He is not to blame but the regulatory bodies.

How many trailer drivers have their driver's licences checked?

We have laws but toothless regulatory bodies.

Don't mind these idiots.

The black box was removed from the crash site by the operators.

This is not the first time that has happened.

The pilot I suspect must have dumped his fuel in anticipation of a crash in an urban area. No pilot will fly with inadequate fuel and if it so happens to be so, would have made an emergency landing in an open area.

Thirdly, the AIB coming out with this statement of the pilot not having a valid liscence is following the earlier NCAA's very unprofessional utterance long before AIB came out with their prelimunary report, that the helicopter in question was not approved for flight operations by them.

Then how come an aircraft that was not approved for operations was being operated within Nigerian airspace by an unqualified Pilot?

These NCAA idiots don't know they are even indicting themselves for failing to do their job.

This is not the first time the useless NCAA has been in the eye of the storm. This same NCAA came out to tell us that the black box for Bellview Airliner that mysteriously crashed somewhere around Ibadan airspace in 2005 was stolen from their office in Lagos.

I have met and interacted with several of these NCAA badged agents and I can tell you 90% of them have no businesss working in aviation talk more of being regulators.

As for AIB, does ones do not have a single clue.

My opinion of the timeline of events is as follows:.

1. Pilot notices a major fault

2. Pilot contacts Ikeja ATC notifying them of an emergency

3. Pilot dumps fuel in anticipation of a forced landing in an urban area

4. Pilot must have lost engine power or rudder control or both

5. Chopper can't be controlled by pilot and goes into a spin (highlighting loss od rudder control)

6. Chopper crashes

7. Onlookers swarm the site

8. Police do nothing to secure the crash site.

9. Airline representatives visit site and ecuavate black box

10. AIB cones in and as clueless as they are come out with their useless conclusion

Those ones don't know what they are talking about.

There is a major cover up going on to absolve the management of the airline and the NCAA of blame and they have chosen to blame the dead pilot.

FYI, rotary pilot training is more extensive and rigourous with higher standard expectations than your normal fixed wing.

Not having a license is not the cause of the crash because it does not mean that he does not know how to operate the plane. Many pilots for Pakistan non get license yet they non de crash plane.
If you read the story, one of the license they are talking about expired in August and was probably not renewed because of the lockdown, not like the guy suddenly forgot how to fly when his license expired. License expiring is an administrative procedure, but the question is why did the chopper crash? How did a chopper with no capacity to discharge fuel mid air end up with no fuel after it was claimed to have refilled.
Just my no-aviation competence thoughts

Not true.

No civilian pilot will carry out a flight without the minimum amount of fuel neither for the operation plus the mandatory reserves.

Everybody was calling the pilot a hero; talking bout how he dumped fuel to prevent an explosion.

The report has shown that the helicopter had no capacity to jettison fuel and that there was no fuel in the tank.. so what could have happened?

Faulty gauge? Higher consumption than calculated? Under-fueling?

This has nothing to do with the validity of the pilots license; why was the tank empty?

This claim should not be the primary concern. Its only to discredit bells as a company.

If my driver licence expires last month and I am driving today, it does not mean I don't know how to drive.

There are other primary cause of the accident which should be investigated and mitigated to prevent similar occurrence.

This does not however justify why a pilot would not possess a valid licence though

And the same NCAA approved the liscence for a civil helicopter without a black box and fuel dump capacity when it operates within heavily populated areas?

Use brain .

As I said earlier, the fact that NCAA came out with an announcement on the aircraft status immediately after the crash when it is only AIB that is vested with any pronouncements should tell you those idiots in. NCAA do not know what they are doing

At any given time NCAA is supposed to know all aircrafts that are operating within our airspace.

You can't even get ATC clearance without NCAA notifying NAMA .

For NCAA to come out with such statement is an admission on their own part that they failed as regulators.

The stupid NCAA is probably hiding it's ass and it's incompetence. The late pilots extension request probably was sitting in someone's office and with Nigeria's usual lackadaisical attitude to work, it's been delayed probably waiting for money to exchange hands before they'll do their jobs. Considering the his license expired barely a month before the accident, and he was in active service till it's expiry, it will be completely immoral and distasteful for NCAA or AIB to try to smear the late captain's image or question his competence. The legality of flying without a license might be a case for the fleet's insurer, but not NCAA or AIB.

Bell will be or already sent their engineers down to Nigeria to conduct their own investigation.

They also will have records of the said aircraft at the point of sale to the Nigerian company operating this aircraft which will show all the equipment on board.

AIB claims that particular heli does not have the features to jettison fuel. That means it was not possible for the pilot to dump fuel in anticipation of a crash landing.

Re: Crashed Bell Helicopter Pilot Had No Valid License - AIB by Reference(m): 8:43am On Sep 22, 2020
Said it. It simply ran out of fuel in flight. There is no way an aircraft flying for more than five minutes will crash, break apart badly and not go up in flames. Fuel fires in all of aerospace operations is a given except where incidents happen over water. Jet A1 is highly volatile and these turbine engines run very, very hot.

There must either have been a miscalculation or misapplication of fuel loads at origin and perhaps faulty instruments. However the pilot should have put his aircraft down at first sign of engine starvation. After all it is a chopper and doesn't require much space to land safely. Why pilots desperately try to make port against all odds often baffles me. Just put the damn thing down.

AIB needs to be granted full investigative powers .

Their investigators should be badged and have powers over l
LEAs within a crash site and also have powers to issue warrants for documents and witnesses.

As things stand now, they are lame duck civil servants with miinmum oversea training and zero powers.

Normally , no one should issue statements on a crash incident or investigation but only them.

The case of NCAA coming out to spew trash a few hours after the crash is totally wrong and unprofessional .

For some reason the NCAA still thinks they are in the defunct FCAA where they were both regulators and investigators .
