We visited many corporate offices and places together, apart from holding several meetings. I had spent many days at work before I discovered there was an office adjoining madam's own which served as the board-room.

In no time, Madam B earned my respect as a smart and an astute business woman.

Chapter Four

A couple of weeks after I had taken up the new job, Edith came around to the house in the evening. I was in the sitting room with my cousins watching the television when she came around. As usual, I refused to take her to my bedroom.

‘I will like to see you privately,’ she told me. If she expected that I would take her to my bedroom, she was making a grave mistake. Rather, I took her outside the sitting-room and outside the house. It was by the gate of the house that I stopped.

‘Yes, we can talk now,’ I said.

‘Here?’ She looked ruffled. ‘Can’t we go to your room?’

‘I’m sorry, no. Let’s do the talking here.’

She didn’t like it but she had no other option. ‘To start with, I want to ask: is it true you have started working with Madam Da Rocha?’

I was not surprised she had already known. I knew sooner or later, she would know. ‘Yes.’

‘And that you’re her Personal Assistant?’

I nodded. ‘Yes.’

She looked at me sharply. ‘But, how could you do that? How could you take up that job?’

I was surprised. What exactly was Edith driving at? Why was she averse to my new work? ‘I don’t understand you,’ I said.

‘I don’t trust that woman,’ she blurted out. ‘And I think you shouldn’t have accepted it. She’s only trying to seduce you.’

I opened my mouth in bewilderment. ‘But, how could you say such a thing?’ I demanded.

‘I know what I’m saying,’ she replied. ‘You, know, she has lost her husband and such a woman will only lure a young, handsome man like you to bed.’

I sighed in exasperation. ‘Look, Edith, don’t worry a thing. I’ll be able to take care of myself. She won’t succeed in seducing me, I assure you.’

‘You shouldn’t have taken the offer,’ she insisted. ‘And if I were you, I will stop working for her immediately.’

But, wait a minute. What was Edith’s problem? Even if it was Madam B’s intention to seduce me, what was Edith’s business with that? Why was she so concerned?

‘You have nothing to worry about,’ I said. ‘I’ll be okay.’

‘Are you sure? Are you sure you will not allow yourself to be seduced?’

I grinned to myself. I could have told her it was none of her business even if the madam seduced me but I decided not to assert myself that way.

‘As I said, you don’t have anything to worry about Edith. Thanks for your concern.’

She sighed. ‘Okay o. if you say so. Now, secondly, let me say I don’t like the way you’ve been treating me.’

‘How have I been treating you?’

She held me right hand. ‘Why have you been treating me as if I’m a piece of rag?’

‘How have I been treating you?’

She held me right hand. ‘Why have you been treating me as if I’m a piece of rag?’

I chuckled. ‘You know, Edith, that what you said is not true.’

She held me tighter. ‘Bringing me here is a good example. How could you bring me outside the house when you could have taken me to your room?’

‘Look, Edith, I have respect for you and I cannot treat you as a piece of rag. However, I cannot allow a repeat of what happened to us the other time. It was a mistake that must never repeat itself.’

Edith’s next action surprised me. She hissed and walked away from me.

After I had spent three weeks on the job, madam said she would be travelling to Abuja on business and I was to accompany her. She said it could be for two or three days. I told Enny about it and she revisited her reservations.

'So, you and madam alone in Abuja, eh?'

'Come on, my dear. There is no one but you.' I had to say some other sweet and assuring words before I could rest-assure her.

We went by the late afternoon flight to Abuja, and we travelled by first class cabin. While on the flight, we sat side by side. Madam brought a small Bible and read. I could see that she read from the book of Psalms. It was obvious she had some phobia.

Madam said she preferred to rest for hours after the flight before seeing people officially the following morning. From the Nnamdi Azikiwe airport, we chartered a cab to a five-star hotel. Under instruction from madam, I had earlier called the hotel to book for a suite.

We checked into the hotel suite, the porter helping with madam's valise. It was a very comfortable suite. I must confess this was the first time I would be lodging in a five-star hotel in my life.

After the porter had left and after madam had settled down, I took my small bag.

'I want to go downstairs, ma'am, to book a room.'

'For who?'

'For myself, ma'am.'

She smiled. 'This suite has a lounging-room, a large bedroom, another small bedroom and two bathrooms, en-suite. You can take the other bedroom and there's no need for renting a room again.'

I was thinking very fast. That meant I would be sleeping not far away from madam.

'Relax, Alex,' she went on. 'Go and drop your bag in the other room. This place will conveniently contain us.'

'Yes, ma'am.'

'There's another thing, Alex. You've not been properly addressing me.'

I looked surprised.

'Yes. The ''madam'' stuff is okay in the official setting, not in a private place like this.'

I nodded. 'Yes, ma'am.'

'So, drop the ma'am. Call me mummy.'

I could not help the smile that came on my face.

'Yes, ma’am, I mean, mummy.'

She smiled. 'That's my boy.'

Her saying that made me feel so small, but then, I had no choice than to accept her nomenclature. There was a rap at the door. I went to see who it was. The room service had brought the dishes madam ordered for.

I opened the door wide for the food trolley to be wheeled inside. The hotel staffer soon left us. Madam went on to change into a bumper shot and t-shirt. She even looked much younger now. Her bare torso and legs were smooth and free from slabs of fat.

One very commendable thing about her was that she had managed to look trim, despite all the affluence around her. She must really be keeping a disciplined diet.

I set the food tray on the table by the sofa. She had ordered for pounded yam and egusi soup grilled with snail and fried turkey.

She washed her hands in the washing bowl provided.

'O ya, come and sit down. Let's eat.'

She washed her hands in the washing bowl provided.

'O ya, come and sit down. Let's eat.'

'Thank you mummy. I'm not hungry for now.'

She looked at me curiously. 'You don't expect that I alone will eat all these, do you?'

'I will eat later. It's just that with the snacks I took aboard, I'm not hungry for now.'

She nodded. 'Okay.'

When the air hostess was serving the passengers, madam had declined to be served. I had gladly taken the sausage beef.

While she ate, I sat on another sofa.

I made my attention be focused on the flat screen in the room The cabled news channel was beaming a breaking international news.

Madam used the table knife to cut off part of the pounded yam and put it in a separate plate.

She also used spoon to scoop some soup in another plate. She told me that was my portion. In between, her phones were ringing and I was the one receiving the calls on her behalf. Madam was not only wealthy but connected. Her callers included the movers and shakers of the society.

After she had finished eating, we planned for our movement for the following day. First, she had an appointment to see the Minister of State for Petroleum.

After that, she would be seeing the Director General in the same Ministry. The day after that day, she would be meeting some business partners and managers. So, she had a busy schedule.

We chatted on other matters thereafter. She did most of the talking, revealing some of her private matters. I was the good listener that was making the appropriate interjections and responses.

About seven p.m, she asked if I could help her to massage her feet. I answered in the affirmative. She went to her bag and brought a lotion.

'I usually use this lotion to massage the legs.'
'No, problem, mummy.' I collected the lotion from her. She placed her legs on the sofa while I sat next to her feet. I had helped Enny to massage her thighs and back in the past, so, I was not strange to doing this kind of thing.

I rubbed the lotion on my palms and ran my hands over her legs. She closed her eyes and I imagined what was going on in her mind.

I did the massaging to the best of my ability, from her knees to her ankles and the feet.

'That was good,' she commented. 'You did it like a professional.'

'Well, I just tried in my little way.'

'You did very well.' She smiled and nodded as she sat up on the sofa . 'I want to ask you a personal question.'

I smiled too. 'You can ask any question, mummy.'

'Have you had a sugar mummy before?'

The smile on my face became a grimace. What a question! Had her daughter not asked something quite similar to that before? Then, I had parried it. This time around, I must answer it.

I shook my head. 'No, I've never had the experience.'

She smiled again. 'Do you really see me as your sugar mummy?'

The question came like a whiplash. Why was she asking all these? What did she herself take me for? Ever since she mentioned intimacy, had we really been intimate?

Did she herself not set the bar on how far things could go? Was she just teasing me or was she playing on my emotion?

'I don't see you as sugar mummy, or anything close to that,' I blurted out. 'Rather I see you as my benefactor.'

She nodded as if that was the answer she expected.

‘If you have the opportunity of having a sugar mum, will you shy away from it?'

I was surprised again. Honestly, I didn’t know what to say.

She chucked. 'Can you honestly answer that question?'

I opened my mouth but the words got stuck.

She chucked. 'Can you honestly answer that question?'

I opened my mouth but the words got stuck.

She tapped the sofa she was sitting on. 'Come over here.'

I went to sit by her side. I was so close to her that our shoulders were almost rubbing.

'I don’t really need explanation to do,’ she continued. ‘All I can say is that human beings will always need physiological and emotional needs.

Ever since you started as Sophia’s lesson teacher, I’ve been having that feeling. I tried to suppress it, but the more I tried, the more difficult it becomes. Now, I believe I’ve got to that point where there’s no need for any pretense again.'

I found what she was saying incredible. I wished she was just pulling my legs, but something told me she was dead serious. My heart continued to beat fast.

'I’m not forcing anything on you,' she continued. ‘It all depends on what you want, but let me state clearly that the whole idea of employing as my P.A is to make you be close to me and for me to achieve that emotional need. It doesn’t stop your relationship with your lady, of course. Go ahead with her. You will only have to please me on demand.’

Wild thoughts were going on in my mind. Enny and Edith were right after all. Enny was skeptical about my working for the madam, while Edith categorically stated that the madam’s intention was to seduce me. How right they were!

Her voice interrupted my thoughts. 'Alex, I must commend your effort, so far. You have been upright, hardworking and decent. Keep it up.'

I finally found my voice. 'Thank you, madam, I mean, mummy.'

She smiled and held my hand. 'I however want more from you. Yes, I want more than just a hard-working and diligent personal assistant. Will you be able to fulfill all my needs?'

What could I say now? I felt I was probably in a dreamland.

'Are you surprised to hear all these from me?' she asked, as if she was reading my mind.

I nodded vigorously. 'Yes, I am.'

'Don't be. Life is always full of surprises. What we should yearn for are pleasant surprises. I’m waiting for you to answer my question.'

I breathed in deeply. My mind went to Enny. How would she feel if she eventually got to know that I was having sensuous affairs with Madam B?

Was I not in a tight corner as things were? Saying No would mean automatically losing my job. At the same time, it was difficult to say no.

Thankfully, her phone rang again, and this time I handed it over to her. She was on the phone for several minutes.

'That was Steph, my first daughter,' she said after disconnecting the line. 'She said she would be coming home soon for a four-week vacation.'

I could only nod.

‘There’s no time to waste,’ she went on. ‘Your answer is either yes or no. so?’

She stared at me expectantly. I could hardly look into her eyes. I remained stiff where I sat. she could see me complete uneasiness and she smiled to ease the situation.

‘Alright, this is how we would do it. If your answer is no, go downstairs right away. You will have to book a room for yourself. If your answer is yes, then, remain where you are.’

I sighed. I would tow the tough part, I decided. I would be a hero; I would be a man. I decided to remain where I was.

A minute passed.
