Does this really depend on existing foundation? This is not to argue. Just asking.....
I was one of the best at maths in both secondary schools I attended. I studied accounting and the best scores on my university transcript are maths and maybe stats courses. I took my GRE yesterday and failed woefully. Quants- 147, Verbal- 146 without essay.
I studied for 2 months.

Yeah, I can relate with this, I feel the GRE has some tricks and traps you need to be conversant with in order to get a good score especially in quant. So residual knowledge would not really play well here even though it's important.

Sorry about your scores
Please what can you highlight as the factor that led to your low quant score.
Is the question too hard or you dont have enough time to read or you didn't area the necessary materials
Please this your review will go a long way for the upcoming test taker.
And how was your mock test experience

If someone has around A1 maths, around A1 further-maths, this is what I meant by foundation - and this is an "on average" or "in general" statement. This same reason explains why the modal blasters of this GRE stuff are mainly the engineering guys or science guys in Nigeria. On average, they have stronger elementary math foundation.

Your university accounting math and stats courses were not rigorous enough - no math done at business and econs departments/faculties in Nigeria is rigorous, except actuarial science people, and these guys mostly take real math - sometimes at math departments. You will say I'm generalizing, but I am not.

Your scores fall into the range of an average Nigerian test taker. Our average in Nigeria is around your score....But I think you could bring it up if you work for a sustained period, maybe 4 months to 1 year of hard, intense work, because some things still need to develop somewhere. And, as someone above said, spend time to learn the tricks too.

And for any undergrad reading this thread, if you know you want to go US grad school later, then start prepping for GRE/GMAT from year 1, and even saving some money to take the test many many times, each time practicing hard, until you eventually nail it, hopefully. This is assuming these tests are still required because I am hearing schools are planning to cancel it. Such cancellation will have its own problems because it would likely become harder for international students to get a chance for full scholarships at these schools. GRE has been roughly a way for internationals to outperform americans and get considered.

I pity any student especially from Sub-Saharan Africa who decides to not write the GRE yet hopes to be funded by the institution. These woke people will in the end deprieve minorities of access in the name of dIvERsiTY and iNClUsiOn

yeah, it does. Only prepared for three weeks, less than a week for quant (164) and the remaining time for verbal and AWA (144 and 3.5). Mind you, mathematics is never my problem

Even our own fellow Nigerians too who doesn’t want to write GRE, given one or more reasons not to write as excuses, let’s pity them as well.

Provided they've the funds to sponsor themselves, fine and good. Unfortunately, judging by statistics from the Canadian government where 8 out of 10 Nigerian students are denied visas mainly because they don't have the required funds, I don't see that possible for the US. On a Facebook page for GRE test takers, one Indian advised that they should write the exam regardless of what institutions say about the preference. And like one dude stated on Twitter, this is a covert attempt by certain groups in the US to phase out Asians who normally score higher than even whites. If you notice, one of the arguments against the GRE is that it's discriminatory against "people of colour" (Hispanics, blacks, Asians and non-Whites). However, what they don't state is that Asians are classified as people of colour yet attain high scores in the exam. If it's so, how is the GRE against people of colour?

But hey, our people will blindingly swallow the woke tablet even though they don't have the required funds as they come from the poorest continent unlike Asians who have an average GDP growth of 5%+ (prior to Covid-19) and can fund their studies.

Didn't you submit your scores to four schools already using the GRE free score report immediately after your exam?

Good score - congrats.

Hmmm, about schools. I don't really know engineering. But I would suggest you get into the best place that your profile can take you.

Contact the Naija profs in engineering at Stanford, MIT, Michigan and I forget the other ones. Display your profile and candidly ask them if you have a chance at their schools/programs. I know of a 4.50ish guy who got into either MIT or Harvard. There is a Naija prof in that faculty.

Regardless of what these Naija profs say, in your shoes, I would still try out one or two top programs, 3 or 4 mid ranking programs, and like 5 low ranked programs in your engineering.

This is assuming you have up to 300-500 dollars to sink into these applications, and I am also assuming you have profs who will write top stellar letters for you, and that other parts of your profile are bam, perhaps even bammer than your GPA/GRE.

There is a nairaland boy here who got into Stanford. He is elect elect. You can look into his profile to get more idea.

All the best with your plans.
