AIR COMPONENT OF OPERATION THUNDER STRIKE DISRUPTS ARMED BANDITS’ HIDEOUTS AT KUDURU AND KWAIMBANA FORESTS IN KADUNA STATE

1. The Air Component of Operation THUNDER STRIKE has neutralized several armed bandits and disrupted their camps in the Kuduru and Kwaimbana Forest areas of Kaduna State. This was achieved through separate air strikes carried out on 2 and 3 September 2020 on the heels of credible intelligence reports indicating that the 2 locations were being used as staging areas by the bandits.

2. The attack on the Kuduru Forest hideout was executed after aerial reconnaissance missions observed significant number of armed bandits around some compounds in a small settlement within the forest. Accordingly, the Air Component dispatched Nigerian Air Force (NAF) jets and helicopter gunships to attack the location. The attack aircraft took turns in strafing the target area leading to the neutralization of several of the bandits as well as damage to their dwellings.

3. At the Kwaimbana Forest, where some bandits were seen along with many rustled cattle around some huts and makeshift structures, the NAF jets and helicopter gunships engaged the area in successive passes, taking out some of the bandits.

GeneralFarouq:

What if the soldiers were to space their convoy, let say 20 metres(it has it own risk to troops)
.. So in a convoy of 5 u have about 100 metres stretch, so in an ambush the entire patrol may not come under fire and therefore able to respond better

Spacing is a norm during convoys and should be adhered to strictly.

But thing is terrorists will also adapt , they will spread out accordingly and then ambush each of the targets.

The SOP is to conduct route opening ( route sanitization ) prior to the movement of a convey along the route. This is where drones come into play - prevention or denying the capability to ambush .

Also one simple thing I will suggest plz make it a rule to burn down all bush / vegetation , remove trees / decrepit buildings etc along patrol routes / roads in terrorist prone areas. This will cut down by half the ability of bh to mount ambushes .

This will be helpful for the civilians plying the road more or less .

Hello Everyone.
I have an event coming up and I want to have two or three soldiers there for protection for guests who'll sleep overnight.
The issue is I don't know the protocol for that.
Do I have to make it official by going to a barrack or a force headquarters or something or can I simply get a soldier that'll come with his friends and do it off the book.
Those that have experience with this kinda thing should offer some advice please.

Forgive the off topic post please I felt since we have a lot of military personnel here they can put me through

Na wa oh!!! So you wan turn soldier to maiguard for your private event? You no see Police go hire?

In a terrorist infested zone or in a conflict zone , the SOP is not to use roads or use the same routes regularly ( including off road routes )

Let me add why sometimes patrols/convoys prefer to use " paved/metalled roads " , reason being if any IEDs r planted on paved/metalled roads , it is relatively easy to spot the signs of the same from a distance ( from the vehicle itself ). But thing is this don't always work yet many r willing to take the chance .

Nemesis's point is to enable troops see clearly and deprive the enemy hiding spots, which is why it's common sense to do such clearing.
But, in an area of operation so vast with many access roads that troops ply, that will be a lot of work to clear bushes and vegetation .
Best bet, use drones, faster and possibly easier .
I said it last yr or so, when Military bases were having BH creep right on them without seeing them coming, in such instance, every single structure and vegetation around those bases should be history, so who ever is using those watch towers, can actually have clear view of their surroundings.
This way you see BH before they get close

There are chemical sprays that can bee used to kill plants growing close to the road. USA used the spray during the Vietnam war.

#HappeningNow: Pursuant to its constitutional role of providing Military Aid to Civil Authority, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has commenced the airlift of over 120,000 Kgs of humanitarian relief items approved by the Federal Government for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Borno State using its C-130H aircraft & utility helicopters. The operation, which is being coordinated in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development as well as the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), is aimed at ensuring that there are no gaps in the availability of food and other essential items at the various IDP Camps in Borno State. Details later.

Ok now I get it grin

Well I nowadays keep to the point so don't elaborate too much or assume my pov to be clear enough not to warrant additional explanation.

When I said clear all vegetation / obstruction etc along the roads it was obvious that I meant it in the context of patrolling .

Patrolling is of many types

Combat patrol

Security patrol

Recon patrol

Route opening patrol

Route sanitation patrol

Area domination patrol

Convoy escort

Etc
Etc

( Different militaries will have different definitions and can be further sub divided )

Let's take the eg of security patrol , generally they r tasked to patrol in proximity to either fixed locations like bases/towns etc ( or larger mobile groups like a column of own forces )

So first thing they generally do is identify vulnerabilities in the terrain / vegetation . All roads leading into the AoR is identified and necessary actions r taken like removing vegetation along the roads to improve visibility and remove the chances of ambush , alternate routes to bypass terrain/location with ambush possibility etc . Sanitization of area ( including roads ) can happen upto 1 km or 5 km or 10 km etc away from the staging area . It depends on the person in charge and situation on ground.

Now let's take the eg of recon patrol which is conducted in hostile area . Before it proceeds to its objectives it first passes through the safe areas through roads ( already cleared of vegetation etc - deemed sanitized ) or maybe off road again first through areas deemed safe due to effective patrols via sanitised roads etc .

But In hostile area the recon patrol will use the vegetation or terrain etc in proximity of the roads to their own advantage against the hostiles who r using the very same roads . So does it make sense to go clearing up the vegetation etc along the roads in hostile areas or is it feasible to so ( periodically remove vegetation ) in a area which is untenable or in no mans land.

Again let's take the eg of national highway - main lifeline to commerce and thoroughfare for a province , portions of it might be vulnerable to ambush due to adjoining hostile areas etc , helped by vegetation / man-made structures etc , in that case priority will be to clear the same so that travellers have a fighting chance to detect threats before hand and escape , so that escort parties don't get trapped into a ambush etc , they don't get taken by surprise etc . Is there any other alternative ? Don't think so since keeping the main road open and safe should have the highest priority both for security and economic reasons.

So when I say clear all vegetation or obstruction with can facilitate ambush on patrols , it doesn't meant u literally go clearing vegetation , pulling down obstructions on all the roads ( or all along the road ) u can find or expect to travel in a state. That's illogical to even assume so . action needs to be proportional to the threat perception and operational needs. it is understood by default by those in the business / in the know

Why not night patrols? Equip the troops for patrol with NVG, thermal camera's,and IR torches/illuminators.They will have a huge tactical advantage with night patrols. Tell me what you think.

It takes discipline to fight at all. It takes balls to fight at night.

If they're not well drilled at night fighting, there'd be only tears.

Apparently this attack was not an ambush as stipulated earlier.
The hipped up SANDBAGS, trenches and the generator make it look like a mini FOB.
I think this guys got dislodged.
