The modus operandi in the past was trade with the portuguese, dutch, and french. And you must have the tools to compete in such long distant trade. I had to go check even more sources. From Hermann Koler's account (1840) I could gather that apparently, the original Bonny people are a very small bunch and are Ibani by tribe. Slave trade swelled the numbers in Bonny greatly, maybe up to 10 times the number. These added numbers were mainly Igbo people hence the Igbo tongue pushed itself to the fore as the dominant. (Explains it's continued dominance today). However, Ibani survives still, amongst it's native speakers.


If this is the case, then the issue is far from an easy one. The Igbo folk there have same rights now to the land after over 200 years of calling it home. Plus they are the majority by a staggering distance. Ibani can't fully and confidently call it theirs anymore being the much smaller number. It's better the two groups live in peace.


So Igbo brethren we have brothers on the island of Bonny.

The bolded did not exist it their forms. It was Ubani which was actually the outpost of Ngwa\Ndoki people. The Europeans called it Ebane which later became Bonny. The so-called Ijo called it Ibani in attempt to upset history.

The bolded is Igbo from Ngwa\Asa\Ndoki enclave. How many so-called Ijo have surname as Ubani or Nwaubani or Nwubani. I repeat Bonny, which is anglicized Ubani, was the Ngwa outpost before the arrival of the Europeans. Every so-called Ijo in Bonny is a migrant. They were Ugbo-migrants.

If the Igbo, as described by Europeans wanted the oceans I think they would have gotten the whole southernmost coast to themselves if they so wish. The other tribes were too tiny to be of any worthwhile resistance. This made me think, what if our forebears deliberately shunned the coast? Like, they actually saw the expanse of water, and were familiar with it, and in some wisdom shunned it and drifted further inland.

Thinking about it now it seems pretty much like a typically Igbo thing to do, even now (and trust me we haven't changed much in mentality from our ancestors). See the water, recognize the danger and drift further inland to live.

Infant mortality to Malaria was very high there.
It's not a coincidence that the population down those places were very sparse.
That environment was a very harsh one to survive in. Our ancestors choose the comfort of inland, which was why we became densely populated.

In the full book there was not a mention of IBANI. The Ijaw strangers in Bonny were described as Ijaws from Brass. It is obvious it was many years after this book that they started adopting the name IBANI, as a corrupted form of UBANI, the name of the town
