Hello Nairalanders! Please I'm in serious need of your candid advice. Let me go straight to the point.

I've been going through a delimma for some days now. I'm presently working with a microfinance bank and i earn about 40k after tax. Recently, I was offered a job in government house with a salary slightly above my present salary.

In my present place of work, there is job security and I learn a lot on the job although the salary ain't much. In the new job, there is free accommodation but no job security because I'm being employed by the SA (special assistant) to the governor and i won't be getting any official appointment letter.

The problem now is, I'm stuck between the two. I don't know if I'm to go with the new offer or continue with my present job. I don't want to take a decision that I might regret tomorrow. My fear is that I might be sacked at any time because I'm not employed directly by the government but the SA.

I've been thinking about it and i still don't know the best decision to take. So, I decided to seek advice from nairaland cause I know I can get good advice here.

Please I will appreciate your sincere advice and contributions.

Op,
Go for the government house job, even if there
might be no security but your exposure is
guaranteed, from that exposure you might get
recomendations to better job offers.
Life is all about taking risks, and not taking risk
is a risk on its own."

Stay put. Don't accept the new offer.

With no job security and it's only a slight salary increment, it's not worth risking your stable life.

I believe the free accommodation will be invalid the moment you're fired, so it's not really a perk.
What do you mean?

For confidentiality, I won't ask you to say the state. But consider some things;
When is the current state Govt leaving office?
Can you ask the SA to give you an appointment letter?
Can you save the new job just in case the whole thing goes south?
What skills have you learnt in the microfinance bank?
Start thinking of creating another source of income if you pick up the new offer.

The current govt should be leaving in 2 to 3 years time

I don't think I can ask him for appointment letter cause other people he also gave job didn't get appointment letter

I'm not sure about saving the new job

IT skills cause I'm in IT sector (the SA wants to employ me as a network administrator)

The SA would hand you over to the next SA. For you to even have connection with an SA is commendable. What is microfinance bank compared to this? With your experience you can always get another microfinance job, albeit, with extra experience with the SA.

Stick with your current job.

Edited: Based on the your reply below, It is will be better to try out the new offer, be dedicated and professional. IT gurus that are skilled and competent in hands on are scarce in government establishments. Taking the job may open you up to other connections that can get you permanent job in the state public service. Your competencies and professionalism will market you and good Interpersonal relationships will keep you in the circle. So, when you see opportunities like Sky see this keyboard is not working, help them out and be humble.

Note that the above applies only if you are competent and maintain good Interpersonal relationships. Good lucks.

I was also in similar situation. The week I got an offer after my final exams, I got a nomination to be an SA on social media for a new task for committee set up for a certain local govt in Rivers State.

The pay was 75k but the offer I got in Lag was 40% higher. It (the LGA offer) came with accommodation, an opportunity to get lots of money illegally daily from the task force.

Every body advised me to take the govt job, but I decided to relocate and rejected the offer. The task force lasted for 6 months and it was dissolved due to internal crisis. Mind you, my friend who recommended me for the job was able to save over 800k within 4 months.

My take:
1. The offer was good but it needed to advance my career.
2. You know what's good for you, money or career.
3. I'll advixe you to go for the govt job, but be ready for uncertainties.
4. If however, you succeed in the govt job, it may open doors for new positions if you can lobby your way and play the politics.
5. But for me, I can not work for the govt, as a political appointee

Guy stick with your current job.

This your story reminds me of a certain guy I met during my time of pitching a project to one commissioner of a state in Nigeria.

We were invited by the commissioner to evaluate a project my firm will be working on. So, I met this guy, one of the PA to the commissioner, actually the commissioner employed him. That means if the commissioner looses his office, the guy's job is gone too.
We got talking,he told me his life's story, how he's lucky to get the job and his plans to bring his family over if all is settled and to go into politics from there. And for your information, he has a free accommodation too just like the one your new job plans to give you.
After our evaluation, we returned back to our base hoping to start the project soon.

A month later, the government of that state had a serious problem and the commissioner was removed and our project gone with it. You can now guess what happened to my new found friend.
If it is not by the state government and no later of employment, don't go for it.
Just stick to your current job and hope to grow from there.

But when your life is one with risks, you are experiencing, learning, living. A life without risks is not life at all, it's nothing
Re: Should I Stay With My Job Or Go With This New Job? by Ubyy: 7:10pm On Jun 15, 2020
I think you should stay at your current job. Working in a micro finance bank, you could gradually switch jobs and grow your career within the financial/relevant sector.

However, as regards the government job - ‘All that glitters is not gold’. If it was an official appointment, I’d say go for it, but I am not sure you should. When the SA is relieved of his position, you are automatically relieved of your job and back to the job market.

This is my two cents. At the end of the day, follow your instincts.

Brotherly just keep moving on.... You need new grounds... Accept the new job and make the best out of it. If you believe in ur self that u have something to offer then u can start walking ur way up... Attachment to any political office holder directly give you a leverage that only the smart ad wise can easily build on and create a wonderful world of their own out nothing...

A friend of mind started as just a social media aid to an SA my governor that has left office but he has worked his way up that he is now a close confidant to the governor and he even have access to the current governors bedroom.... He is so much in money now but without appointment letter or office... Dont be scared to take a risk except you don't trust what you have in you or know what to do.....
