Grupo:
Just continue to learn a relevant programming language and be good at it.

As for your statistics degree, your only option is to start teaching maths in secondary schools when you graduate.

Programming will take you far.

His only option ?

I can see your education is a waste .

May be you should google STATISTICS ode

See how someone is underrating statistics. Statistics is very lucrative in Nigeria if u know ur worth but statistics as a course is not a child play. U need to study hard and smart to come out in flying colour. There are many opportunities as a statistics graduate. U can work in a bank, multinational organisations just to mention a few.
. you are right guy ...I'm 200 level student of computer science but don't know programming they just teach us basic c program and fucking assembly language so I decided privately to learn web development but I don't know weather it worth it advice please !!!!!

Bachelors degrees dey like Waec now. And an Hausa man with Agric.econo degree is a director in CBN. so no worry. You fit work anywhere in Nigeria.

Animal farm is real!

I really do not understand, the three best courses of choice targets for banks are ; economics, banking/finance, agricultural economics (Akinwunmi adesina). So I don't understand who you have a problem with, whether it is the fact that he is an hausa man or because he has a degree in agricultural economics.

This is the best advice anyone studying statistics will get in a long time.

Prepare yourself for a job in Data Sciences, how?

In addition to your Bsc make sure by the time your graduate you have also learned these below:

Python Programming - You don't have to be a guru in this basic will do, but is essential. "https://www.python.org/about/gettingstarted/"

Spark SQL - Same as above "https://spark.apache.org/docs/latest/sql-programming-guide.html"

Hadoop - Same as above "https://www.bmc.com/blogs/hadoop-introduction/"

I need to discus with you.

Both Stat and CS are in the same department in ABU, simply pick all your electives from CS and don't forget to do your siwes program at IYA Abubakar or ABU WAD. Keep developing yourself as a computer scientist and bag the statistic degree just for the sake of it.

Alternatively, you could take the course seriously and become a lecturer, there's a massive lack of statistics lecturers in Nigeria. [/quote]

Learn Python Programming with your University Afrihub, you will be hotcake in all field.

Python is very easy in learning, and has general functions that comprises some java, c+, c# and so on. It means Python can be use in Artificial intelligence, gaming, web development, software development, data mining, more scientific functions. You can learn it via YouTubes, PDF and so on.

Statistics is far a better course than computer science. With statistics, you can work in any place. Almost everybody is a computer literate now and computer scientist are jobless now. The most important thing you should think of now is how to graduate with a better grade in statistics bcus it is not an easy course

ask1509:
@OP,
I was in your exact situation 12 years ago. Applied for Computer Science at FUTA, and was offered statistics instead. I told myself I wouldn't take the course and do JAMB again, but my father convinced me to take up the course. Looking back, studying stats is one of the best decision I ever took. I managed to graduate top of my class (had a high 2.1, not first class) and learnt how to program in R right about the time big data and data science started becoming popular. After I graduated, I got a scholarship to AIMS-Cameroon (nexteinstein.org) through the Next Einstein Initiative where I did a taught master in Cameroon for 11 months all for free. I graduated with a distinction and wrote GRE and TOEFL with the free monthly stipend money we were given at Cameroon. After returning to Nigeria, didn't bother to look for a job, I jumped on Upwork and Fiverr and started working as a freelance data analyst with my R programming skills. I made around $6k within a period of 1 - 2 years, even bought my own inverter and battery to avoid naija's power problem. During this time, naira to dollar was quite high so the exchange rate favoured me. Didn't even feel the economic meltdown Nigeria was going through during this period. Meanwhile, I was simultaneously applying for a PhD position on the side. After many attempts, I got a funding in Spain. Took 10 months to get the visa but finally, after a lot of outrageous and incredible paper work (see this thread for details: https://www.nairaland.com/2261523/spanish-student-visas/19#66897678), I escaped from naija April of 2018. Been two years I arrived in Madrid now, still working hard on the PhD..but looking back, I can't help but thank God I studied stats instead of computer science. My father passed away when I was in 300 level at FUTA but I am grateful that God used him to encourage me to take up stats.

I am not sure how strong Ahamadu Bello University is Statistics but I will advice you take up the course. You have a better

chance of being trained well in stats over there than in Computer Science. Most public universities in Nigeria do not have adequate Computer Science training anyways. If you ever pick up stats, just do your best, study hard, be the best you can be, learn all the data science programming aspect on your own (python, R, julia etc..whatever rocks your boat). If you do well, and you really know your stuff, trust me...you will be a hot cake.

All the best!

Wow impressive story...

can you give me tips on how you were able to make $6k in 2yrs on Fiverr n Upwork?...

I was in your shoes many years ago , I wanted to study Chemical Engineering but alas I got offered Maths and Stats , I soo did not want to do that course , I felt ashamed when people asked me what I was studying . I half heartedly studied it .

A degree in stats gives you the foundation for becoming a programmer , data analyst , data scientist , financial analyst, statistician , educator etc

I think what is more important is what additional skills you acquire on top of that foundation , what tools you learn to use and how you apply it .

My story - After I finished my Stats degree, I got Oracle certified , started worked in a bank for 2 years then left Nigeria to get an MSc in IT. I have worked in predominantly data roles since then and I can tell you it is rewarding , but like everything else you MUST put in the work . All the best !

How is the Oracle certificate gotten?...

i don laugh taya.

Bros, i graduated with a Bsc statistics some years. I started my career as a Banker.
I move to become and Auditor/Investigation officer still in a financial institution. (I got a certification as a Certified Fraud Examiner CFE)
Presently working as a Regional compliance Officer for a multinational (got a Certification as a Certified Anti-Money Laundering Officer CAMS)
Looking forward to own my Consultancy firm soon.

So like many people said.....you can work anywhere....just your focus and determination.

How did you get those certificates?...

you must be a very fraud vigilant man...

I did my training through one of the Indian owned IT schools then , I wouldn't say it benefited me in anyways , the course was expensive and Oracle jobs even though highly rated were very scarce . There are a lot of highly sought and valuable professional certifications out there now , it all depends on your field and interests.
