Hello Friend,

I advice you as a Programmer doing Website Design & Software development and not a Website designer.

I am also assuming you said "Programming" as a career switch and not website design.

If family or girlfriend is not in the way, go to a good computer college and enroll for C++ & Java programming or Python. You can even write oracle Java certification later on to boost your career.

To succeed in anything, you will need a considerable amount of time learning, practice and internalising. You will be patient while learning and honing your skills.

Don't waste time with YouTube or online coding schools. It's for those that already know their way around coding.

Do not go for HTML5, css and JavaScript lessons. Do not go for new and shiny stuffs like Js and the likes. You can add those later when you have mastered Core programming languages.

Web Design is not real career. Don't come to be begging for website design on Nairaland.com like a good number of us.

Take this advice from a 39yo man like you and you will not regret it.

Cheers.
Good day..
Please what languages do u think I should really concentrate on as someone that wants to learn full stack web development??

JavaScript can make mobile apps with react native. Can make desktop applications with electron can be used in machine learning with tensorflowjs. Can be used in the back end with nodejs. It has come far and it's just growing tremendously.

That's your problem then.. Cuz my and my fellow tech friends, we still ball and some have stable relationships.

If you choose to prioritize programming over your relationship, you're doing yourself. There should be a balance. You just don't know how to do it

what is this?? So are you telling me that to build a CRUD functional web app you need to know linear algebra??
It's not about math, it's about thinking logically, and well that comes over time.

Whoever the OP is, yes there are some areas you might consider delving into that will require Math of some sort, but that could always be learnt. The most important thing is that you learn to think logically and analytically.

Don't mind those guys oo..they are bad belle people grin grin

You are right though..over time when you have a solid footing then you can easily socialize..I like the fact that you are able to blend the two together though, not everyone are able to do that if we are going to be honest. wink

U still did not mention anywhere JavaScript is used for games. OK let me help you.

Being a full time gamedev, I know the unity engine supported both c# and JavaScript for scripting years ago BT they've stopped support for javascript for quite a while now. Also they are quite a lot of frameworks to make web games with JavaScript.

But my point is u can't really make (its called Triple A) games with JavaScript i.e high end graphics games for PCs,Xbox and PlayStation. One needs either c++(unreal engine) or c#(unity engine which is also built with c++ and also uses c++ compiler)

I think u get my point.
Nd FYI I'm well acquainted with the react library, electron, three js(do u know this?) as well as a some other JavaScript frameworks.

Also same can b said for c#. with unity u can build mobile apps(well gaming apps "majorly" ), with Microsoft windows form(and others) u can write desktop apps, with asp.net u can write web application, with ml.net u can build machine learning models.

I have just been following and watching how some person are talking down web development..

The world is moving to the net...

Pls Sir I will advice you go for full stack web development....Learn HTML, CSS JAVASCRIPT, PHP OR NODE. JS, Python, learn it to the full...

All those asking to design web site for people on nairaland are mainly WordPress expect... They is more to web development that WordPress....

And Pls be very careful... Most people talking like computers gurus here don't really know what there are saying and her not gurus...

LOOK OUT THE DEMAND... What are the demands for software and programmer In Nigeria? Very low and poor......

But everyone need a web site... From next year the demand for website will increase and keep on increasing as the year goes up...

Note : most Nigeria companies don't use Nigeria made software, there prefer to buy from outside

Look bro, maybe you one of those lucky with impeccable analytical and quantitative skills, even more is that you didn't start at 40 but for most, its a lot of sacrifice. Even more they can bear.

Am not a programmer, don't plan to be but after for someone like me who study computer engineering, computer science and education, with quite a few training from Aptech and the likes in their early years, over 20yrs in the IT industry, i know core programmers don't live the regular social life. They have their moments and know how to catch their fun but their best days are usually in front of a note pad or computer, thinking of how to make a software or machines work.

I don't know it all but with what I know, at age 40, OP had better stick to something lite....

you are right. the person you quoted must have been so lucky. Like me now, i want to go on toruism to many states in Nigeria but work won't let me. It is not easy to be a coder, for you to earn higher you need to learn more skills which tells on your social life. i just don't want to be a killjoy but the OP should just forget it, except he want to learn for fun o

I'm interested in back-end development so I'm currently learning Oop Php. I also have interest in Data analysis and database administration.
what is the right path to follow?
does Php have anything to do with data analysis and database administration?

my question could be confusing but I hope you understand it

I just turned 40 and six months ago I had no clue of music production though I had always been a music person. Many years ago when I was young my family beat me out of my early music career on grounds of turning into a bad boy. I had to agree with them at some point and moved on to other things but I still had passion for it.

Early this year I finally set up my own music studio and began to learn...six months later I am doing jobs.

Nothing is impossible... give it a shot

Back-end development will require you to be proficient with a server-side language like PHP and databases like MySQL, PostgreSQL, etc (Relational databases) or MongoDB(non-relational databases). As a back-end developer, your knowledge of databases doesn't need to be advanced like that of a Database administrator but it should be proficient enough for you to build applications with good performance.

PHP is not needed for data analysis as it involves working with large datasets, languages like Python and R are used. Database administrators use SQL or similar but if you do back-end development you will use query languages like SQL or NoSQL and interact with the data from the database with PHP or any server-side language.

Of course you can do it and excel, age is but a number what really matters is your dedication, and how many hours you allocate to learning per day. And you interest in it.

Best of luck.

Yes you can but you must be willing to learn and work and ask questions on nairaland programming section when things go wrong. I will advise you learn JavaScript as it is the direction of the future. If you are targeting application development (web and mobile) learn JavaScript. If you are targeting networking, data science and cybersecurity learn Python.
which is most lucrative?

You are 100% correct, sir. PHP is still highly relevant. I started with PHP and MySQL. I respect PHP, I respect its simplicity. Its shortcomings won't be a noticeable problem for your Church web application with only 20k visitors per day. I am not trying to mislead people, you can google everytime I said. I was only pointing to reasons why big organizations don't use it for their products. The only viral app still on PHP is Facebook, and it's not even on traditional PHP. Because it is open-source, they collected the source code, improved a lot on it by re-writing some areas of the compiler. You can use any programming language you like. But, once your application/software is getting more users, you must start considering some factors, especially the compile-time, which is slower in PHP that its other counterparts like Java.

Maj196:
Oga php is still relevant and it's not going anytime soon.. You can take that to the bank. Feel free to use whatever language you want but don't mislead anyone here. About efficiency everything has its shortcomings

You should have a problem you wanna solve. If you go into programming with a mindset of making money. You would end up confused and quickly tired. On the way, you would make money, trust me.... I first had a mindset of money back in college, and it was a terrible experience until i sought to solve a problem, it became interesting, and i would wanna know everything and everyway.... Now i work remotely for a tech company in canada....

Is it possible to be both?
