Nairaland car talk section has educated many of us, I believe you are new and have not been using this section, avid users of the auto section won't make such expensive mistake. Gazzuzz and co are there to assist with inspection at just a token charge when compared to what you will spent on repairs of this type of lemon purchase. I really feel for you, but don't feel too bad, it happens like that sometimes. It could have been worse. 3 Likes |

Op, before you change that engine, make sure its not the turbo's actuator wastegate that is rattling. Let a good technician who is grounded in knowledge of this car check it out. Can you make an audio of the sound. Then snap your instrument cluster while car is on. 8 Likes |

Doslop: Car is in Warri. Warri is close to Benin. Reach out to Sata Motors in Benin City. Either arrange for them to see the vehicle or tow the vehicle to them to determine the real issue before going ahead. At this point without a physical inspection, everything is conjecture. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2016/11/05/hyundai-motors-nigeria-names-sata-motors-new-benin-dealer/amp/ Sorry. chukel: Boss, that particular engine (2.0turbo) was known to even fail at mileages as low as 60,000 miles. The 2.4 even faired better. Piston slap, worn crankshaft bearings, metallic particles left over from the factory deburring process on the crankshaft, weak oil pump/ balance shaft design, you name it.... I mean it is rare to see any Hyundai/kia product having this particular engine that exceeded 150,000 miles without engine replacement Hyundai/kia no try for this one at all for this engine... |

adanny01: Bros bros Not with this kind of engine o Any engine rebuilder that does not have micrometers, callipers, torque wrenches and dial bore gauge (or he has but does not know how to use them) has no business rebuilding these Hyundai engines. They are very tolerance sensitive and you must respect the specifications as stated in the service manual, if not engine will seize again after 5 km drive |

Inception: That's not what am saying. Am not talking of rebuilding at all. What am saying is, if the crankshaft noise is actually worn out connecting rod bearing or crankshaft journals, then the fix is easier which doesn't require the engine to be dropped or rebuilt. Connecting rod bearings and journal are accessible from the sump without dropping the engine. Pls note, I am talking about connecting rod bearings, not crankshaft main bearing or thrust bearings. I had it done on 1zz and its been 2yrs. In that case, the connecting rod bearings were worn and journal for cylinder 3 was a little out of spec. All the connecting rod bearings were changed to new and number 3 required additional packing. The packing was just paper. Like I said before, some cars have oil pump that block access, which complicates the process because the pump will need to give way. |
Re: One Week Old Tokumbo Car With Engine Problem Please Help by Inception(m): 9:23pm On Sep 13, 2020 |
adanny01: The peculiar failure point of this engine is its connecting rod bearings ( usually no.1 and in some cases no2 and 3). In some cases it starts with a knock. In some cases it seizes without warning. What causes the former most of the time is metal shavings present in the crankshaft (as it was not properly cleaned after machining from factory). What causes the latter most of the time is oil shortage ( in which over time will lead to extreme oil consumption that will catch the owner unawares when he runs out of oil, particularly during long distances) due to the very thin piston ring design used in the theta II engine series. Why am I saying all these grammar? It gives us an insight of how to tackle the issues when working on this engine. The tolerances used on this engine are very tight compared to the 1zz engine. Using 'packing' can completely close up oil film clearance or make it too lose , causing catastrophic drop in oil pressure. The oil pump for this engine is not great. Hence if the rebuild option is the only choice , the crankshaft must be replaced and measured, with bearings sized as per manufacturers spec. To avoid this happening again, it is also advisable you ring the engine as most suffer from excessive oil consumption once they hit 100,000 miles. Changing all conrod bearing would require a removal of the engine as there is a ladder frame present that would prevent you from reaching conrod bearings 2 and 3. The oil pump/balance shaft assy is bolted to this ladder frame. 4 Likes |

never buy a nigerian used hyundai or kia that you dont know its maintenance history, infact, a foreign used toyota is much better that any of those expensive korean toys. moreso, your guy has swindled you behind your back and received a reward from the seller by approving a bad car for you. when it comes to buying cars, dont trust your mechanic or even your brother cos if they see beta money, them go forget you sharp sharp. oga, running a vin check only gives you an idea of the vehicle's maintenance history before being sold out and shipped into nigeria, that is only how far you can see with a vin check. you can never know what repair has undergone once it has breathe nigerian dust. why not blame the person who did the inspection for incompetence or greed quote author=promotervickky post=93852375]This is what happens to you when you fail to run a VINCheck.[/quote] |

ahhhhhh! lobatan. you were making sense all the while, but now, you just messed it all up What the hell is a paper doing in the main reciprocating components of an engine. i'm sure the owner of that car is a pokey driver and not a maniac like me, i'll bet that paper you used to park the con rod bearing will give way within one week of my driving. i have zero tolerance when it comes to engine repair and overhaul and at every worse case scenario if i have to make a compromise, it must not be too far from the manufacturer's standard. adanny01: |

Inception: You got my point right this time. Only that you don't think Kazeems can do it without veneer calipers or micrometer screw gauge. If the conrod bearings are the usual weak spots, then I think it's worth a try since an 800k replacement no be beans. But I still won't advise him to drop off the engine for that. With a gear pump, it means the timing chain and pump must be removed first. Engine is rotated to bring No 1 and 4 down and worked on and then later engine rotated to bring down No 2 and 3. That's how its done. The packing is required if the journal is worn given too much clearance to the closest available bearing size. Papers have different thicknesses, so an appropriate one would be chosen and can be folded as required to adjust the thickness. The packing is placed between the conrod and bearing so it works without hindering any oil flow since oil is needed on the moving face of bearing and journal only. Where a bearing has an oil hole, a hole is punched in the paper. Every engine requires lubrication, 1ZZ requires it too. If done too tight, yes, 1getting required lubrication would pose a big threat to the crankshaft recreating the problem. This thing requires experience and with the right Mechanic, it can be done if its only conrod. Only that its stressful working under the car. |

lyort: You will be surprised to know that it works and has been working for decades. How does it work is the question you should be asking if you don't know. For 2 yrs, the paper is still sitting inside the 1zz. The car has never stopped working 1 day or made any crankshaft noise since then. I prefer to put the paper than rebuild the engine. If i rebuilt that engine, something could have gone wrong by now. And the paper is an 'if'. If the paper can make the noise go away and work 100% with a 30k budget, would you prefer to rebuild the engine at say 200k or buy the engine at 800k? Meanwhile that rebuild is the worst option since there is no guarantees. 2 Likes 1 Share |
