Brandonx: I wanted to ask same question. We don't really have smart people in Nigeria. Across developed worlds, there are many shoprite types scattered across and none stopped one from growing. The Nigeria market is extremely difficult to do business. U don't have electricity, u don't have water, u have terrible roads, u have crazy tax here and there, u have dubious employees, the list goes on. It is not easy to run a business in Nigeria. awhybliss: No they just didn't make any profit within the last 2 years and don't see the need to stay in the Nigerian market. Although I'm indifferent to this news their exit will affect other businesses in the same mall that needed that pull of shoprite to attract more customers. |

I want to agree but we all know the government will stiffle those "local supermarkets" with ridiculous taxes and levies. I don't care for Shoprite but will the government ever let local businesses thrive? How many businesses from years ago are still in existence? Think about it. If Shoprite with all its worth has chosen to vacate Nigeria, how much harder will it be for "local supermarkets" that do not have access to as much money as Shoprite? 3 Likes |
