Thanks for chipping in. First things first, if your academics are not excellent (the very best), you may as well forget these schools. And it's for your own good because the competition you would find in class is unlike something you have ever seen. drDoom3: |

kastgeraldino:That is why I dislike when people talk about "dream" schools. What makes people pick out dream schools? Mostly prestige. And they put all their hopes in getting into those schools, then get heartbroken after being rejected. I prefer schools of best fit, schools where you know that based on your personality and strengths, you'll survive and thrive. That was why, even when my SAT score came out and pressure came from all corners to apply to MIT or Harvard, I refused. I know that I am the kind of person that prefers a highly competitive environment, but not a cut-throat one, and a place where I would have better access to my professors. So I did my research and choose a college that I felt I would thrive the most in. |

I wish I was as wise as you. When I was younger, I was arrogant and wanted to show or prove how smart I was. Had I known, I would have chosen a better environment rather than a place where you would work very hard to be average. I could have been a valedictorian at most schools. I remember a professor saying, "we may fail you, but you are still the best". drDoom3: |

drDoom3:Thanks y'all I really appreciate❣️ Pls I just need anyone to suggest 3 safeties that i can apply to in order to make my list of schools 10 but in this case where SAT isn't administered is there any way out? Anyways I've been sending emails across all schools to be really sure the're really test optional, in my email I made mention the international passport required to take the test and made the admission office aware that I can't take the test without my IP also SAT isn't administered amidst the pandemic and their response was all positive they said I won't be penalized/ disadvantaged in the holistic admission process, or should I shift my application to next year in order to take the test and be on a safer side? Also the deadline for the EducationUSA thingy is may 31 |

gaeul:I'm not knowledgeable concerning NON-STEM but all I can say is if you need funding your best bet willmbebto write GRE but if you only want admission then you can target schools that are waiving GRE. |

Phenomenalopeye:Wanted to say look at some HBCU like Howard etc ... but I think the ones I remember still ask for WES |
| Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 15 by EstherAI: 8:38pm On Aug 06, 2020 |
LagosismyHome:Most HBCUs also doesn't specifically base on WES. They also accept evaluated transcript from any other NACES members. If he doesn't want to use WES he could try other NACES members that works too. |

Phenomenalopeye:you don't want to take the SAT, you don't want to evaluate. In this journey, some commitments and sacrifices ought to be made. Cc: Drdoom3 can tell you that because this is his second year of application. I think the SAT is still open this year, to have a shot at those big schools you mention or even smaller schools, please take the SAT. If you're planning to apply to HBCUs, you can target the ones that don't need evaluation but to be on the safest side, evaluate. Because you might find out that they issue full ride with 1100 SAT and 3.5 GPA. Someone with that stats will get it but you with 1500 and 3.9 unevaluated GPA won't get it. Make some investments. You can't expect to have everything free and rely on luck. It might work but if you can increase your chances, please do. |

Thank you for this Information, I have been searching for universities that do not require the GRE for MSc. Computer Science but also can award funding. I just checked University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign CS programme. They even give consideration for work experience in lue of low CGPA in some cases. Thank you. Just to add, some programmes in some Universities/schools are waiving the GRE due to COVID-19 until fall 2021. For example, Texas Tech University Toxicology department is waiving the GRE till Fall 2021. For those who may want to know, All Universities are not the same, while some will not consider you for funding if you do not have GRE (for STEM courses), some may grant you funding on the bases of your relevant work experience. One may need to do some research on that. pdjohnson: |

Kimzylove:Most US schools will offer you undergraduate admission, even if you're 25 or 28 (so long you can defend why you're just applying at this age). However, at the US embassy, age is a factor when consular is considering the credibility of an undergraduate student. In most cases, you should be under 23 when applying for F1 visa as undergraduate student. 23 isn't even safe or that it won't be frown with questions; in cases I have seen on and off this thread, strong answers had to be used, and there were students who never got their visas. For example, I have students who insisted they would go through EducationUSA membership, but the agency also work with age limit, that is, being under 23--for undergraduate. For Daniel who I mentioned earlier, he was 22 when he applied for his F1 last fall, and was even refused despite being EducationUSA member. I guess the preparation EAC gave him and the type of consular he met didn't work together. We had to work again on the answers and he was approved the second time. Age 16 is very ideal for both admission and visa, especially if the student SAT is strong and admission comes with funding. I'd not recommend any student travel to the US for undergraduate studies without full-ride or something close to 90% funding, except your sponsor is a Nigerian politician or a magnate. More so, there's sea of opportunities for young people. I currently have young men that represented their schools in 3 international conferences last year; we all connected from this thread, including one fully sponsored by Visa Card. I am sharing this extra information to let potential undergraduate students here know that if you pay your price in SAT, attention to school searching, mingling with potential undergraduate students like yourself, the reward can be huge. The funding you get is like a badge; you carry it throughout the studies and the school usually recognize you as one of their best, for example honors. Best of luck! |

I think it's healthy for our relationship with people that when we talk with those we don't really know their age, background, etc, we should "show" respect or communicate it in our choice of words. It's sometimes funny how some people address people they don't know anything about on this thread. I have communicated with bank managers, branch managers, millionaires with thriving business, mothers, fathers, and even people that occupy influential position in their professions from this forum. Same for several young people. Some of us who are very active here must have had the same experience. Respect is for all people, no matter what you may happen to do for them in the future. Using "Hey" is very fine and goes well with all people--both in the first world and in the third world nations. But using "Kiddo", in my opinion, can send a bad message. Kiddo means child or kid. I mean, we shouldn't really address people with that when you don't know them? First impression, good impression, respect for all people, communicating with the right words--says a lot about who we are than the people we are communicating with. I am even very slow at identifying young men and women I have talked with on this thread as my junior, let alone using kiddo. This is my opinion though. But I understand the perspective you're talking from. sheke01: |

zeeLady:Hi, I am quite surprised to hear this, though I still think there might be some truths in it. And perhaps I'm not familiar with admission into Ms programs. But while this might be the case in some MS program, this is not often the case in a PhD program. Funding in a STEM PhD program at any good R1 university is often not contingent on having a GRE, provided the GRE was not stated as a requirement for admission. If you're offered admission into a PhD program in STEM you'll often be awarded a combination of fellowships, and AIs or RAs. In such cases the GRe is never a requirement for funding. But perhaps some universities do require having a good GRE scores for funding in an MS program, this is quite true, because in the first place MS programs are usually not automatically fully funded. So only about 10per of a cohort might be awarded funding and they are often selected based off of stellar GRE scores, If you're applying for an MS in CS, I'd advice that you take the GRE, it'll sure increase your chances of funding! |

pdjohnson:you actaully tend to clear my curiousity but a nasty experience at my last interview: Despite presenting a GRE score (score not too impressive overall but high on analytical writing; lawyer with several years research experience but not numerical kills et al) demanded by the VO who is an Indian American I guess, I was still handed the S.214 or something. GRE was never a requirement for my PhD program and never ever mentioned or demanded by the school. I made him understand this but he rascibly persisted on having it. I was previously denied and I probably thought he was never ready to reverse that decision. His body language was "I was dead on arrival". I have asked same question again on Quora. I requested a retired VO to tell me categorically if I should go get a GRE (previous one having expired). My supervisor up to the Director of my school were furious at the 2 denials and said there were no basis for such (first denial VO said how could I leave my family of 3 kids minors for 4 years even when I said they would be visiting and my wife is entrepreneur who has 6 employees, further explanation, she said I was preaching her). This is the least of my worries now cos I have moved on with other plans. |
