The starting point is: what skill do these guys have? If you have no skill you will be earning peanuts!

But if you have real skills, employers will come with thousands of dollars begging you to do their work. I made $50,000 from a Latvian company on Elance in 2013 alone. That company alone paid my rent that year and a jeep I bought.

You have to be on top of the food chain. All this talk about profile building without skills is a waste of time.

I even give 10k, 20k jobs to students because I am too busy now and work with few high paying companies now. There is even a php developer I know based in Lagos who has done more than 700 jobs on freelancer. When u reach that stage jobs will be chasing you, not you chasing $2 per 500 words peanut butter change.

Upworks is a mix of good and bad, but for me as a developer I only have done 4 jobs with the latest one now, but i must admit I never took it serious. I made sure to have a personal website, some projects to show , I usually look to see which technology is in demand and do a reasonable but short project to show competence. In the proposal I just write about the issue they are facing and how I can help them, in this part I am always very detailed because there are tons of proposals sent, so you have to always write like you have to express your point. I am just at the building profile stage. I took a 50usd job, during development he realized it was more complex and raised to 350usd, and also spoke about contracting more jobs. Work ethics too matter. That's my experience so far
