Dear Experienced parents and child development experts,

I have a 4-year old child suffering from mild autism which was discovered when he was two. As a concerned parent, i have taken steps by spending a lot in hiring speech and behavioural therapist, and seeing a development pediatrician with some success achieved at least in getting him stable to be able to absorb what he's being taught in class.

With diagnosis done confirming the mildness, i was encouraged to allow him do things regular children do which will help him grow out of the disorder.

Now i noticed that he has memory challenge in terms of ability to retain and recall information especially in his study which is a big concern to me. He also dislikes reading and writing but enjoy visual-based instructions.

In light of above, i need help from parents who have gone through this challenging phase with such kids and also autistic child development experts on how I can help my child over come the short term memory problem, repetition of words, writing and reading.

Please help!!!

Please join streams of joy on Facebook NSPPD from Mondays to Fridays 7-8am and watch what God would do for you and your child

I would advise that you don't put this child under immerse pressure just to measure up with his peers.
It takes autistic kids time to achieve developmental milestones. Since he is at the mild of the spectrum, give him time and allow him to build capacity for more complex tasks. This comes by constantly and repetitive practice.

Wishing you all the best

Please tell me what solution your so called "pragmatism" has provided. Autism has been with us so long, yet ur "pragmatism" has not brought any solution.

Op, your solution lies in Jesus. God created that child, him alone can cure him. God is the manufacturer and he has spare parts for everything he created.
Shut up. Why will he want to manufacture parts when he can make perfect humans?

I have an 8 year old son who was diagnosed as autistic and mentally handicapped at age 3.
He didn't talk till age 5 plus.
However now he is on a regular schol and his IQ is above average.
It was a long battle.
Please start by using the teaching aids that interest him.
People criticised me for letting him so long on the computer but that was the way i wsd able to reach him initially.
I have made a video where I spoke about my journey.

Why do you have 4-old in school in the first place memorising sh.it? The child is suppose to be playing and exploring. Just putting so much pressure on the poor kid. If the parents are these worried, what do you think will happen to this kid, he will be crushed if care is not taken.

Hi, I just read your post and would like to be of help. I'm an ABA therapist based in California and could provide you with intervention therapy that would definitely help you out. You would however need to be able to identify the target behavior(s) in order to identity replacement behavior (s) that would help. Let me know if you are interested.
All the best.

I think you should also consult an experienced and qualified hypnotherapist.

They should be able to help your child unlock the portions of his mind that he might not have access to.

Please you don't have to quote me cos I didn't reply you. You should learn to respect people's opinions and views without looping into it. Give your own suggestions and let others be. This is what I believe in and I own you no explanation on why I should hold this believe. So please, stop quoting people unnecessary. Proffer your own solution and move on. I am a Christian and I believe in the power of prayers, which has been working for me and my family, so if you don't believe in it, that is your business.

Your belief should remain personal.
Or did the op mention anywhere that she's a Christian?
Learn to keep religion out of things like this.
Keep your religion to yourself.

Poor kid, exposed so much pressure at a tender age. A four year old kid in school memorising? Please, don't crush your kid. Listen to real professional dealing with people with autism and also talk with autistic people about what you shouldn't do to your kid. Don't let them suffer for your failures, every kid deserve to grow their own way. A child with autism will grow to be an adult with autism, you can either allow them to grow in their way and be successful at what they love or you crush the with your selfishness.

An autistic child and a child with down syndrome, which is worse?

Down's syndrome is a syndrome. That means in layman's terms, it has no cure but is caused by a gene mutation.

Autism is a developmental disorder which occurs in many children and has a broad spectrum (it manifests itself in different ways in different children. It is a "mental disorder" which often times can be corrected with early intervention.

Due to its genetic form, many individuals who have Down's syndrome tend to have a wide range of health problems later in life such as renal failure, heart defects, heart problems, and others. They often don't live long due to these health conditions.

Autistic individual often grow out of it and usually have no health problems associated with the disorder. They live full lives and function normally in the society.

I understand what you mean. You didn't mean to be rude in your question. I have answered it.

avoid giving your child any foods high in glycemic index! Always check glycemic index ofany foods given to your child. Sugar, white bread, rice are high in glycemic index. PLEASE take time to read effects of foods on memory and mental health

I can give you someones contact.
Her daughter is about 5 years now and I saw improvements.

I once gave her banana leaf which she requested. I think she boils it and give the daughter the drink.

She told me that the leaf has finished and need another.

I don't really know how we can talk but I can give you her contact if she permits

Give him more time, the is just 4year but don't relent on what u have being doing, sacrifice more of ur time for him for teaching and don't allow him to be too comfortable by watch TV programs, teach him how to do things by himself even the house keeping stuff, u would notice change by God grace.

I'm so sorry, I hope he gets better, but looking at the brighter side, autism is common in creative people!! Research has shown that people with autism have sensitive bodies. This means their eyes, ears, nose, etc operate at an elevated physiological level. They can create more brilliant colours, sounds, forms…….. What others see as a disability, he may use as a strength.

Oh and Micheal Angelo and a lot of other artist ( Satoshi Tajiri the creator of Pokemon, Leonardo da Vinci, Wolfgang Mozart and Ludwig Beethoven) were rumored to have had autism. Just keep encouraging him and allow him do the things 'normal' (or other) children do.

If indeed you are a believer, then I am ashamed of you. The fact that your science has no cure to a disease, does not mean Jesus has no cure. I repeat, God created that child, him alone can cure him. God is the manufacturer and he has spare parts for everything he created. Deal with it!#BelieveThat

I won't reply anyone that is still talking about religion on this issue because I don't believe they have worthwhile information that can help people whose children are suffering from this disorder.

I don't believe they understand the stress one has to go thru with ones child, the sleepless nights, the long sessions of diagnostics and then therapy, the long discussion with healthcare professionals, child psychologists, speech therapists, speech pathologists. They just have no idea because they are not directly involved and don't have to live thru it. Hence my stance of not replying silly comments on religion anymore.

For those other people that are directly involved and are either still looking for solutions, have found solutions and undergoing therapy. Pls you are welcome to give ur input. Let us learn from eachother as we share knowledge.

ASD so far has no cure. Science is still trying to understand how it is caused and there is so far no known cure. Many children afflicted tend to grow out it and may be able to live a normal life later in live.

I believe the aim of we parents is to be observant and not live in denial. Ofcos like I said earlier, the diagnosis is arrived at too fast in the western world.
Sad thing there is that as the child suffers so do the parents. Finding the correct balance between being able the help the child with socialising, school work and speaking is easy but it has to be done.
If u know u know wink
