Hello guys.

I want to apologize about the question I want to ask, I know if I do an intensive research I would get my answers but I just need to get responses quicker.

I have a family member in the US that has been asking me to find out about schools in the US and report back.

But I have been reluctant to since I have no knowledge about the schooling in US and visa related stuff.

So guys please what's the procedure to school in the US.

Note:

I want to go for BSc as I am having issues rounding up my BSc in Nigeria here.

Sponsoring BSC is no joke.if it not your parents financially there then might be better to finish in nigeria. .... if you are sure that the family will stand by you for 4 years then go ahead but you have to be absolutely sure

Procedure for school, read the thread , check google and you see all your answers

thanks for the information.
Then I take advantage of the system by applying for a scholarship that will only be sufficient for my tuition but not feeding and accommodation
Then I can use the feeding and accommodation as a basics for applying to work outside campus.

As for the studies don't bother about it whether I read or not I will pass excellently.

I just need something to get out of this country legally, I believe that 40hour-Week job will even pay more than one of the most lucrative jobs in Nigeria.

Brother, you'd make much more from focusing on your studies than doing off-campus work when you don't really need it.

Do you know why Nigerians do better than Mexicans despite both being hustlers? According to what I read somewhere, don't know how genuine it is. It is because while a Mexican is comfortable working a job for 2 years, his Nigerian counterpart starting at the same time with him would be looking for certifications and extra skills to climb up the ladder and earn more.

My point is, if you can get a full ride, focus on the school, read and get a stellar GPA, apply for conferences and external scholarships to build yourself, take extra online courses, if you're going for biology or anything in STEM, try to know a bit of coding even if it's HTML and CSS. There might be on campus jobs for 20hrs/week, this in addition to your full ride is good money. Build yourself to be employable after college. If you do this, it's better than stressing yourself working off campus when you don't really need to do so.

Look at life after that 4 years in college. If you're getting a full ride, I don't see why you would so much want to still work ilegally or say it's full tuition you want and not a full ride.

working in the US on F1 VISA is illegal. It's only legal when you're doing internship in the summer and when you work on campus (20hrs/week) jobs.

Additionally, after your 1 year in college. If you can demonstrate financial hardship, prove to them that your sponsor is dead or can't provide you with funds again. You might be allowed to work off campus legally on F1 VISA for 40hrs/week.

But since you're looking for a full ride, you would not meet the last criteria because there would be no basis for "financial hardship".

And to keep your scholarship, focusing on your studies should be Paramount, not work.
OK thanks

You have all the wrong intentions. Hustling should NOT be what you focus on when you are planning to study. It is very clear already what you want to do. Do not let your desperation lead you to making wrong choices.

Like how much is the stipend?

It depends on the school... You could get a fully funded scholarship that covers Tuition, Accommodation, a meal plan...

Some might come with a small stipend, others won't.

I just needed to know how the process work to report back, since I am not the one footing the bill.

Thank for everything.

You don't have to apologize. The amount of knowledge acquired when you carry out your own research is astounding vast and will come in handy..

Personally, I haven't been to the US or Canada.. Aside a few West African Countries, I have only been to Spain, France and Germany all on a single schengen visa but I can speak on immigration issues regarding most countries because I have done my due diligence...

Let's learn to research stuff our selves.

Hello All,
Please I want to study in the U.S.A university for a master Degree but I obtained a Higher National Diploma in a Nigerian polytechnic.
Please what will I need to do ? Am I going to apply for masters straight with a Higher National Diploma Diploma or my Diploma result have to be scrutinized first? Please I need advice or guidelines about how to carry out this mission with a Higher National Diploma from a Nigerian polytechnic so as to obtain a master degree in the U.S.A

Get both the OND and HND transcript and have it sent to WES or ECE. (visit these evaluation agencies' website to learn more).
Before you do that, do your research on the program you want to study, cost of attendance, opportunity for funding, and choose which school promise the best. You just don't apply to any school; you apply to schools that offer what you need and want, or you may later realize that you got the wrong type of admission.

So, I will recommend you search for schools first as this is the most difficult part. Also, the school you settle for determines whether you will evaluate or not as not every university in the US requires transcript evaluation. So don't evaluate yet. And yes, you can use your OND and HND combined.
If there's anything you don't understand during the process, ask questions. There's always someone willing to answer.

When someone said people who have left Nigeria forget how it feels to be here and trying to figure out their lives, a lot of people said that wasn't true.

I hate to be that person, but here's a post from you a few years back, asking the EXACT SAME QUESTION that person asked. Probably before you left the shores of Nigeria.

BarristerAlarig:
Hey famz,

Does anyone know any British university that accepts National diploma (lower credit) into a top up degree programme?? If you do, kindly comment.

You can always Google things, yes, and while I agree that the person should've done some personal research, the reason I was admitted on a fully funded fellowship was because I had support from people willing to answer my questions. There's a particular school I didn't apply to because I had travelled to the US on vacation a year prior and happened to meet the Department chair, who told me bluntly that there was no funding and the department was struggling. On the website, they said people were "welcome to apply". Proof that nothing beats human interaction.

I know in Nigeria it's considered disrespectful to question people older than us, and you probably are much older than me, but please sir, even if you wanted to direct them to do their own personal research, I feel you could've done it much nicer. This thread probably wouldn't exist if we could find everything we're looking for in Nigeria. We're all simply trying to better our lives.

I did do my research. I learnt it wasn't possible but an agent said it was. I only came here to confirm. It wasn't for myself too. I have said it before, what I said wasn't intended to be malicious in anyway.

Hello everyone, so my sister recieve her I-20 from Missouri State University last week for MBA. start date is Aug 17th 2020.
Tuition = $11,570 SEVIS FEE= $350.

Now, is it wise to proceed with the online option for studies due to the pandemic? Should she defer? What other options does she have?

P.S - She wasn't offered GA/TA/RA.

Thanks in anticipation

Good day guys, I have been following this forum for quite some time now and it has been really informative. I have a friend that graduated with a third class 2.23/5.00 Biochemistry. She already applied for WES evaluation as well as preparing for GRE, as she wants to apply for masters in biology for Fall 2021. Can someone please help with list of schools she can apply to with this grade in the US with funding. Thank you.

With funding might be really hard, but tell her to do extraordinarily well on the GRE, from there it'll be possible to evaluate her options.

Would she want to pay that money for something that may not give her access to the opportunities that she seeks? Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that there's a certain amount of time that you have to be in the US to qualify for OPT et al? She may have to consult her school officials, especially the international and career office, for the best line of action.

alot of people here did BSc for undergraduate so that might be why you've not been answered. A lot of people have gone through this process in previous threads so you can try to search. You'd see a lot of references. From what I know, not all schools accepts HND and you would need WES evaluation.

You'd need to do a lot of searching, mostly on Nairaland, because I believe this is the best website to get answers to your situation.

You are very correct.

@Cassidyice, your first step to being admitted is to evaluate your transcript with WES. When that is done, you have no more headache to worry about. You are as the same as the Nigerian BSC only that you have to look for schools that accept WES which are the majority

Hello dear, I feel like I might be in a good position to make recommendations on this. Seeing that she is interested in pursuing graduate research in the biological sciences. Please note that there are only a few programs out there in the biological and biomedical sciences that require the GRE. From observation, most of these programs are in the R2 category. So she might be surprised to find out that she ends up not using the GRE. On the other hand, I'd still encourage you to take the test,

On the second note, though the cumulative GPA is quite below par, if she amassed a higher GPA in her last few credit hours, I. E in your last two semesters, then it might just be enough to make a case for her admission to an MSc. Though I will still advice her to target R2 universities especially if she doesn't have a very good research experience. Most of these universities are keen on teaching, so there is a tendency she might be offered an AI, I'll recommend a few later.

On funding, masters students are usually not automatically fully funded, and most top programs don't even run a masters in biological and biomedical sciences. And the ones that offer, only give a fellowship to one or two admits each application cycle, and these are usually citizens. If she wants to be considered for funding prior to enrollment, then she might want to contact PI's perhaps one might be willing to offer her a RA or might want her to act as an AI. She might also want to contact the GC for AI positions. Though even if they agreed on this, it's usually contingent on your enrollment for the first semester.

My final thoughts : she should write the GRE and score at least a 150 in either the verbal or quantitative session. And then She should only apply to programs that require the GRE. I'd recommend R2 programs, this is because her GPA might be questionable if she does apply to programs that don't require the GRE. Also perhaps she has some research experience, perhaps an honors thesis, she should consider perusing on research that interests her and then contacting the authors, this is one of the most effective way of getting into a grad program with funding.

My other suggestions would be that she does an MSc here in Nigeria and gets a good GPA, with very fine tuned research experience, and then apply for a PhD (if that's her overall goal).

A few of the universities I'd recommend are:

Stevens Institute of technology (SIT) they have a good chemical biology program.

St John's University (SJU) their biology program is good too.

Ohio University (OU) they have a program in molecular biology.

Try contacting the GC's or graduate recruiters to let them know if you can be considered for admission with your GPA. And last I heard these programs required the GRE.

This can be lengthy, but I hope it helps, please feel free to contact me if you do have any other questions.

Cheers!

Your friend need not to bother herself with schools right now. All she need to do is spend more time on studying and how to ace her GRE. Her GPA is quite low and all she can do to make up for the deficient GPA is to score 300 and above in GRE, get good letter of Recommendations too, write a well articulated statement of purpose.

Remember, for every profile there's always a school for you in the UNITED STATE OF AMERICA.

Meanwhile, Most of us ended up not applying to schools we actually wanted

I wish I could like this post a thousand times more. Some people will just be forming commando on a public forum bullying the slightest JJC. They have forgotten how they were once like that. If we check, folks that are guilty of this used to ask the most questions when they started, but either form oversabi or snub when someone else does.
Abeg nobody is a fountain of knowledge o and people will always make errors. It's either you guide the supposed newbie, or if you are feeling like a Chairman, then simply waka pass. Nobody forced you to answer anyway. A little kindness hurts nobody.

If you don't already use reddit, I think you should, and there are a few subreddits I'd like to share

r/gradadmissions for graduate admissions related questions

r/gradschool after being admitted

r/ *insert your school name here* e.g r/stanford. Some schools name their subs after something else e.g their mascot, for example the University of Washington's subreddit is r/huskies I think. I've already joined the Stanford chess team thanks to people I met there, and we meet every Sunday. So in case you don't know anyone, or have any questions peculiar to your particular school, you can always post there. As a prospective student of a school, you can also ask questions in their sub but not too often because it's mostly for people who are already members of that school.

r/GRE was VERY VERY HELPFUL in helping me stay motivated and prepared for the GRE, anytime I'd finished studying for the day I'd scroll through looking at questions people posted trying to see if I could answer them, and I also posted questions I thought were too hard for me when I needed help. Also, there are a lot of ambitious people there, so you'll feel equally motivated to post your own great score too.

r/toefl, not so much, it's really just a few Indians and people don't post often but maybe you might find it useful. Btw, if you can do well on the GRE, TOEFL should be a walk in the park

r/ApplyingtoCollege for undergraduate admissions related questions

There are lots more, and if you don't find what you're looking for there, Nairaland is always here to ask questions specific to the Nigerian situation.

cc phenomenalopeye because you ask a lot of undergrad related questions that not many people here seem to be able to answer.
