I was thinking where to post this thread, be it in family or religion section but I was able to settle it here. a friend of mine, she is about to wed, so in our discussion I brought about the issue of in law and I ask her, why is it that bad luck or witchcraft in marriage is always ascribe to the family of the man in Africa? they do say it is the mother of man that is causing havoc in the family. i believe many husbands have witnessed their wives calling the mother of the man a witch. even some churches are not helping matters, you will hear them saying, every witchcraft from my father's house die by fire. my question, is it only the man's family that there is witch, what happens to the woman's family do they not have witches

Women are 80% emotional and 20% logical while men are 80% logical and 20% emotional.

However, there are a few variations.

Because hatred comes from the man family towards the wife and her children especially when the man is rich and doing better than most in the family. Some assume the wife is enjoying the money thereby portray hatred and extend it to the innocent kids.. in truth, they may not be wicked or be witches, but due to their behaviors, one can easily tag them as witches

I don’t know witchcraft to ALWAYS be associated to a man’s family.

When a man is not doing well, the witchcraft is blamed on his WIFE. Sometimes his mother.

Most times I have seen any form of witchcraft being attributed to a man’s family, it is when the woman can’t conceive. The reason for this is simple, it would be ridiculous to assume it is her own mother/family that doesn’t want her to conceive.

The only thing that is a constant is that, it is most times a WITCH, be it the mother, wife, grandmother or auntie. Hardly ever a wizard.

Nigeria is a patrilineal society (even the bible is). If you are okay with us taking the man’s name and assuming his place as our origin, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that even prayers would refer to the “father’s house” and anything less would be feminism. That is our root- be it for good or evil. Let’s respect nature. Thank you cheesy

I believed the witchcraft here is in the context of
sorcery where the perpetrators could be male or female (wizard/witch).

Note that one's mother side of the family is also someone else's father's family, so the "witches" are also there. cheesy

Hahahahahahahaha

So it is all about perspective cheesy cheesy

Well, the typical entitlement nature of the father's/husband's family doesn't help their cause.

Besides, OP needs to update his church. Most churches I know pray against witches from father's side, mother's side and spouses side. wink

Another way to conceptualise it is to view it from the angle of the inherent, seemingly endless competition and jealousy that exists between and among women. This state of being almost always spills into marriage and imbues their relationship -- that is, for the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law -- with distrust. No amount of poorly-framed and digested labels, such as that called the "Sister Code" could deescalate this gratuitous tension.

For example, a lot of ladies are not enthusiastic if the mother of the guy they intend to marry is alive, even when they are yet to meet her. The audacious ones will expressly telll you that, they are not comfortable with the fact that their would-be mother-in-law is alive. Ditto most mothers-in-law.

This ugly, unhealthy atmosphere is not helped since marriage in Africa has a lot to do with women than men, and the feminine species of the extended family members of both sides are prone to intervene, depending on the character traits of the couple. However, due to the competition, jealousy, and tension that assail most young marriages, the female members of the man's family are usually the first suspects if and when things become amiss. No one dare blames the lady's femsle family members. They are simply irreproachable!
