Hi@jbreezy,

I can't refuse the urge to respond to your post and am sorry if some aspects of my response sound harsh. I have my reasons for apologizing in advance and also hope I am not breaching any rules of this platform.

Unless you are the son of Dangote or you bought your 1st Class Degree from a Nigerian university in Electrical Engineering, please don't sell yourself short.

You don't know how much pressure a scholarship takes off your shoulder and what other productive things you can do with your own resources until you study on scholarship. Not to even talk about the prestige and fringe opportunities that comes with being a "scholar". If not for the situation we find ourselves in this country, how will a first class product even ever think of paying for advance studies again? My brother/sister, you have already paid your dues by that achievement IF YOUR POST IS TRUE and you earned every point that leading to the award of that degree.

What you need is a good preparation during the gap year. This will typically include any or some of these; NYSC, good GMAT/GRE/IELTS scores, research experience or publications (even just a proof of article acceptance or conference presentation) of your bachelors research, and a solid research proposal/statement of research intent. Then you get a good application packaged for admission into a couple of top ranking schools (MCGills, Toronto, UBC), a few more into mid-ranking institutions and another couple into safety schools (those you are 99.99% sure of getting admitted). You can't miss it. Get your scholarship(s) and ride on. Payment for multiple transcripts, couriers and application fees should not be a problem judging by your post.

With a 1st class engineering degree and perfect admission application, you may even be able to get direct PhD offer plus funding or one with joint Msc/Phd route. You wont know your real worth until you give it a try. What can you lose by trying? NOTHING.

Cheers!

I am a fresh Nigerian graduate with the determination to go further my studies abroad, specifically Canada because of her good immigration tolerance. Had first class in electrical engineering but I don't want to put all my hopes on scholarships, so otherwise, I want to have a good financial plan for the tuition. From my research, Memorial University and Sask are two of the cheapest there.I've calculated their tuition too but I just want more light from experienced people. Will 5m be enough for schooling and living for a year? And if not, how much should I plan on?

She explained how the proposed program would serve the family business but her explanation of how the family will survive in her absence is not elaborate. I will tell her to improve this part of the SOP/LEO when she's reapplying. Thanks, @Osemigho for this insightful contribution.

Hello bosses in the house.

What's the difference between Graduate Diploma and Graduate Certificate?
Also, which one is advisable for an HND holder to pursue.

There is no difference between a PGC and PGD. Most importantly as an HND holder you're quite eligible to apply for admission in any that has your choice of program .

You should be looking for supervisors for Msc engineering in every Canadian universities. 5m is too small. For a one year program, 6-9m is a good start if you don’t want to hustle and struggle.

Thanks for your contribution sir @Frankrobbn1 and God bless all the gurus in the house. This option sounds good too but it appears she will be reapplying after her profile is updated with the refusal. I think she's considering this option in view of the litigation cost. I believe the next application will end in praise if she can incorporate all these suggestions.

Frankrobbn1:

The first stage which is well known as the leave stage is when the lawyer from IRCC decides to settle and accept the settlement offer from the PA's immigration lawyer in Canada instead of going through the whole Federal Court process (Judicial Review). Settlement involves reaching out to the lawyer on the other side and presenting a strong case as early as possible. As part of the judicial review application the PA's immigration lawyer will submit several pages settlement proposal to the IRCC lawyer on the other side in order to secure settlement as early as possible.

If IRCC lawyer on the other side agrees with the same position, they will offer to settle the case rather than spending the time, money and energy necessary to argue the case in Federal Court.

Majority of cases like @daadlade1 settle out of court while another immigration officer will then be handed over the application to review and make a final decision. Above all, this most often ends as an approval.

@daadlade1, you may consider making use of this route if you can afford the professional fees of an experienced attorney. Alternatively, rewrite your LOE by addressing the visa officer's concerns. Please be advised that you can't withdraw the study permit application as a decison has already been reached on the file.

I read she mention her mum will take care of the kids. Who is her mum? What does she do? Did her mum agree to the arrangement? Things are evolving with IRCC. Stating “my mum will take care of them” used to be enough. Perhaps they need more evidence that she will and she can e.g. Letter of support and other documents to prove her financial and moral capacity. Perhaps she also want to mention her plan to visit them during her program e.g summer period.

Since she will be reapplying herself in the next attempt, I would suggest that she takes her time to carefully analyse the reasons given by the visa officer and should demonstrate that her situation her substantively changed with significant new information on file.

Best of luck on her application. Please keep the house posted should you have any questions.

Hi jbreezy,

Honorable Akannitommy has said it all..

My suggestion,

Don't limit yourself to those two schools you mentioned, you need to widen your Admission Horizon in terms of checking out more schools when considering to do a MASTERS in Canada. This will help you lessen the competition and not make you put all energy in One Skool cos of their Affordable Tuition.
What if the other schools u feel is expensive & unknowingly to you have available scholarship (partial or full)?

Its gonna be a good move if you craft your masters application well to get a scholarship.

I know its about the expensive tuition of some skools but with you having a first class honors you got a good shot which might lead to a goal for you in terms of getting a Partially or Fully-Funded thesis Based MASTERS.

I guess you have seen in this forum whereby an Applicant mailed over 60 supervisors of different schools for a Thesis Based-Masters (not even a full-funded thesis based masters)and only got a Favorable response from 3 supervisors out of the 60 he mailed.

With your First Class honors and some other requirements (depending on the skool & program) you stand a chance of getting a Supervisor for your masters & also get Fully-Funded Scholarship for that program.

Fall 2021 is jz a year from now, so you got enough time to get a Supervisor and if you get a Favorable decision from one of them, ask if there is Partial or Full-funded scholarship for the program, if there is, thats a GOAL!!! for you

Note: Don't feel discouraged if u get negative response from some potential supervisors, just keep moving unto the next one.

Good evening all. My application got refused based on inability to demonstrate sufficient fund for my tuition and living expenses. My sponsor has a balance of 20m in the account I submitted. I don't actually know how to go about this. Please I need your support towards my next application

I regret to hear your TRV was delayed on the basis of financial insufficiency. It is probably that your sponsor is not closely related to you (third party) and as such the visa officer is not convinced that you will have continued access to funds during the course of your studies in Canada without working to pay for your fees. It is important to note that improper documentations to establish proof of relationship with sponsor could also result to a Visa refusal on insufficient funds for a study permit application. Having said that, I would urge you to get your GCMS notes as soon as possible, so we can collaboratively evaluate the reasons behind the refusals and think outside of the box in order to bring up reasons that will facilitate the approval of your next application.

Re: Canadian Student Visa Thread Part 17 by Akannitommy: 7:23pm On Sep 04, 2020
Thanks @ConradAce, Permit me to provide some more concrete life contexts to your response.

I am an average student (2.1), not a 1st class graduate. I was selling myself short after NYSC until a lecturer mentored me that I need to make efforts even though I may not get the goal but I will gain vital experiences along the way that would become useful ultimately. He was right then and remains right today.

I applied to Imperial College, London (more than a decade ago) with a solid SOP and hand-typed "transcripts" extracted from my personal records of academic results. I converted to pdf and indicated at the top that it is a personal student record of my results. This was because getting transcripts costs were not affordable for me back then as a fresh jobless graduate. I got an interview and at the end the panel told me they will offer me an MSc admission and waive TOEFL/IELTS requirements for me. I only needed to show proof of WAEC credit pass in English and they will accept scratch card PIN to verify that.

The offer was not funded of course. I guess because it was course-based, I didn't have a 1st class as funding is more competitive than admission, and British universities are not very famous for cheerful giving like their North American cousins. Regardless, it was a very good experience and life changing too even though I didn't attend Imperial eventually, the gains from that experience lives with me till today.

You never know until you try. With the attitude we are trying to dissuade, a 2.2 candidate with better confidence, information and deliberate mentor-ship will get into a funded program (and more prestigious one at that) than a 1st class graduate who sells him/herself short. There is need for mentoring of potential next gens so they can optimize their potentials.

Ciao!

I have Mail requests recently that queries on if Institutions also determine your Approval or Rejection...

I will only write based on my own information and assessments , anything i right is basically my opinion , because there are some warriors here!

YES! the institution you choose is greatly an asset,

There are institutions that are rarely or have never been mentioned here, Nigerians do like Sugar-Ants, Mr A applied to this school and got visa, Mr B applied to this school and got rejection, then that means that the school that has more rejections is worse than the other school.
If there are too many applications(Nigerians) for visa coming from a particular school, trust me rejections will increase on that school, Take for instance "Colleges", it is almost impossible to get a visa for study there , even if you pay 6 Years tuition fees.

Area/Location--- Nigerians also choose schools depending on location, Cheap place, place wey no too cold, place wey dem no dey speak french but English etc, From observation it hampers your approvals because it may rather become a territory.

School fees--- We choose schools depending on the fees, as cheap as it gets , it gets more applications, like i said earlier there are schools that have never been mentioned here, like school of 50,000CAD.....30k to 40k CAD,...... but the truth is that this schools will get you an approval easily , from strong convictions if you have evidence that you can pay this fees and sustain your self there .

This things is all about money and Your capacity, they are also worried about your plans but more interested in what you will be offering in Canada too, either way. this is a WIN-WIN situation for anyone heading to Canada but how about the people that are to decide if this happens , The VOs?

It's highly advisable that you should pay for the tuition deposit required to secure your seat in the program. Failure to do so may warrant the admission office to revoke your admission and give your space to another candidate. Please contact the financial services of your intended school so you could make possible plans of completing the payment before submitting your application for a study permit/visa.
