The technique used is called radiocarbon dating. I don't know how to simply explain that but you may explore more on Google. Nature is transient, in 100 million years from now, most of these animals today would have evolved or goons extinct and their only reference should be from fossil record and pictures.

It's called radiocarbon dating and it is used to determine the age of fossils to a great accuracy. There's nothing that says that there hasn't been other worlds before ours. Archeological findings have proven that.
