Rice is very affordable in Kano a friend bought bags of rice just yesterday each for N9300. How can rice become unaffordable just overnight?

This is kind of news that hit the front page within a blink of an eye.

The prize is high but still very affordable to people of Kano state!
the rice your friend bought for that amount may be half bag stones mixed with half bag rice

I'm in Kano and I can honestly tell you that Daily Trust is right.

My mum used to tell me that a measure of rice goes for 1,500, but just yesterday, I followed someone who bought a bag of rice for 1, 680. She could have purchased it in the market for 1,550, though.

It is not affordable.

Same thing I've been wondering, upon all the local rice mills springing up in many parts of the country yet price of rice keep increasing everyday. Last week I went to buy rice they said stone free local rice 25,000 while CAP foreign is 30,500 since the price difference is not much I bought the foreign one but it's painful.
One thing I've noticed in this country is even when the government introduce something good yet it will end with bad result.
because the environment isn't conducive. We all know that the government policies in Nigeria is not stable which makes investors to want to make their returns on time before another government policy will send them out of business while their creditors will be asking for their money. If border should open now the local rice mills are in financial mess which their creditor will not care to ask for their loan repayment. Just like my client goods (ginger) which got spoilt at the border going to Mali from Kano worth #28m with duty paid worth #3m minus transport and other miscellaneous expenses. Did anybody care how these importers and exporters cope with border closure without notice? Or does anybody care how these people are coping with their banks for the loan repayment? I beg don't blame any business person on this country for any high cost of goods instead blame the unfavourable condition of government policies in this country. Note VAT increased to 7.5% is another issue to high cost of goods

Many signs n signals that Nigeria can't work. Nothing is working, because of our corrupt way of living. Which one is middlemen again for rice production? Most we show our corrupt attitude in everything we do? Haba, Nigerians.

But the Government should have carefully planned the border closing policy. It should have been done gradually until local farmers can meet demand.

You don’t understand English,Buhari did the right thing by stopping importation of foreign rice but he should listen to the people and open the border to allow importation of foreign rice since the the greedy farmers won’t stop milking the populace

When you stop the importation of a product such as rice which is a staple food and in high demand by Nigerians and you do not have the capacity to locally produce, which should be ongoing before the ban is in place, and when the local farmers cannot go to their farms because of insecurity, what you are simply doing is slow genocide by starvation.

And it is wicked.

Baba recessionists. Same way in the early 80ies our parents had to get rations of essential commodities ie suger, salt, milk etc. Even if you had the money you could not get to buy. Folks warned about this baba but people no gree.
Give US, Canada, Japan economy to oga and in less than 2 years they will be in recession. The forces of nature is not smiling on him. Any thing him touch na recession. Earthquake, sunami, low crude oil price, corona go happen that will crush the economy.

meeting demand by local farmers isn't the problem but do business environment trust Nigerian government policy? Take for example, effect of VAT 7.5%, double tax by government, bad roads to carrying goods, Unstable power supply, interest rate, access to loans. These are the things that can make cost of goods to be cheap not just closing border and expect miracles

This is why they are slaughtering your farmers and chasing them off the lands, they want Nigeria’s importing of food to become necessity and not choice.

Nigeria has always had the capacity to feed self; the continued killing of your farmers will undermine this.
which farmer? Do you imagine the effect of increase in VAT on goods? Bad roads from north to South, unstable government policies? I beg

Oga you guys should stop defending what's indefensible even here in Gboko the bag of Rice is #20000 note that Gboko is in Benue state. Because you can afford it doesn't mean every else body can, let's tell the government the gospel truth, a painter of rice now is #2000 from #1000 and that of beans is#1000 from #600 so how will the average families survived, put your self in their shoe and quit this useless propaganda of yours.
