You seem to be a child. The same bible on numerous occasions mentioned how Israelites will fall away from their god and resort to worshipping other gods. The modern day version will be atheists constant challenge for religionists to show a microscopic level believable proof of existence of god's. That should give you an idea of how religious practices were back then. Just like now, it all got its validity from demonstrating whose god is more powerful either through wars. Note, this doesn't mean that the said contest by Elijah actually happened in real life.
