Well, in the 17th and 18 th century it was very bad, and until the 19th century if you were an Irish Catholic , your rights to some extent were restricted.

But to be frank it has always been a nationalist issue, since the 12th century when England tried to take over Ireland. It got an added religious dimension in the 16th century when England became Protestant and Ireland remained Catholic.

And the intolerance on both sides was bad.

But to be frank the English-Irish conflict was more secular than religious
