you can talk to me. Till June 15th,there is also great discount for those that will be joining others on any of our farm estates in ijebu-igbo (ogun state),ogbomoso (Oyo state) or ilorin (kwara state). |

If you are looking to generate a sustainable, good returns in Agribusiness, then you should venture into it. Unfortunately, there is only one hotspot for cashew in Nigeria which is *Ogbomoso,Oyo state* As I am writing, I believe a foreigner somewhere now in ogbomoso are closing multi-million cashew deals... Every year,Chinese, Vietnamese, indians, Americans comes into ogbomoso to do cashew business. This is also because cashew grown in Ogbomoso has the highest quality in the whole of Nigeria. My advice for you if you want to do cashew is to find a location in ogbomoso for it. That's one of the main reason I sited our cashew farm estates there. Once you have your cashew in ogbomoso, there will be great opportunity to have buyers (both local and foreigners) paying premium price for your nuts. There are 3 factors of success for cashew 1.Cultivate your cashew farm where premium price is placed on it As far as cashew is concerned, ogbomoso is the hotzone for cashew nuts in the whole of Nigeria. 2. Planting good hybrid seeds 3.once planted, protect it against fire. I have read some posts l on cashew advising people to plant only hybrid seednut called Brazilian jumbo variety (because it produces a big nut) This is partially true. For those of us that are on the field,we know that Brazilian jumbo variety produces big size but the yield are not much,so what do we do,we add the medium size variety (which produces average size but has massive yield) to the plantation in such a way that when there is cross-pollination during flowering, the jumbo size produces big nut and great yield as well. For more info about cashew seedlings, you can watch this video I did on our farm many years ago about cashew https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RO6KMXuFaI4 Now,if all is done well, within 3 years, you can start harvesting (although it won't be on a commercial scale); by the 4th year, commercial harvesting should have started. Now,if you want to start harvesting early and have good yield, then from day 1,you have to put structure to prevent fire on the farm. If you do not protect against that and fire gut your farm especially during dry season, then your harvest will be deeply hit and you will have longer duration. Another thing you can do on your farm is to interplant your cashew with cassava to maximise space and revenue. Your cassava from planting to harvesting takes 11 months and after the first harvest, you can still replant the cassava again. This you can do for up to 10 years on the same land. While you get your returns from cassava, you also get from cashew as well. Now a ton of cashew is about N400k,if you can have 10 tons or more conveniently on your farm every season, you are a millionaire that will be smiling to the bank. I will be happy to throw more light on questions as it concerns cashew if there is any. Have a lovely day everyone |

Dream, aspirations do come through only if it's back by actions. Yes,you want to have a 10,30,50,100,600 acres of cassava, plantain, cashew, oilpalm etc generating income for you year in year out but what are you doing about that goal now. What action plan are you taking towards it? If you want to bring it to reality, then you need to work towards it. You want to have additional source of income, what steps are you taking to achieve that. You want money to be working for you when you retire from active service, then how are you investing now? You are not satisfy with your current income, then what steps are you taking improve on it. I really like what some members here are doing as it pertains to creating a sustainable revenue through agribusiness If you guys continue with the momentum, 3-5 years is enough for you to do exploit In all,if you want your dream to become a reality, back it up with consistent action. Good morning. |

*AGRIBUSINESS & AGRICULTURE* When most people think of agriculture in Africa, images of poor and overworked farmers with crude tools on a rural farm readily come to mind. Many, especially young Africans, still think that agribusiness is a poor man’s occupation. Nowadays everybody wants a white-collar office job in the city. Agribusiness is hardly on anyone’s mind. Did you know that Africa sits on an agribusiness goldmine but most people just dont’t see it? If you’re one of the blind, allow me to open your eyes with a few exciting facts you need to know about agribusines in Africa… Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, recently invested $1 billion in rice production? Every year, Africa spends billions of dollars on rice imports, and Dangote wants a slice of the market. Since 2009, investors in the USA, Europe, Middle East and Asia have been buying and leasing millions of hectares of African land for agricultural purposes? Many people may not know it but there’s a trend of serious land grabbing by foreign interests for African land. Foreign Direct Investment in African agribusiness was $10 billion in 2010 and is projected to reach $45 billion by 2020? Agriculture is taking a huge leap in Africa and investors want a piece of the action too. Africa’s agribusiness industry will be worth $1 trillion by 2030! That’s huge! If this projection by the United Nations comes true, agribusiness will become the ‘new oil’ in Africa! In the light of these facts, the rich and wealthy folks are investing in Africa’s agribusiness industry while the majority of Africans are largely ignorant about the amazing potentials of agriculture on the continent? Let me share with you five reasons why agriculture is the biggest business opportunity right now in Africa. And why many of the world’s top business people are investing in African agribusiness. *1. Africa has cheap agricultural land* According to the World Bank, Sub-Saharan Africa is home to nearly 50 percent of the world’s fertile, usable and uncultivated agricultural land. The size: over 200 million hectares! The continent is now widely considered to be the future breadbasket of the world. It is this huge abundance of land resources that gives Africa the strategic potential to feed the world! Most of Africa’s agricultural land lies in the savannah and tropical rain forest belt, which receives a favourable amount of rainfall and sunlight all year round. As a direct consequence, more than 80 percent of food crops consumed across the world can be produced here. Interestingly, a large proportion of Africa’s agricultural land is located in the rural areas. That’s why they’re often cheap to buy or lease. On the average, one hectare of land (10,000sqm) can be leased for as low as $100 per year (depending on the location). This makes it one of the best land bargains you can find anywhere in the world! *2. Africa has a ready market and high demand for agricultural produce* Agribusiness is one of the best business opportunities in the world as food never goes out of fashion. People must eat food everyday! Currently, Africa’s population is just over one billion people. At its current growth rate, the continent’s population is expected to reach 2.2 billion by 2050. Now and in the future, Africa will always have a lot of mouths to feed. Africa currently spends billions of dollars every year to import grains, flour and all kinds of finished and semi-finished foods which it can produce locally. There is a huge opportunity for entrepreneurs who can provide cheaper and locally-grown alternatives to the food that Africa imports. It’s not just the food industry that depends on agribusiness. Several other industries, especially the manufacturing and processing industries, depend on agribusiness for a wide range of raw materials. As Africa’s economies continue to grow, the demand for raw materials will surely increase and create more interesting opportunities for agribusiness on the continent. *3. Improved varieties and farm practices are changing the game across Africa* Agribusiness in Africa has suffered through the years because of its poor yields and crude farm practices. Most of the crops cultivated on the continent produce very little and are often very prone to pests, diseases and drought. As a result, most African farmers used to work very hard but have very little to show for all their hard work during harvest time. However, due to advances in crop/animal science and technology, it is now possible to harvest more food per hectare than ever before in Africa’s history. There are now improved crop and animal varieties that mature earlier, require less resources, and are less susceptible to pest attacks, diseases and drought. Across Africa, these improved varieties are increasing yields by as much as 400 percent! There are now improved and locally-adapted varieties of maize, cassava, millet, rice, sorghum, beans, sweet potato, cowpea, groundnut, soybean, pigeon pea, banana, durum wheat, and bread wheat. There are also several local and international organisations that are focused on supporting African farmers with improved seedlings and support. One of such organisations is the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), launched by the Rockefeller Foundation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2006. *4. Agribusiness is very scalable.* You can start with what you have. Whether you own one plot of land or 10,000 hectares, agribusiness is one of few business opportunities that allow you to start on any scale, with whatever you have! Entrepreneurs like South Africa’s Anna Phosa started her agribusiness in 2008 in her backyard with just four pigs. Today, she owns a 350-hectare pig farm and is a major supplier to Pick n’ Pay, the South Africa supermarket chain. The opportunity to start small means that people with little capital can become part of Africa’s multi-billion dollar agribusiness industry. Because of the guaranteed demand for agricultural produce, that small vegetable or poultry farm in your backyard could just become a huge business tomorrow. Every evidence shows that you don’t have to be a wealthy investor with millions of dollars in the bank or a highly-educated person in order to start a business in agriculture in Africa. You can start where you are and use what you have, and grow from there. You can start your agribusiness journey in your home backyard or do it on a part-time basis with your day job. It’s very flexible that way! *5. Agribusiness is a huge job creator* Agribusiness is one of the most effective ways to create jobs and empower millions of Africans. At present, up to 60 per cent of the labour force in Sub-Saharan Africa is employed in the agribusiness industry. Agribusiness remains a top employer of labour in many African countries. The value chain in the agribusiness industry, from food production, processing and marketing provide huge opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship. So, if you’re looking to start a business or invest in an industry that makes a significant social impact, provides jobs and creates sustainable wealth, agribusiness is surely the way to go! Africa is changing. You need to be a part of this big dream. |
