Bonny Island is complicated to visitors. The people of Bonny are not the only inhabitants of Bonny Island, a lot of people don't know this. Bonny Kingdom or Grand Bonny has been Igbo speaking from day one. However, Bonny Island also have other group. The Ibani that Koler heard and claimed was from Grand Bonny has never been Bonny main language. It's similar to Lagos Island, where you have the Oba of Lagos rulling Eko and Iru people of Oniru, etc. However, we have the people of Finima with Kongo ancestry. I believe this was the Ibani that Kohler confused himself with and that tongue is still spoken in Finima as of today. This is the language Izon wack historian are using to lure Bonny to drop the Ndoki-Igbo ancestral language.

The Kingdom of Bonny is Ndokki and Igbo speaking from day one. But the population was swelled with people from areas like Brass, Ngwa, Andoni, Kalabari and slaves brought from the Igbo and Izon hinterlands as well.

The modus operandi in the past was trade with the portuguese, dutch, and french. And you must have the tools to compete in such long distant trade. Bonny cultural structural became Wari styled similar to what is practiced in other eastern Ijo such as Kalabari, Brass etc, to fit the period of that time, but the language remained Igbo. Each household or the wealth of a man in time past, was modelled to fit the age of trade, canoe fleets, population and and able bodied men. This was why there was a level of aculturization by each canoe house to blend slaves inorder to swell their family strenght.
Ahhhhhh, interesting. There's like a greater Bonny then like a specific area called Bonny. I didn't know this at all.

Bonny are not Igbos and aren’t Ijaws too. They prefer to be called Ibani/Ubani etc. As a matter of fact, if possible the next move would be to form one ethnic group with Opobo and Ndoki. The Ijaw nonsense of the landgrabbers from Bayelsa ended the moment Abacha pushed the clowns out. While, for the Igbos, they messed up during the civil war. We messed up. I’m Igbo from Umuagbayi Ndoki. And If I have my way, I would push for a new ethnic group for Ndoki, Opobo, Bonny.

I had to go check even more sources. From Hermann Koler's account (1840) I could gather that apparently, the original Bonny people are a very small bunch and are Ibani by tribe. Slave trade swelled the numbers in Bonny greatly, maybe up to 10 times the number. These added numbers were mainly Igbo people hence the Igbo tongue pushed itself to the fore as the dominant. (Explains it's continued dominance today). However, Ibani survives still, amongst it's native speakers.

If this is the case, then the issue is far from an easy one. The Igbo folk there have same rights now to the land after over 200 years of calling it home. Plus they are the majority by a staggering distance. Ibani can't fully and confidently call it theirs anymore being the much smaller number. It's better the two groups live in peace.

So Igbo brethren we have brothers on the island of Bonny.
. All thanks to slavery, but Israelites can never be Egyptians, ask Joseph

After all these, how much will enter your pocket Mr Man? Carry the whole Bonny Island it belongs to Ipob, just like Lagos, & Kuala Lumpur belong to you also.

So you're saying Ndoki and Ibani have same rights to Bonny? Or Ibani don't have any claim whatsoever?
The bolded did not exist it their forms. It was Ubani which was actually the outpost of Ngwa\Ndoki people. The Europeans called it Ebane which later became Bonny. The so-called Ijo called it Ibani in attempt to upset history.

Hmmm.

From what I read there appeared to be some non-Igbo present at the time and who claimed to be indigenous to the area. Their words as recorded by some Europeans then, are "Ijaw" words.

You don crase finish, shey you know that? You were not Igbo until late 1970s. Every article of news, history and record knew you as Ibo and spelt in one of Eboe, Igbo, Ebo, Ibo, Eebo. That 1854 article from William Balfour says "Igbo". Omoibo don enter that article and falsify records. Abi no be so? grin

Bonny came feom Ebene or Abene. This is how people of Calabar called Benin. So those indigenes of and sorrounding, like Ikwerre are correct by saying they originated from Benin.

how can a man who was sold by his former kinsmen into slavery now being reclaimed as an Igbo man, what so ever a man give away in his lifetime, seizes to be his property.

The Ijaw are also known to practice ritual acculturation
(enculturation), whereby an individual from a different,
unrelated group undergoes rites to become Ijaw. An
example of this is Jaja of Opobo, the Igbo slave who rose
to become a powerful Ibani (Bonny) king in the 19th
century.
the igbos lost him.
The Ijaws did not buy his freedom. He was bought as a slave, but he freed himself back into the Igbo fold

opobo remain an estate of King jaja not ijaw. if you don't know the history go and research about it. jaja found opobo after he left bonny . jajas has never denied his origins even today. ijaw can never claim what doesn't belong them. supreme Court of Nigeria affirms that too.
That's what a lot of people don't know. The supreme court has already made it clear the party that Opobo belongs to.

Ibani Revisionism won't change anything

The bolded is Igbo from Ngwa\Asa\Ndoki enclave. How many so-called Ijo have surname as Ubani or Nwaubani or Nwubani. I repeat Bonny, which is anglicized Ubani, was the Ngwa outpost before the arrival of the Europeans. Every so-called Ijo in Bonny is a migrant. They were Ugbo-migrants.

Re: Igbo Or Ijaw, Who Owns Opobo? by SlayerForever(op): 5:29pm On Aug 30, 2020
After reading Hermann Koler's account I get the understanding the Igbo have always been very influential and robust right from time. If the Igbo, as described by Europeans wanted the oceans I think they would have gotten the whole southernmost coast to themselves if they so wish. The other tribes were too tiny to be of any worthwhile resistance. This made me think, what if our forebears deliberately shunned the coast? Like, they actually saw the expanse of water, and were familiar with it, and in some wisdom shunned it and drifted further inland.

Thinking about it now it seems pretty much like a typically Igbo thing to do, even now (and trust me we haven't changed much in mentality from our ancestors). See the water, recognize the danger and drift further inland to live.

How plausible?

The Niger delta was a mosquito infested region.
Infant mortality to Malaria was very high there.
It's not a coincidence that the population down those places were very sparse.
That environment was a very harsh one to survive in. Our ancestors choose the comfort of inland, which was why we became densely populated.

Present day Ibani people (Bonny and Opobo) are decendands of both original Ijaws and Igbo slaves/free people.

Speaking Igbo doesn't make them Ibos. They identify as Ijaws. The people of Bonny and Opobo consider it insulting to regard them as Ibos the same way a man from Niger State feels when called an Hausa man because he speaks Hausa.

This is not an argument please. I detest tribalism.
Stop spreading falsehood. Read the attachment in my signature to learn who the original Ubani people are. Thank God neutral observers recorded it.

In the full book there was not a mention of IBANI. The Ijaw strangers in Bonny were described as Ijaws from Brass. It is obvious it was many years after this book that they started adopting the name IBANI, as a corrupted form of UBANI, the name of the town
