I'll rather take 450k in 9ja than travel abroad for higher pay. Racial violence and high cost of leaving overseas should be put into consideration. I'll create my own paradise in a desolate land.

Sars is worse than racism if you don't know.

Add tribalism to it and your points no longer hold water.

He can make lots of money in naija without paying tax lol .if I may ask,was tax paid out of the money he made on the online contract he got ,did he pay tax to nigerian government from the job.many are shouting naija is a zoo,the economy abroad is tax based.after tax comes monthly bills ,monthly house rent etc

fairfora:
Tell him loudly.

I paid N200k equivalent every month as rent while living overseas ( US to be precise)and that was btw mid and late 2000s. My friends back home were paying half of that yearly in a fairly good location in lagos as rent. No place like Nigeria. He would would live large with that money and package as a single guy.

Ok, I understand. No maid, no driver,
it definitely can create a need for some adjusting...

Goodvibes007:

He said only a bit. The money, status and privilege that comes with his senior position in Nigeria. It could be hard for some people to adjust. However, he is happy that his kids are growing up in a functional society.

Most Of The Comments Reek Of Ignorance. Though The Living Conditions Are Better, Living Cost Is Not Nearly As Easy As You Guy It Out To Be. Are There No Americans Living In Less Than Average Conditions? If It Was That Easy. Most Americans Work Really Hard And Literally Live On Debt. You Earn On Hourly Basis, D High Earners Are Top Professionals. So Dont Delude Yourselves Into Believing Its All Rosy. Sha Na Who No Get Better Food Chop Dey Mostly Get Longer Throat. And The Reason For All The Imposed Restriction Is Cause Immigrants Are Taking Up More Jobs Making It Difficult For Ordinary Citizens. If U Have Money U Can Be Allowed To Go Visiting If They Knw U'r Not Going To Take Up Their Jobs Or Even Abscond

A salary of 10k may put one in the 40% tax bracket.

That means just about 6k remaining.
House rent 1,500
Insurance and other utilities 1k
Feeding and unforeseen expenses for a single person $400.

So. The savings may not be as much as you think.

Dont forget, the 10k job is not guaranteed.

Wrong!!!

At 120k per annum, federal income tax bracket is 24% and your effective tax rate can be less than 20%.

Also, you do not need to live in a $1,500 per month apartment.

A quick question I want to ask and know hearts of peeps.

His argument is 450,000 Nigerian Naira equals
1,162.97 United States Dollar, wheras in the US / Canada for instance, the salary is way higher.

Question is what do you think ?

I have read everything including all the comments, now this is my own observation; first of all many persons read the title and didn't read the body of your post.
Well, that aside; back to the post.
If you in 9ja and you got a job that earn you 450k naira monthly, and now you coincidentally got a side job that pays you $120k.
What's stopping you from investing with the money and continuing working for the said 450k naira monthly.
Perhaps before year ends, you will hit another Jackpot b4 year end,cuz the microfinance bank will surely tell their counterpart about your good work.
Only go abroad for Vacation............

Let your friend apply for the $7000 job first and get it now before leaving or is the plan to leave Nigeria to another country and hope a good job comes your way when he gets there? cause if hes good as he claims to be nothing stops him from applying for jobs overseas from Nigeria if they see talent they would poach you.

I have a badass programmer pal. Full stack engineer. Recently did a job for someone, and made some real good cash. Like up to $120,000. The money came from building software for 3 microfinance banks in the country.
He earns over 450,000 Naira as salary here in Nigeria as well. We got talking yesterday and he's telling me he cannot stay in Nigeria, that he's resigning immediately after lock down for airports are over.

US/Canada is a lot higher? When considering migrating to a different country, you better not just think about the salary. The cost of living and growth are other factors you may want to consider. Besides this moment what Nigeria needs are innovators, people that can start something up, especially in Tech. If your friend is quite good and he's got a creative independent mind, maybe he should consider starting something up. Nigeria is a market waiting to explode. I hope Nigerians can realize this and get to work before these foreigners take over everything, and leave us with very little to call our own.

A friend left a 900k per month job in Nigeria for Canada, he is regretting it a bit though.

Different strokes for different people. One man's meat is another's poison.

Why would he make this kind of mistake? He should have stuck with the job for years even if he was hell bent on travelling abroad!

Bro... This thing I will tell you is from experience!!
If that your friend don't have anyone over there or a job waiting for him, he should just maintain his 450K... It's not always greener at the other side, I guess too much of Nollywood has eaten deeply in the minds of Nigerian that whoever leave the shores of the country becomes made automatically....
I have 2 friends currently who were doing fine in Nigeria, eventually they became self made millionaires, but the thought of leaving Nigeria engulfed their cranium, they shaah left, I wished i can send our WhatsApps conversation here... As I'm talking to you now, Na me de send them money sometimes just to feed oO... The image of Nigeria has been tarnished beyond repair, skill anyone can acquire, I just wish him Good luck

Please which countries did they leave to? Legal or illegal migration? Did they study in universities over there? What kind of schools? I understand my questions are quite personal but since it's a faceless forum, maybe you could breakdown things. I ask because the entire picture should be shown.

Thanks.

My initial education was Nigerian. I had to go back to a Canadian Uni for the extra 16months program. It worked like magic. Yes they hold their own education in high esteem. If I hadn't done that program, who knows if I would still be on my security job.
This thing ehhn, it requires a lot of patience and planning.
Now my wife and I rake over $200k a year. After taxes at source, we are still left with around 135k to 140k. After all bills, expenses, remittance to naija, and other payments, we are still saving $50k per year.

Most people here don't understand how the USA works....lol. Yoiu can be making 200,000 dollars a year and not be able to save 10,000 dollars a year. You can be making that amount and still be in debt, I love how innocent and clueless most Nigerians are when it comes to life in America grin grin.

Now the koko, the question is not whether he should leave Nigeria but how? If he plans on using visiting visa, he'll be on a long thing, it might take him 5 to 7 years to even smell $80,000 USD per year. If he's very talented and already has a job offer with H1B visa then he might be luckier and reach his potential a lot quicker.

I have seen a lot of guys with dreams of gold and el dorado come here and end up being stuck, they have no path to citizenship, begging white women or akata to file for them. Those who fail to plan, plan to fail!

I thought Donald suspended it till the end of the year? Regarding your last statement, they came in legally or illegally? They studied in US' universities or continued using Nigerian degrees?

He should go. I was assuming he already had the job. If that's the case then, after tax, he should have 70% left ($84k). If he is wise he should:

1. contribute fully to a retirement plan (e.g. 401k), up to the $19kmax pre-tax, and usually employer will add in up to 4%
2. save half remainder salary every year. $32k. This can buy/build property in Naija after his first year abroad, which he can rent out.
3. live frugally. Do not start living like other middle class Americans - that leads to perpetual wage slavery
4. buy a good used car, like a Camry, not more than $4k in cash. Let your friends laugh at you. You're buying US stocks and Nigeria real estate.
5. don't flex girl.
6. ideally, stay there for 4-5 years with an eye to settle back home. Your investments will be earning for you even if you have no job in Naija.
7. only when you're back in Nigeria should you start a family. Wife and kids in US will wipe out all your earnings.
8. I say don't flex girl. You're not there to fall in love and spend 20 years of your life living to feed others.

Thanks for this.

First tell your friend to leave the country
The country is not safe for anybody
Nothing is proper here.

One reason why I am leaving this country now is because every young boy doing well now is tagged a yahoo boy.

My friend who we trade forex together was arrest because the Nigerian police don’t even know what forex is. The more my friend was explaining the more the policemen kept calling him a yahoo boy. He had to pay them before they let him go. Can u imagine such rubbish.

Oboy if u can leave this country, go to a place where racism isn’t too much. Even in Nigeria there is tribal/religious indifferences.

Now here in Benin City, if u are a yahoo boy u are not safe, if you are doing legit hustle u are not safe.
