You can learn anything at any age and be incredible at it. Even if you want to study medicine at age 40, you can and still be an incredible doctor. cool

Hello Friend,

I advice you as a Programmer doing Website Design & Software development and not a Website designer.

I am also assuming you said "Programming" as a career switch and not website design.

If family or girlfriend is not in the way, go to a good computer college and enroll for C++ & Java programming or Python. You can even write oracle Java certification later on to boost your career.

To succeed in anything, you will need a considerable amount of time learning, practice and internalising. You will be patient while learning and honing your skills.

Don't waste time with YouTube or online coding schools. It's for those that already know their way around coding.

Do not go for HTML5, css and JavaScript lessons. Do not go for new and shiny stuffs like Js and the likes. You can add those later when you have mastered Core programming languages.

Web Design is not real career. Don't come to be begging for website design on Nairaland.com like a good number of us.

Take this advice from a 39yo man like you and you will not regret it.

Cheers.
Spot on !

Yes you can but you need strong motivation and focus to achieve this. Don't be carried away with all the rah rah about the many frameworks available out there. Just try to learn the basis and the rest will follow once you're well grounded.

If you say mentor,no problem but you needing a teacher is absolutely not necessary

Programming is something you can learn on your own. Suggestions are like asshole, each one of us have one.So I would implore you sit down and do your research into various programming fields you can explore, and figuring out the "how to get started"

I ve taken the most unconventional approach to learning programming.
Being unserious in secondary school, it affected my progress in 2018.
You need to settle any problem you have with math if you dont want any issues. Google pdfdrive.com and download in this order developmental math for college students, college algebra and trigonometry, linear algebra, classical geometry, calculus, advanced calculus, vector calculus, ordinary and partial differential equations. If you want to avoid begging to build websites on nairaland, avoid web development, android or any shiny applications until you're theoretically grounded.

Meanwhile recursion and nested loops take my eye see wieeen, learning how to print pattern for somebody who is not maths inclined is hard

Can you reach out to me at emini_akin@yahoo.com, if you are very good on programming, iI might have something for you

This is a very wrong and disjointed take. How can one double down on a fallacy? Think about the young souls you'll mislead with this and ask God for forgiveness.

some of you here don't get that web design is different from web development.

And no, building a website with wordpress doesn't make one a front end developer.
PS:
Front end developers are still in high demand

I am over 40. Over the years, I have been a Database Admin, Application Support Staff and currently I am a Newtork Administrator. During this lockdown, I started programming. I has not been easy but I have no doubt that I will be a Master in the next 12 -8months. So, you can do it too.

The thread is filled with many ignorant answers. Javascript that came out in 1995 the same time as java is what is called new and shiny. The same javascript that is being used in machine learning with tensorflowjs and can be used to make desktop applications with electron.

OP pls dont take this advice he doesn't know what his saying just start with programming language that has simple syntax e.g python or c++ for you to get the basic concept and it depends on what you want to achieve you can search on google or ask for help for better guidance

I dont blame them o. It is those 10k website development people I blame. One even said android development is outdated alongside web development at a time when most people are moving applications to the web. You are having full scale desktop applications running on browsers today and its outdated.

Well, that was my initial thought about coding until I started seeing some testimonies of folks that doesn't have such background neither did they work on that, but proclaiming how they became programmers. Well am coming from an Engineering background (civil) so am quiet abreast with the maths terms.
Is it really maths inclined

No you cannot you are wasting your time. Do something else that is easy. Be a carpenter. Nonsense. At 40 you can still be asking stupid questions. Please say it to your wife or to your mates and see if you will not receive insults and a dirty slap.

Yes, it is possible. just a few changes. I'm an average programmer in python not even proficient, and there was a time I want to work on an android app, I picked up the syntax within two weeks to achieve what I want. Not a complicated task, though. Just a simple day to day application. You know Android studio is Java.

Remember, one can pick up the language quickly, but proficiency takes a lot of practice. One must be using it to solve problems daily to be proficient. Programming is not for everybody, especially people that can’t sit down in one place for so long. I have a similar problem, I can’t stay in one place for many hours. That’s why I prefer the architect side of it and leave the coding parts for others. You write a program for 1hr, you debug for 5hrs. That's why Introverts do better in coding.

Meel:

Can someone proficient in Python( grounded in its Ds and Algorithm) also learn Java within a month.

Lol. There's actually no harm in trying. He can try. The thing is many of these people are more interested in more than they have passion for programming. At the end, they fall out soon and look to do other things. I know many people who started but lost out.
